Hip hip hooray! Two games in Boston today! Also, Allen Webster's major league debut in game 2.

It's going to feel a little weird having a third baseman who can throw overhand. I suspect it will be somewhat refreshing.
   3. Publius Publicola Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:14 PM (#4421125)
Yeah, I'm relieved that they finally did what they needed to do and DL Zimmerman. His arm was threatening to sink an otherwise promising season in the same way that Hobson's arm sunk Boston in '78.
   4. Publius Publicola Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:14 PM (#4421126)
Joey, I take it you live in the DC area? Where?
   5. Publius Publicola Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:15 PM (#4421127)
Am excited to get a first peek at Rendon today too.
   6. Esoteric Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:20 PM (#4421131)
Wow, it had barely registered with me that Rendon was coming up to play so fast. This is going to be exciting.

Not like you asked, Publius, but I'm also a DC'er. Live in Potomac, MD. Born and raised there, as well -- one of the rare natives of this region, as opposed to the transplants.

Shin Soo Choo hit again. That's 8 HBP in 19 games.

Gee escapes.

This is going to be a long afternoon.

VOTTOMATIC! Joey hits his 3rd Hr and puts the Reds up 1-0 (Choo was cut down on a double play ball)

Yeah, 26 pitches in the first. I'm glad I'm going to miss Latroy Hawkins blow the game later.

Come on, David, let's get this one in.

   23. Lassus Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:36 PM (#4421158)
That was one big garbage heap of an inning, middle of the order.
   24. AJMcCringleberry Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:36 PM (#4421159)
Well, that sucked.
   25. Joey B. is being stalked by a (Gonfa) loon Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:36 PM (#4421160)
Feels like the first time all year that an error didn't lead to unearned runs.

   27. Esoteric Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:40 PM (#4421163)
Bit of anti-climactic 1st AB for Rendon. He definitely got his pitch -- down the heart of the plate -- but didn't make anything out of it.
   28. Esoteric Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:41 PM (#4421164)
What's Gee's velocity like?
Sitting in the high 80s. 87-89, thereabouts. Curveball in the mid-70s.
   29. AJMcCringleberry Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:41 PM (#4421165)
88-89.

High 80's from the few I've paid attention to. 89, 87....

Jesus Christ John Buck has some incredible power. Where did this come from?

   32. Lassus Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:45 PM (#4421169)
Buck is seriously awesome.

Where did this come from?

Toronto.
   33. Russlan is fond of Dillon Gee Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:46 PM (#4421170)
Gee's velocity has been down this year, 87 mph average from 90. He's not a guy that can afford to lose that much stuff.
   34. AJMcCringleberry Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:46 PM (#4421171)
That was crushed.
   35. Esoteric Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:47 PM (#4421173)
Am I misremembering or was Buck basically the "Major League player" afterthought throw-in that the Mets got from Toronto in the R.A. Dickey trade? The least-remarked upon aspect of that deal?

Hell of a bargain, that.

EDIT: Thanks, Lassus. Again: am I incorrect in remembering that Buck was the "yeah, whatever, a warm ML body" guy in that deal?
   36. AJMcCringleberry Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:48 PM (#4421174)

Buck was thrown in because the Blue Jays wanted Thole and the Mets then needed someone to catch at the major league level who wasn't Mike Nickeas.

Buck has always had power. He almost slugged .500 in 2010 as a Blue Jay in 2010. He's just having the best month of his life but he has hit 15+ homers 3 times in his career.
   42. Gamingboy Posted: April 21, 2013 at 01:52 PM (#4421181)
What happened to Billingsley? Too lazy to look up right this moment.

He was a Red Sox prospect at some point. I think he might have been part of the Tim Federowicz three-way trade with the Mariners.

I justify my ignorance of his power by the fact that he spent most of his career to date with Kansas City and Miami, with a stop in Toronto.

That said, guy's slugging out of his mind right now. Have to figure he'll wear down as the season progresses, especially if he catches regularly, but still...yet another reason the Mets are off to a surprisingly not-dire start to the season.

Thole isn't even on the Blue Jays roster right now. He's in the minors, doing well.

Having seen J.P. Arencibia "catching" R.A. Dickey's knuckler, I have to think that Thole would be an improvement. The Jays should never have "broken up the band."

If the Mets can turn Buck into a decent prospect at the deadline, that'd be a pretty nice deal for them. He's doing his part.

Have you guys seen what Rafael Montero is doing in AA? He's got a 27/1 k/bb ratio in 22.2 IP. That's good.

Sixth batter up in the 1st, and the only out he's recorded was a gift checked-swing strike three on a full count on Manny Machado.

...
Anyway, Cal Ripken said a few minutes ago that Jerry Hairston is one of the few players still active who he was a teammate of. Now I want to know who else is. So I did a bit of a check, and as far as I can tell, the only former Ripken teammates still active in the Majors are Hairston and Brian Roberts. Willis Otanez, Geronimo Gil and Karim Garcia are all active in Mexico.

Pretty weak, but I think Darling needs to hold a decent amount of the blame for this. He's not exactly a nobody announcer any more, he could have afforded to take a hit from TBS by calling out of that game.

Yeah, and it's not like they'd be without a color guy. Cal Ripken basically always does TBS color when they are in Baltimore.

Paul Konerko and Henry Blanco played with Eddie Murray. So did Karim Garcia.

   87. bobm Posted: April 21, 2013 at 02:41 PM (#4421262)
[76] From Wikipedia:

He is likely best remembered for two incidents in the 2003 American League Championship Series at Fenway Park against the rival Boston Red Sox. Following a Hideki Matsui double that gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead in game three, García was plunked with a Pedro Martinez pitch thrown behind his head.[4] A verbal altercation with Martinez caused benches to empty, and interrupted play. Shortly afterwards, Martinez famously told Peter Gammons during an interview on ESPN:[5]

"Karim García, who's Karim García? I have no respect for that guy. I don't have anything to prove to that guy. He needs to be forcing himself to come up to where I am, to my level. When you talk about Jeter, Bernie Williams, Paul O'Neill, guys like that that you really tip your hat, that you can understand. But guys like Karim García, what? So what? Who are you? Who are you Karim García to try to test Pedro Martinez, a proven player for ten years? That's what I don't understand. Why would I hit Karim García?”

Later in the same game, García jumped into the bullpen to assist Yankees teammate Jeff Nelson in a fight with a groundskeeper. Martinez later referenced his famous quote during the Fenway Park centennial ceremonies, speaking on the microphone to fans before a game against the Yankees in 2012. [...]

In 2004, García moved crosstown to the New York Mets. His brief tenure with the Mets included him and teammate Shane Spencer becoming involved in a parking lot encounter with a pizza deliveryman, but no charges were filed.[6] In July, the Mets sent him to the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Mike DeJean. The Orioles released him in August with a .212 batting average.

This is a great start for Dillon Gee. I was worried that he might get demoted with another poor start but if he can get back some velocity as he gets healthier, I think he can be a solid guy for them.
