   1. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 18, 2017 at 05:00 PM (#5516416)
Well, there's the Cubs bullpen we all know and love.

It's been remarkably bad this month.

That helped.

Fortunately, Javy is there to pull their asses out of the fire.
   5. Brian C Posted: August 18, 2017 at 05:23 PM (#5516442)
That play by Javy was incredible. That might be the best I've seen him do.

Tigers have lost 10 of 12, given up 87 runs (despite a shutout in one of the wins). Watch them beat the Dodgers 2 of 3. My two favorite teams this weekend, going in opposite directions.

Yanks @Red Sucks @Fenway... always special.

Go Bombers !

LOL, past the Coca Cola sign! That's a start !

Not a good start at all !

I can't wrap my mind around the idea of Zimmerman beating the Dodgers.

Number two hitter for both teams, homered in the first inning....

according to news reports, tommy pham's home run from last night has finally re-entered the atmosphere

Cardinals continuing to score runs, 5-1 for the Cardinals in the top of the 2nd. Cardinals currently leading the majors for most runs in the month of August with 105 now(Cincy came into today tied with the Cardinals at 100 for August, but with one more game played than the Cardinals)
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 07:43 PM (#5516541)
Carlos Martinez is homerun prone tonight, Freese with a solo shot to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the 2nd.
   16. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 18, 2017 at 07:44 PM (#5516542)
Zimmerman immediately coughs up the lead. 4-2 Dodgers.

Dejong with the Cardinals third homerun of the game, and his team leading 19th of the season, this rookie can play, any other year he might be a legit candidate for rookie of the year, but Bellinger owns this one.
   19. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 18, 2017 at 07:55 PM (#5516550)
Pujols hits #609, a 2-run shot that ties him with Sammy Sosa for 8th all-time.

2-0 Angels in the top of the first inning.
   20. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 18, 2017 at 07:56 PM (#5516552)
And Calhoun follows with a homer. 3-0 Angels. Hellickson off to an exciting start for the O's.

Andrew Heaney's first inning of the season is a 1-2-3 effort. If Heaney can give the Angels some quality starts in place of Jesse Chavez's innings, that would be a huge boost for their WC2 run.
   23. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:09 PM (#5516558)
And C.J. Cron hits the Angels' third homer of the ballgame. Hellickson's faced seven batters, and three of them have homered.

Pujols hits #609, a 2-run shot that ties him with Sammy Sosa for 8th all-time.

The question: can he pass Thome (612) before he's done for good?

   25. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:10 PM (#5516560)
Looking at the NL position player rookies, and Manny Pina is having a good year for a 30 year old rookie 103 ops+ while playing excellent defense as a catcher... not really sure he's a rookie though, but bb-ref has him as one.

Josh Bell has had a solid season, playing pretty much every day and putting up a 114 ops+, but for a first baseman it's not really that impressive, his third place total in war is about his playing time more than it is about his quality.

Other NL candidates is Manuel Margot(centerfielder for the Padres) and Ian Happ(center fielder etc for the Cubs) and Johan Carmago(third baseman plus for the Braves) Among pitchers, by bWar three Rockie pitchers head the list (Kyle Freeland, German Marquez, and Antonio Senzatella) followed by a few other pitchers, but nobody really impressive, Josh Hader has a 625 era+ but only 25 innings pitched...

If I'm voting it goes Bellinger, Freeland and Marquez(Dejong would get my third vote for position players--assuming Pina is eligible, he gets my second vote for position players, but all three of the Rockie's pitchers are more impressive so far this season)
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:13 PM (#5516561)
Al Hrabosky just said that in 20 years, the sport of football will be in question(because of concussions) and how many of those athletes are going to come to baseball.
   27. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:14 PM (#5516562)
And Caleb Cowart hits the Angels' fourth homer of the ballgame. Hellickson's faced nine batters, and four of them have homered.
   28. Bote Man Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:17 PM (#5516563)
Zimmerman immediately coughs up the lead. 4-2 Dodgers.

May I assume that y'all are referring to Jordan Zimmermann, with 2 NNs? That's the only way we could tell him apart from Ryan when they were both on the Nationals.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:17 PM (#5516564)
First and third no outs, pitcher up to bat, in a 6-2 game, and the Cardinals successfully pull of the sac bunt/squeeze to score Grichuk.

To the naked eye, it looked like Grichuk was out, but the ump called him safe, going to review.

Edit: call is upheld, on replay it does look like he was probably safe, but that was a hard call to make, the Pirates did nothing wrong on the play, just a tad behind on the tag with the slide to the outside of the plate.

Yep, you're right. I was always making that same mistake when they were both in Washington, and it was very confusing.

Jorge Castillo @jorgeccastillo
Max Scherzer has been scratched. Matt Grace will start.

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
Max Scherzer scratched with same neck issue as before but now on other side. Matt Grace will start tonight.

Dan Kolko @masnKolko
Nats will get some tests on Scherzer, try and figure out why this issue keeps appearing. Hopeful he won't be out long, but want him healthy.

Anybody know where I can get that do-it-yourself seppuku kit???
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:28 PM (#5516570)
Dejong might probably end the season with the second most homeruns for a Cardinal rookie (Albert had 37, Duncan had 22 for second all time)
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:36 PM (#5516571)
Ryan Howard is still playing baseball, not major league of course, but is in the minors.

The Orioles with two solo homers in the last two innings, and it's 5-2. That's six homers between the two teams tonight so far, and it's only the bottom of the 3rd.
   37. Tim D Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:37 PM (#5516574)
Dick Enberg and Kirk Gibson doing the TV for the Tigers tonight. Kind of cool.

