OMNICHATTER for April 17, 2013

Among the pitchers taking the mound today are Sabathia, Masterson, King Felix, Scherzer, Matt Moore and Kershaw. Two of those names I would not have expected to mention in the same breath as the others when the season started.

Chatter up!

CC Sabathia, in his 4th start, still sitting at 89-90 with his fastball. There has to be some kind of injury he's hiding, right? Guys don't just lose 2-3 MPH off their fastball year to year without an underlying cause.

Game signs - a fingernail enhancement which is what I think Salty is using.

I think Varitek used to use WhiteOut to paint his nails white, at least a few times. I know he usually did the tape thing, but I have a vague memory of him doing the nail thing a few times.

This is the 60th anniversary of Mickey Mantle's 565 foot HR. With inflation, that would be even longer today.

Nice throw by Victorino.

I'm guessing Nats fans aren't missing John Lannan all that much anymore.

Adam Jones lets a bloop single get past him, losing a chance to keep the 2nd runner from scoring, and giving Loney second base.

Was that the year they had Reitsma and Kolb?
Reitsma, yeah. He was the closer to start the year and was awful. They also tried Jorge Sosa there after he bombed in the rotation, and he was just as unsuccessful there.

Red Sox may come to regret squanders. 2nd inning: bases loaded, no outs, no runs. 4th inning: bases loaded, one out, no runs.

Evanescence is from Little Rock, so that's my guess. Also Living Sacrifice.

Mike Carp got his first start of the year tonight against Justin Masterson. He's 3-3 with 3 doubles.

EDIT: And by 3 doubles, I mean 2 doubles and a triple.

Bryce Harper has a bad case of the flu (Denard Span got it at the same time and is still out). His batting line: Three for three with a double and one run scored. Currently hitting .358.

I always thought he looked like the guy who tells you it's gonna cost $2500 to align your differential. Also, Carlos Beltran with a double to break up the no-hitter.

He's gonna build on that Age 22 season any day now, I just know it!

Edit: OTOH, he's currently producing a career best LD%

Alfredo Aceves, a long man who is only starting because of John Lackey's injury, was allowed to start the 6th inning at 90+ pitches. It took a hit, a HR, another HR, and a double before he finally got pulled. It's now 5-3 Boston with a runner on 2nd and no outs for Cleveland.

So after trailing all game and having 2 hits through 6 inning, the Yankees managed to score 3 in the 7th via a bunch of backups stringing together hits and walks, and then Travis Hafner PH homerun in the 8th, Mariano comes in , game over.

ouch.

For the record: Clint Hurdle brought his closer in, with two outs in the top of the ninth, winning 5-0, to face Ty Wigginton.

   166. Mike Webber Posted: April 17, 2013 at 10:14 PM (#4417497)
based on the way they pitched tonight, I think Aceves and Tawaza should be the 5th starter for the Red Sox. Whatever inning Aceves hits the third time through the order he leaves, and Tawza gets at least one time through the order. Hopefully that gets you seven innings. If Tawaza is "unavailable" for two days before the start, you still have about 6 other relievers you can use.
   167. villageidiom Posted: April 17, 2013 at 10:15 PM (#4417498)
And I love Uehara's enthusiasm.
   168. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: April 17, 2013 at 10:16 PM (#4417499)
Is Ty Wigginton actually going to be on the Hall of Fame ballot? He just keeps hanging around.
He's in his 12th season ... he has more G, PA, AB, H, etc. than Phil Nevin, who was on the ballot last year.

Can't wait for him to start a Jim Deshaies-style campaign.
   169. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 17, 2013 at 10:16 PM (#4417500)

I've noticed this too. I've said as much before in other chatters, but the Red Sox made some moves with a nod towards "chemistry" this offseason and I wonder if Uehara was specifically targeted.

I think that if you ask Red Sox fans here they'll tell you that the biggest "chemistry" move they made this off-season was telling Bobby Valentine not to let the door smack him in the butt on the way out.

I wouldn't doubt it, but it helps that hes one of the best relievers in baseball and signed for 1/4.25
   175. villageidiom Posted: April 17, 2013 at 10:34 PM (#4417518)
They just mentioned on NESN that the Red Sox never got to 6 games over .500 last year. And they confirmed the "starters with 3 runs or less in each game" thing.

Winning is fun. Winning with house money is a lot of fun.

The Mets didn't play on Sunday, Monday, and today. Tomorrow afternoon they are slated to face the Rox under sunny skies and a daytime high of 34 degreees. They return home on Friday to play the Nats but, as of now, showers are predicted. Yeesh.

Being in every game helps chemistry too*. Even the 5-0 Jays loss had Lackey looking amazing at first.

*Everyone at the plate trying to hit 5 run HR's, overthrowing, and making mental errors cause your SPs keep giving up 4 runs in the first two innings.....thassa not so good for chemistry.

On a related note, having the best player manager in the world can't help the Indians with all that mediocrity. Rays appear to have passed the tipping point that Maddenism prevents, and the Yanks *haven't* passed the tipping point of The Pinstripe Effect.

Runners on first and second, no outs, bottom of the ninth in a tie game. SLOW batter at the plate.

That has to be one of the rare circumstances where it's a pretty clearly the correct call to bunt, right?
