For the record, today's Birthday Team features Brooks Robinson, Reggie and Jim Sundberg with Babe Adams and Dennis Leonard in the rotation.

Does anyone have any idea when the last regularly scheduled** single admission doubleheader was in Yankee Stadium? I'd be surprised if it wasn't at least 20 or more years ago.

**meaning not a makeup like today's

It's time to play: How Many Runs Will the Braves Score Today?

The following is a multiple choice quiz. Please select one of the following options to indicate how many runs you think the Braves will score today:

A) zero runs
B) one run

Thank you for playing our game: How Many Runs Will the Braves Score Today?

Paul O'Neill, after Derek Jeter had trouble with a grounder: "Defensive shifts cause as many hits as they save."

O'Neill now just said something along the lines of...shifts might get you outs, but they're not saving you runs. WTF?

Thank you so much, Gerald Laird.

I was saying on Twitter yesterday that these games against the Cardinals resemble nothing so much as a typical playoff game for the Braves: cascades of misfortune, bad calls and bizarre errors. And now the Braves surrender three runs after Laird drops an inning-ending strikeout and allows Bourjos to reach first base.

October in May!

Ugh. ####### AA baserunning, kid.

I think I hate Dan Uggla.

Albert Pujols! First homer in nearly two weeks!

I've never heard of Kevin Kiermaier, but he just made the catch of the weekend against the Angels.

Rangers are not just scuffling right now, they are a mess.
5-14 lately, and leading the league in DL placements.
Today is Prince Fielder Bobblehead Day at the park, but I'm not even sure he is present? He is not on the DL, but he has been unavailable this series due to sore neck.
Texas bench today is two guys: Roughned Odor and JP Arencibia
   18. Baldrick Posted: May 18, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4709188)
Brad Miller has a lot of talent, but good lord he has not be impressive this year. Tons of stupid errors. Baserunning blunders. Looks lost at the plate. I had high hopes for him this year, but he's hitting like Rey Ordonez, throwing the ball like Steve Blass, and running the bases like Jim Thome.
   19. Joey B.: posting for the kids of northeast Ohio Posted: May 18, 2014 at 04:24 PM (#4709190)
Nice win, but not sweeping this crapbag team somehow feels like a disappointment.
   20. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 18, 2014 at 04:26 PM (#4709192)
Jordan Schafer loses a routine two-out flyball in the sun, and Uggla double clutches the relay throw, allowing Yadier to score from first.

October in May.

14-- if you hated Uggla before he brainfarted to let Molina score on that error, I can't imagine how you feel now
   22. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: May 18, 2014 at 04:58 PM (#4709209)
Hanley's fielding has completely fallen apart this season- already -8 rfield and another big error right there.
   23. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 18, 2014 at 05:08 PM (#4709214)
Trout and Pujols are leaving a crap ton of guys on base lately, but the other guys are hitting and pitching well. 5-0 after 4 innings.

Hell of a bunt from Megan's Law.

What more is going to take to get you off the fence?

BTW the Braves traded for a 26 yo AAA infielder today. Next step calling up La Stella?
   26. Snowboy Posted: May 18, 2014 at 05:24 PM (#4709220)
Maybe the official scorer in Texas just has a high expectation of fielders?
In a high profile moment earlier this week, he gave an error to Alex Rios on a pop that dropped between him and the second baseman, which officially kept alive a Darvish no-hit bid. (The error was revised by the Commissioner's Office later in the week, scored a hit.)
Today the scorer declined to give a hit to Leonys Martin on a perfect bunt that got by the pitcher, and skipped over Brett Lawrie's glove at 2B. He scored it an error. Lawrie played it as well as he could have, but it was going to take a one-handed catch'n'shovel to get the speedy Martin, and the ball just took a bigger hop when it bounced on the dirt instead of the grass. This call also needs to be revised.

Cubs and Brewers wearing 1930s throwback uniforms today. The Cubs should adopt these as their regular uniforms.
   28. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 18, 2014 at 05:39 PM (#4709224)
88 pitches for Shoemaker. Time to pull him.

