The Nationals team bus, ladies and gentlemen.

Boggs demoted, Keith Butler being called up... half our bullpen problem has been fixed.

If there were ever an OKC MLB team, May would be all away games.

@ZuckermanCSN: Bryce Harper is headed for the DL, with Erik Davis summoned from Syracuse to give the #Nats bullpen a fresh arm: http://t.co/0GCHpPFXpL

You already know about Little Stevie Strasburg and his delicate oblique.

Yet Davey keeps running Danny Espinosa out there with his meager batting line, high K rate, and floating bone fragments in his wrist. Didn't Alfonso Soriano used to play 2B way back? Hmmm...

@BlueJays: The Blue Jays have placed BRANDON MORROW on 15-day DL with right forearm strain and select the contract of RAMON ORTIZ from Buffalo Bisons

It's getting to the point where there might as well just be a daily laundry list here of which pitcher went on the DL each morning, huh?

HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?

I can't believe Ortiz is still in the big leagues. I still remember arguing about whether or not he got overused in the minors when he was the Angels' best pitching prospect.
   8. Good cripple hitter Posted: June 01, 2013 at 01:08 PM (#4457708)
Blue Jays Pitchers who have been less valuable than Ramon Ortiz in 2013, per baseball reference:

Brandon Morrow
Josh Johnson
Ricky Romero
Mark Buehrle
RA Dickey
JA Happ
Sergio Santos
Darren Oliver
10 others not worth mentioning

So yeah, Ramon Ortiz is more or less tied for most valuable starting pitcher on the Blue Jays this season.
   9. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 01:34 PM (#4457719)
Justin Morneau has the flu.
   10. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 01:47 PM (#4457724)
Why does Ramon Ortiz have a gap in his B-Ref stats for 2008, 2009, and 2012?
   11. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 01:50 PM (#4457726)
#6org defense as Harang sends a ball over the catcher on a squibber.

Why does Ramon Ortiz have a gap in his B-Ref stats for 2008, 2009, and 2012?

In 2008, he was pitching for Orix in Japan. In 2009 and 2012, he spent the year in the US minors.
   13. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 02:20 PM (#4457737)
Cheese n crackers! Cain is getting knocked around, 6-0 Red Birds in the 3rd. No Beltran, no Molina in the first game of the doubleheader so Tony Cruz dutifully contributes at the plate.

Giants bullpen warming up in the 3rd inning of the first game of a doubleheader. Lovely. Just lovely.

Oh, make that 7-0 Cards.
   14. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:07 PM (#4457773)
Jason Bay. JASON BAY!?!?!?!
   15. salvomania Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:11 PM (#4457776)
Matt Cain perfect through six.

Except for the 3rd inning in which he gave up 7 runs on 9 hits. But besides that, perfect.
   16. Steve Treder Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:34 PM (#4457785)
And Cain was perfect again in the 4th, 5th, and 6th.

He pitched five perfect innings, and finished with zero walks allowed and nine strikeouts and six innings.

That is very likely the weirdest start I have ever witnessed.
   17. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:41 PM (#4457794)
... That's weird.
   18. Russlan is fond of Dillon Gee Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:41 PM (#4457795)
Jason Bay. JASON BAY!?!?!?!

Good for him. Bay did not play well for the Mets but he did his best and carried himself well. It would have been nice for him to have played well for the Mets but that didn't happen.
   19. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:44 PM (#4457799)
Tony Cruz with his 2d double of the day. I think this is his best offensive performance ever.

EDIT: Yep. First ever day with 2 XBH.
   20. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 03:59 PM (#4457819)
Cards win the front end 8-0. Wainwright goes tonight against a reportedly Posey-less lineup.
   21. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 04:10 PM (#4457833)
Descalso 2 for 3 today. WOO HOO!!
   22. Baldrick Posted: June 01, 2013 at 04:13 PM (#4457836)
Tom Wilhelmsen has now walked the bases loaded. Oi.
   23. Baldrick Posted: June 01, 2013 at 04:18 PM (#4457843)
And Doumit clears the bases.

Game over.

Ugh.
   24. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 04:24 PM (#4457852)
Caleb Thielbar??!!
   25. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 04:29 PM (#4457860)
Ryan Doumit had a walk-off triple. I doubt that has ever been written before.
   26. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:04 PM (#4457867)
Tigers go back-to-back-to-back HRs, Hammel hits Tuiasosopo, gets run.
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:05 PM (#4457868)
Jason Hammel gives up three straight homers, hits the next batter near the head, is tossed, and complains. Get ######.
   28. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:05 PM (#4457869)
The Orioles might want to consider not giving Up home runs here.

