GAME NOTES:

1. David Hale makes what is likely to be his last start for a while, as Mike Minor is scheduled to take his slot in the rotation when the Braves get back to Atlanta next week. Hale will attempt to continue the WTF pitching performance from the stop-gap starters who were called in to bail out the Braves' rotation when Medlen and Beachy blew up in Florida.

2. Brandon Maurer seems to be making his first start of the season for Seattle. Not sure if he's another stop-gap starter for the M's and their rotational woes, or if he's one of the guys who was supposed to be there and is finally coming back. Ask an M's fan or someone who plays enough fantasy to keep up with both leagues these days. (i.e., not me.)

3. Shelby Miller vs Stephen Strasburg sounds like it should be a better matchup than it looks like by the numbers.

4. I have no idea who Yordano Ventura is, but he's got a really low ERA so far. See also Robbie Ross. Cross-ref the comment about not following the softball circuit from comment #2.

5. Seriously?! Jesse Chavez?!!

6. Barring Miller and Strasburg pitching to their name brands rather than their 2014 numbers, I've tapped Ubaldo Jiminez vs a resurgent Jake Peavy as the game of the day.

From USSMariner:

"Brandon Maurer will be called up to make a spot start against Miami on Sunday. The probable starter’s been labeled “TBA” for a few days, but with Beavan’s injury, the M’s didn’t have a lot of choice in the matter. It really came down to Maurer and lefty Anthony Fernandez, and Maurer’s the right call there."

How does the Vidal Nuno/Cesar Ramos matchup not get game of the day?

   6. DKDC Posted: April 20, 2014 at 01:38 PM (#4689657)
I'm not sure why the Orioles and Red Sox have the play the night game before an 11 AM Patriot's day game. I guess ESPN wanted to cash in on some of the Boston Bombing Memorial Mania?

At least they seem to be making an exception to the 8 PM start and starting it at 7.

Damn, Granderson sucks.

Today is apparently the day to give the Mets all those free runs from last night back.

The Yankees fan in me is glad to see that they got that replay right and gave Gardner an RBI double, but the aesthete in me thinks Myers put on a great show of pretending he caught it.
   12. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: April 20, 2014 at 02:39 PM (#4689685)
Granderson is just a dumpster fire right now.

If BJ Upton can be competent this year, that makes the lineup look sooooo much better.
   13. Chris Fluit Posted: April 20, 2014 at 02:40 PM (#4689686)
Captain Marvel! (Freddie Freeman hit a ground rule double to score Justin Upton)

BJ Upton. Not justin.

The Twins have DFAed Darin Mastroianni--the source of my handle!--to make room for Sam Fuld.

The Culture of Perceived Slights strikes again. Baseball will be left in the stone age if behavior like Cole's is allowed to persist.
   22. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: April 20, 2014 at 03:09 PM (#4689707)
On the one hand, Hale has gotten thoroughly screwed by his defense. On the other hand, when you walk Omar Quintanilla twice...
   23. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 20, 2014 at 03:10 PM (#4689708)
Hector Santiago, 5 IP, 2 hits, 1 unearned run, 7 strikeouts. Also 4 walks and 105 pitches, 56/49 balls/strikes. Tantalizing, maddening talent.
   24. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 20, 2014 at 03:18 PM (#4689714)
Alternately Gomez could stop showboating like a middle schooler.

I love this Twins team. Their offensive strategy is predicated on never swinging at anything.

Jayson Werth with a Nelson Cruz moment, as Strasburg threw Matt Adams a fastball.

... and TA-DA, run allowed. I say this every single game he pitches, but WHY THE ############# GOD IS ####### KEVIN ####### JEPSEN ALLOWED TO THROW IMPORTANT INNINGS!

This is the ultimate Shelby Miller game. 3 balls to ever batter, walking the world, giving up liners everywhere, and no runs allowed.

Oh, and he had an RBI double off Strasburg.

Matt Carpenter is a better defensive 2b than 3b.

This is the ultimate Shelby Miller game. 3 balls to ever batter, walking the world, giving up liners everywhere, and no runs allowed.

First inning was something like 7 pitches, after that it was close to 20 pitches an inning.

Matt Carpenter is a better defensive 2b than 3b

I think he's gold glove contender at third, but is just having a bad week/series. Outside of this series, has looked excellent at third this year(SSS of course)

   34. Guts Posted: April 20, 2014 at 03:48 PM (#4689739)
Matt Carpenter is a better defensive 2b than 3b.

He has been a trainwreck. Didn't expect that.

Choate got 2 groundballs with the bases loaded. Good work, Randy.
   35. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 20, 2014 at 03:48 PM (#4689740)
Kevin Fransden could have done that.
   36. Guts Posted: April 20, 2014 at 03:53 PM (#4689744)
Would have REALLY liked to get a baserunner there to clear the 9 spot, let Baby Pedro pitch 2 innings.
   37. Guts Posted: April 20, 2014 at 04:02 PM (#4689750)
I was all like "Isn't Ellis supposed to be a good defender?!?" and then realized it was Descalso. Because of course it was.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2014 at 04:03 PM (#4689752)
That was pretty bad.... Descalso with an error in a critical situation that could have ended the inning instead pretty much guarantees that the Nats will now tie it up.

They ruled that a single???? That is as f-ed up as them ruling Yadiers roe a double the next day (that is what happen in the first game, they ruled that bad play by Werth an error, then changed it to a double the next day)
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2014 at 04:05 PM (#4689756)
I'm thinking there is something about that field that isn't conductive to defense. These weren't iffy plays, these were almost all routine plays that just got messed up. (of course not all the errors have been 'possible' field related)

Maddon IBBs Ellsbury with runners on first and third two outs in the 11th.

Next batter--Dean Anna--puts up an incredible at bat, and draws a walk on ten pitches.

Backfire!
   66. PreservedFish Posted: April 20, 2014 at 05:51 PM (#4689808)
It didn't matter, but intentionally walking EYJ puts David Wright on deck with one out. Why on earth would you do that?

When the other team gives you four innings' worth of at-bats against Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jose Valverde, that's an engraved invitation. Your best plate appearance can't come from Gus freaking Schlosser.

Coming into today, Michael Brady had a career ERA of 2.15 over parts of five seasons (201.1 innings) and a k/w ratio of nearly 7-to-1. However, he did three things he'd never done before as a pro:
* pitched in AAA (for Salt Lake)
* started the game
* got obliterated
Lasted a third of an inning, allowing seven runs on five hits (one a homer) and two walks, striking out none. ERA for SLC: 189.00
By comparison, he allowed nine earned runs in 53 innings at AA-Jacksonville all last year.

If we're going to have to suffer through replay, we should at least also get robot umpires for balls and strikes. The home plate umpire in this game has been atrocious.

I thought that was a HR, but the fans interfering make it impossible to be sure. Not that it matters, this one is all but over.

That was a giveaway if I've ever seen one.

Not sure what you can call that a "walk off". More like a "scratch your head and say thanks"-off.

Yep, the O's really miss Machado. I think that's the third loss this year that would've probably gone the other way with Machado out there.

Man, I hope the Orioles got it all out of their system tonight.

So let's see...we had a catch that wasn't a catch, a HR that wasn't a HR...and an unreviewable tag-up play.

Gettin it right.