EDIT: And they do. Great outing, dude! Funny how a guy who can't get out of his own way in AAA has given the Angels two strong starts in the bigs.
   29. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 18, 2014 at 05:47 PM (#4709226)
And of course, the bullpen comes in, and suddenly it's 5-2.

The cab driver I got a ride from today in NYC said that he gave Brendan Ryan up to the Yankees game. Gossip:

1. The cabbie is a Yankees fan but didn't recognize Ryan. When Ryan asked for a ride to the stadium, the cabbie asked if he was going to the game. He replied, "Well, I'm a player." The cabbie asked which player. "I'm Derek Jeter's backup." The cabbie wasn't sure whether to believe him, in part because it was 11:30am and the first game of the doubleheader was at 1pm, and also because during later conversation the cabbie asked a question about "the young starter" who pitched for the Yankees a few games ago and Ryan didn't know the starter's name. But the cabbie was convinced after he dropped Ryan off at the players' entrance and Ryan was greeted by stadium personnel.

2. Ryan mentioned that he doesn't know what the plan for him is next year.

3. The cabbie couldn't figure out why Ryan was getting up to the stadium so late but speculated that maybe Ryan was allowed to get up there late because he wasn't starting until the second game (which turns out to be true, but I'd still think Ryan would be due at the stadium earlier unless he had a specific excuse).

Pujols with his second homer of the game, three hits today. Slump busted.

Pujols with his second homer of the game. Slump busted.

Mompt. Good news, since he's on my DMB team and I just traded Chris Davis for Chris Sale (*), leaving me with Pujols as my starting 1B for the 2014 replay. (My team is DOA this year.)

(*) Although I didn't realize when I made the trade -- shows why I'm a bad GM; I don't do even the basic due diligence -- that Sale is currently dealing with an arm injury of sorts. Hopefully it won't bother him going forward.

NY Daily News - Alex Rodriguez was set to quit baseball until former drug mole and ex-convict Desiree Perez convinced the Yankees slugger to fight MLB over PED suspension

Sure he was. He was going to give back $115 million for... no known reason.

Ethier walked against a LOOGY! Usually he swings wildly at pitches a foot outside when they're thrown by a LOOGY.

Angels finish off Tampa Bay, now 5 games over .500, 8 of their last 10. They've been winning with great starting pitching and hitting up and down the line-up. I take it to be a good sign that they've been winning even without Trout or Pujols playing great. With Calhoun slated to come back soon and Hamilton not long after, it's optimism time.

IT'S HAPPENING!!!!!

I think the double-clutch allowing Molina to score pushed me off.

On the other hand...VICTORY! Sweet, lucky victory!

   42. Ray (RDP) Posted: May 18, 2014 at 11:42 PM (#4709323)
So John Kruk has found the key to why the Red Sox have a losing record this year: when he went into the clubhouse last year for his meeting with John Farrell, there were a lot of players in there, hanging around, talking baseball; but when he went into the clubhouse today for his meeting with John Farrell, there were no players in there, and when he came out of his meeting with John Farrell, there were no players in there.

Seriously, there has to be a better broadcasting idea than to put these clowns on air during a game. (Actually, I've employed a solution: I watch with the sound off, or watch something else.)
   43. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: May 18, 2014 at 11:49 PM (#4709324)
My solution is to watch MLB.tv with my little Roku box in the living room. In the middle of last season they finally added the ability to select the radio play-by-play broadcast which I do automatically, except for Dodgers games (Vin Scully). I puzzle over tweets and posts here in OMNICHATTER about idiotic stuff heard and then have to remind myself that some poor suckers are still listening to the TV commentary.

Even if you can't do it this particular way, ve have vays of making ze baseball experience besser.
   44. Ray (RDP) Posted: May 19, 2014 at 01:00 AM (#4709339)
#43, is the radio audio sync'd with the picture?
   45. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: May 19, 2014 at 01:29 AM (#4709345)
Yes, it is, better than I used to do it with my computer and a bunch of utilities to make it all work. Life is good.
