Rockies @ Nationals postponed due to forecast stormy weather. RADAR shows not much right now, but the Nationals wear a belt, suspenders, and crazy glue juuuuuuust in case.

Make-up game will be Wednesday afternoon as part of a split double-header.

Dave Preston @davpresto
Nats 1B Ryan Zimmerman goes on the 10 day Injured List with Plantar Fasciitis. Second stint on the shelf for the veteran this year.

Zim was running out a single last night when he grimaced. The trainer walked him off the field. News today is that he ruptured the fascia which was deemed "good" since it eliminates the inflammation that was causing him such problems, but IANAD opinion that might be the last time we see him play on a Major League diamond.

Holy ####. Chase, I never met a homer given up I didn't like, got Joey Votto to pop up for an out

Hiura out with a quad? WTF?!

Twins turn a triple play in the top of the 1st.

############# ####### ####### bullshit.

When a team turns a triple play on you in the first inning, it's probably not going to be your night.

Remember when CC had mastered the art of *soft* contact?

Yeah ...

Was out to eat with the family and saw the triple play unfold in front of me on one of about a billion large screen TVs. Fun watch it unfold, but I am not a Yankee fan
   11. rconn23 Posted: July 22, 2019 at 09:16 PM (#5864041)
Yankees are just a mess this game. Twins are finally tired of being owned by them it seems and are looking to make a statement. Since at this rate the Yankees pitching is so bad that CC would be in line to be Game 1 starter, they'll probably beat them in the playoffs, too.
   12. Master of the Horse Posted: July 22, 2019 at 09:31 PM (#5864042)
Max Kepler, dinger machine. I know that Max is an old timey name but does Kepler have a chance to set a home run record for a season for guys named Max? Figure if any crowd would know the answer to this completely absurd question this is the place

Astros are wearing caps with the Apollo 11 mission patch tonight, and at the end of three innings they have reached 11 runs.

Red Sox up 8-0 over Rays, looking to make up some ground!

Eric Thames in the outfield?!

Astros are wearing caps with the Apollo 11 mission patch tonight, and at the end of three innings they have reached 11 runs.

The A's, meanwhile, are trying to lull the 'Stros into complacency, by scoring no runs, and also hitting no hits, nor walking any walks.
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE GREATEST COMEBACK EVER
   17. Master of the Horse Posted: July 22, 2019 at 09:39 PM (#5864047)
I guess Max Muncy with 35 homers?
   18. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: July 22, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5864049)
Bob Melvin, who knows more about managing baseball teams than I do, starts bringing in the A's subs in the 4th: Nick Martini is back! And Franklin Barretto is... at shortstop! And Robbie Grossman is in... right field? OK, Athletics, get this one over with, go pound some Budweiser, and come back strong tomorrow.
   19. Howie Menckel Posted: July 22, 2019 at 10:26 PM (#5864053)
lots of Maxes, with Pirates OF Max Carey the lone HOFer.
but mostly speed guys like him, or pitchers, or scrubs.

rough list:
Muncy 35
Muncy 26
Kepler 24
Alvis 22
Alvis 21
Alvis 21
Kepler 20
Kepler 19
Alvis 18
Kepler 17
Alvis 11
Bishop 10
CAREY 10

it's the Golden Age of Maxes - we are Maxing Out! move over, 1960s Indians 3B Max Alvis

Max Carey made the hall of fame, but never hit more than 10 home runs. On that note, Max Carey is really underrated on the "worst of the Hall of Fame" lists. He did have 10 SB titles, but his career high in WAR was 5.1. He was pretty much just a solid player who played a long time.
   21. phredbird Posted: July 22, 2019 at 10:43 PM (#5864057)

OOOOOF!

GOLDY WIT DA GRAND SLAMMA IN THE 10TH, CARDS UP 6-2 IN PITTSBURGH.
   22. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: July 22, 2019 at 10:53 PM (#5864058)
Cain is something else. Yelich wisely yield the right of way on that one.
   23. phredbird Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:03 PM (#5864059)

good lord ... pirates score a quick run, the next batter gets on, in comes carlos martinez.

first pitch is hit out of the park. 6-5 cards.

next batter gets a hit on the first pitch.

jeez.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:08 PM (#5864061)
this season has been ridiculous
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:11 PM (#5864063)
seriously a play at the plate to not tie the game..... how do you score 4 runs in the top of the 10th inning, and then go out of your way to blow it in the bottom of the 10th?
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:14 PM (#5864064)
dumbass win... I'll take it but c'mon this was a ridiculous win
   27. phredbird Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:14 PM (#5864065)

oh mama. this game is killing me.

man on second, pirates get a hot smash hit to right, martinez comes up throwing, and the runner is out by a whisker.

frankly, i thought he looked safe.

next batter flies out, CARDS WIN!1!1!!

GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK!
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:16 PM (#5864066)
I think this is the fifth consecutive day that Martinez has been used and he's looked like used pasta two days ago. (okay it's his sixth appearance in the past 8 days)
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:17 PM (#5864067)
For all the faults of Matheny, he didn't ride his horses in the pen until their arms fell off.... can't say the same for Shildt. (arguably the worst bullpen manager in the past 30 years for the Cardinals, and that includes Whitey and Torre, who both sucked at bullpen management)
   30. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:18 PM (#5864068)
Saladino w another GRAND SLAM. Brenneman disgusted.
   31. phredbird Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:20 PM (#5864069)

i agree, martinez did not look good at all ...

this could turn out to be a pyrrhic victory because we got what 3 more games to play here ...
   32. rconn23 Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:21 PM (#5864070)
Gary Sanchez is utterly helpless at the plate. An automatic out at this point.
   33. Howie Menckel Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:25 PM (#5864071)
Sanchez 9 for his last 71 (.126) with 1 HR does seem suboptimal
   34. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: July 22, 2019 at 11:29 PM (#5864072)

Agree with this - what I think put him over was (1) remaining effective as very much the same player for 5-6 years after the lively ball came in, and (2) halo effect from his Aging Veteran Clutch 7-Game World Series Victory in 1925 with the Pirates.

Pedro Strop is juuuuuuuust a bit rusty looking.
   36. phredbird Posted: July 23, 2019 at 12:27 AM (#5864080)

giants with a big inning to take a lead into the ninth, started by a leadoff double from the panda.

it's crazy when the giants are winning at home, that stadium rocks.
   37. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 23, 2019 at 12:32 AM (#5864081)
Quite the gut punch defeat.
   38. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 23, 2019 at 12:36 AM (#5864083)
Whoops, thought Almora made the third out for some reason.
   39. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 23, 2019 at 12:37 AM (#5864084)
Well that was anti-climatic!

Shitty loss that’s entirely on ol’ Pedro.
   40. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 23, 2019 at 12:44 AM (#5864085)
Shitty loss that’s entirely on ol’ Pedro.
Well, he was facing the "heart" of the Giants' order, such as it is. That's a situation where you should use your best reliever in the 8th rather than in the 9th...provided your best reliever doesn't refuse to pitch in any inning except the 9th. So Kimbrel deserves some of the blame to the extent that he should have been out there instead of Strop, and also Maddon for following the script rather than the situation.
