OMNICHATTER for April 17, 2013

Among the pitchers taking the mound today are Sabathia, Masterson, King Felix, Scherzer, Matt Moore and Kershaw. Two of those names I would not have expected to mention in the same breath as the others when the season started.

Chatter up!

Runners on first and second, no outs, bottom of the ninth in a tie game. SLOW batter at the plate.

That has to be one of the rare circumstances where it's a pretty clearly the correct call to bunt, right?

You forgot to mention that it was lefty-on-lefty too, with a hitter who doesn't hit lefties and a pitcher who has extreme splits too.

Dustin Ackley is 5-47 so far this year. Going into the game, that was -16 OPS+ and he's gone 0-3 so it's only gone down.

But that's not the crazy thing. The crazy thing is that he's reached base 7 times (5 hits and 2 walks), and scored 6 runs. WTF.

Byran Villarreal is terrible.

Is the record for longest game still that 26-inning one from back in the 1920s? Because I can totally see this M's/Tigers game challenging it.
   205. Dan Posted: April 18, 2013 at 01:09 AM (#4417613)
I believe that's still the major league record.

The longest game I have watched was a 22 inning Rockies@Padres game in 2008. They had a 14th inning stretch and a 21st inning stretch.
   206. Every Inge Counts Posted: April 18, 2013 at 01:17 AM (#4417620)
They just need 12 more strikeouts to break the AL record for most strikeouts combined in an extra inning game.

Make that 11 now.
   207. Baldrick Posted: April 18, 2013 at 01:19 AM (#4417622)
11 more strikeouts? That'll only take 3 more innings at the rate they're going. Totally within reach.
   208. Every Inge Counts Posted: April 18, 2013 at 01:39 AM (#4417628)
8 more strikeouts now.
   209. Baldrick Posted: April 18, 2013 at 01:56 AM (#4417631)
5 more.
   210. Baldrick Posted: April 18, 2013 at 01:56 AM (#4417633)
Prince Fielder: 0-6 tonight so far, with 5 strikeouts.
   211. Baldrick Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:01 AM (#4417635)
4 more.

Are you sure he hasn't reached on any errors or groundouts where the lead runner is forced out?

No, I'm sure he has. Plus he managed another hit a couple innings ago. So the synergy is already fading anyways.
   214. Dan Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:16 AM (#4417643)
I know Victor is slow, but pinch running for a guy at first with a guy who isn't even a base stealer seems pointless. Especially when it means Don Kelly is now the DH if they don't score here.
   215. Dan Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:23 AM (#4417644)
Montero is a freakin idiot.
   216. Good cripple hitter Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:24 AM (#4417645)
I agree, but the replay made that look a lot closer than I thought it was.
   217. Good cripple hitter Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:37 AM (#4417648)
That was one of the worst sends I've ever seen. He just had no chance to get home.
   218. Dan Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:37 AM (#4417649)
How slow is Smoak? I thought he'd score easily on that.
   219. Dan Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:38 AM (#4417650)
And yeah, if he reached third that late, that send was a terrible idea.
   220. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:39 AM (#4417651)
I'm assuming Seattle had no one on the bench that could have ran for Smoak?
   221. Good cripple hitter Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:40 AM (#4417652)
When the ball landed in the outfield I thought Smoak would score easily, but he wasn't even halfway home when Pena caught the ball.
   222. Randomly Fluctuating Defensive Metric Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:40 AM (#4417653)
The Mariners' poor play by play guy sounds shocked every time they get hit. It took him a second to register that ball was heading down the line.
   223. Good cripple hitter Posted: April 18, 2013 at 02:44 AM (#4417655)
Verlander starts against the Mariners tomorrow at 12:40 local time. I'd set the line at 12 K's.