Yet another homer for the Orioles, Machado with a 2-run homer. 5-4 Angels so far, 7 homers in the game between both teams.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:43 PM (#5516580)
I do have to say, I'm loving the Cardinals announcers "love letter" to Roberto Clemente. Basically they have spent the entire inning talking about Clemente.... Every Pirates series should have at least half an inning by the visiting announcers doing exactly that...talking about the greatness of Clemente (on and off the field)
   42. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:46 PM (#5516581)
Jesus Angel Christ ... evil Angels hitting batters in the eye. What an Anniversary. Yuck !

HOPE THE ANGELS LOSE ... 4 EVERMORE !
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:50 PM (#5516583)
Molina is not having a good month when it comes to foul balls, this bunt deflected right off of his throwing fingers.

Sometimes you forget that Aaron Judge is basically just a 250 Pound Baby in pinstripes.

   45. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:54 PM (#5516586)
I get the love for Clemente, but Dan McLaughlin is incorrectly crediting Clemente as being only one of two players who have had their hof eligibility 5 year wait waived, which is not true, he's only the second person who has received the waiver to go into the hof... Munson also received that waiver, but he didn't make it in, (Kile also, among probably a few others that I'm not remembering)
   46. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:57 PM (#5516587)
May the Ghost of Roberto Clemente make the American League East really interesting, by a Yankee sweep of the Boston Red Sucks !
Thank you, Roberto Ghost !

Damn you, Roberto !
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 08:59 PM (#5516590)
Today is Clemente's birthday, so that is why he's getting so much love on the Cardinals broadcast.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:03 PM (#5516592)
Not sure I'm repeating this stat correctly, but this is only the second time in history that the combined teams have hit a homerun in the first five half innings (meaning top 1st, bottom 1st, top 2nd, bottom 2nd, top of 3rd.)
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:09 PM (#5516594)
Yep, I am one of those dorks that like baseball announcer statistics..... just random crap that doesn't really mean much... Cardinals have scored 10 or more runs 12 times this season, 5 times in August(this is the Cardinals 17th game in August)

Virtually every Jordan Zimmermann start makes me think about how I thought the Tigers were getting such a steal when they signed him.
   56. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:21 PM (#5516603)
Given how this game was going, it was inevitable that Mike Trout would homer. The eighth homer of the game makes it 7-4 Angels.

No hits yet, but Judge has still looked better tonight than he has in a long time. No K's and very few swings and misses.
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:34 PM (#5516611)
11-3 Cardinals, but the pen is coming in, and expected to get 6 outs...not sure that the lead is safe.
   60. Tim D Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:38 PM (#5516613)
Did Pomeranz look hurt bad or was it more "precautionary?"
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:39 PM (#5516614)
11-5, and the Cardinals still need to get 6 outs....for some reason the Cardinals recalled Mike Mayers instead of Mark Montgomery.... and the results were typical Mayers results.

Edit: Mayers major league results coming into todays game, 9 1/3 ip, 17.36 era, 10.11 fip, 2.786 whip.... So far he's allowed two runs and has yet to record an out. (single, homerun, 10 pitch walk)
   62. phredbird Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5516616)
here we go ... relievers can't get anybody out in the late innings ... do we have to score double digits for the rest of the season?
   63. Tim D Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:41 PM (#5516617)
Matt Boyd on in relief, Anibal went to the DL today. Tigers must have some new horrific starters to unveil. Norris coming back too I guess.

   66. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:44 PM (#5516620)
I'm going to push for Mark Montgomery to make it to the majors, the guy is a free agent minor leaguer, and is exactly the guy you call up for the pen to see if he has found something..... If we don't call him up this year, he's just going to be a free agent again and sign with an even more pitiful team (bullpen wise) and he could be the pitcher equivalent of Pham next year.
   67. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:44 PM (#5516621)
435' of Sanchez ties it.

Add a double to Mayers performance today, 11-6 Cardinals now.
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:46 PM (#5516624)
Mike Mayers career era just went over 20(20.4841 roughly)

edit: crap... I screwed up that math.... it should have been divided by 9.333 not 9.666 so it is actually 21.215....after recording that out, it dropped to 20.4841....

That's Sanchez's 23rd HR this season (he missed almost a month to injury), and his 43rd in 141 games since being called up last season. I figure something around 145 games a season is the optimum workload for a catcher like Sanchez who hits well enough to get "half days off" at DH. We're looking at a guy who can put up 45-HR seasons if he stays healthy.
   86. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 09:59 PM (#5516644)
Cardinals studio saying "bullpen struggling."....umm no, it's not the bullpen, it's one guy, a guy who has never shown the ability to get major leaguers out, who shouldn't have been called up, and should probably be released just like Mitch Harris(except Harris once in a while didn't pour gasoline on the opponents flaming bats)

I do feel sorry for Bowman, he could have been a decent number three pitcher, but he was picked up on the rule five, and the team used him as a reliever and he did so well that he earned a job on the major league roster this season, when he should have been sent down to AAA to develop as a starter.

He might become a closer and that will be a good paycheck, but in reality he's probably going to be the number three reliever, not the number one setup man, but the guy just behind that guy.
   89. cardsfanboy Posted: August 18, 2017 at 10:09 PM (#5516648)
2 outs to go, 3 runs ahead, this is a very tight game, the Pirates have a slight advantage here, but I can hope for the Cardinal victory.

according to a Gleeman tweet, Byron Buxton has an inside the park homerun, a stand up triple, and a stand up double so far today. It's the 6th inning...just needs a single(Gleeman says a bunt single would be appropriate)