Hammels cn argue but when you give up three straight homers then hit te next guy between the numbers on the first pitch you re gonna get run. I understand why Hammel is upset but that's gonna get called every time.
   29. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:05 PM (#4457870)
I mean, in his defense, it looked like a breaking ball, and he'd already shown an absence of command, but still, peculiar timing to hit someone after giving up three longballs.
   30. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:08 PM (#4457872)
Okay, so, do the Tigers retaliate?
   31. DKDC Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:09 PM (#4457873)
I don't think it was intentional, but he should get tossed. And as an Os fan, it may be for the better.
   32. DKDC Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:14 PM (#4457874)
Welp, at least my Saturday afternoon freed up. I have an totally unwarranted good feeling about Gausman tomorrow.
   33. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:14 PM (#4457875)
McFarland clearly does not have that closer mentality.
   34. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:16 PM (#4457877)
Who didn't see that coming?
   35. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:16 PM (#4457878)
Miguel Cabrera is a very good ballplayer.
   36. Gwyn Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:18 PM (#4457879)
That's four homers, eight runs and no outs for the Tigers in the fourth.
   37. Russlan is fond of Dillon Gee Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:20 PM (#4457883)
Miggy has a pretty good shot at getting a second straight Triple Crown, doesn't he?
   38. Srul Itza Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:22 PM (#4457885)
Yeah, but after that last homer, the Tigers are making outs. Homers are rally killers, I tell ya.

EDIT: Well maybe not all homers, but grand slams, definitely
   39. Srul Itza Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:23 PM (#4457886)
Miggy has a pretty good shot at getting a second straight Triple Crown, doesn't he?

Yeah, provided Chris Davis falls to Earth.

It appears the Orioles pitching staff today is interested in giving Miggy a boost.
   41. base ball chick Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:26 PM (#4457890)
how is that a walkoff TRIPLE?

the runner at second crossed the plate waaaaay before doumit got beyond second - and no WAY does someone that slow get to third if no one is on base
   42. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:39 PM (#4457896)
I would have supported IBB Miggy in that instance. 1 run is better than 4 runs for the beleaguered Orioles.
   43. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:41 PM (#4457897)
Lordy, lordy, I hate Delmon Young. And Ruben Amaro for wishcasting him as a major league OF.
   44. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: June 01, 2013 at 05:46 PM (#4457901)
So far today Carlos Gonzalez has hit a HR and a triple, made a great diving catch in LF and also threw out a runner at home.
   45. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2013 at 06:17 PM (#4457917)
Lassus!

Oh, Wieters almost made this a semi-game there...
   46. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 06:45 PM (#4457927)
I suspect that Lassus saw the Mets @ Marlins score and broke out his do-it-yourself hari kari kit.
   47. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: June 01, 2013 at 06:48 PM (#4457928)
if lucroy can hit just a little that gives the brewers a 5 man offense versus 4

that's something

I suspect that Lassus saw the Mets @ Marlins score and broke out his do-it-yourself hari kari kit.

Yeah, I figured as well. And if not, the part buried in the lede of what I linked to will make him break it out.

Someone get Harveys a drink. Ideally something incredibly strong.
   55. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 07:16 PM (#4457948)
This is not much of a lineup for the Giants.
   56. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 01, 2013 at 07:18 PM (#4457950)
Does anyone know what happened to Carl Crawford? I'm going to assume hamstring pull.

This is not much of a lineup for the Cardinals.
   58. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 07:39 PM (#4457956)
Wainwright already has 4 Ks. This is going to be a low scoring game.

Both pitchers have hits. NL baseball!
   61. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 07:58 PM (#4457964)
It took an assist by Gio Gonzalez to hand B. J. Upton a base hit.
   62. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: June 01, 2013 at 07:58 PM (#4457965)
BJ Upton gets a hit! On a fastball!

And Dan Harmon is returning to "Community!" This is already an incredible day.
   63. Sweatpants Posted: June 01, 2013 at 08:00 PM (#4457966)
There is no play in baseball that I hate more than the sac bunt with runners on the corners that isn't intended to score the guy on third.

Two out scoring for the Cardinals... They are pretty good at that play.
   66. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 08:06 PM (#4457971)
Cards score two runs on a 30 bouncer. Freese gets a hit that rolls about 10 feet. When you're hot, you're hot.

And now Wiggy HBP. Unfortunately, doesn't look like he will miss any time.

Descalso doesn't add on to his playing time. He may be off the roster by 2025 now.
   67. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 08:15 PM (#4457973)

THINK? THINK? Seguera never caught the ball, Kendrick gets his hand in, Seguera picks up the rolling ball with his bare hand. Ump signals out. Even if the ump didn't see the rolling ball, how did Seguera get the ball into his bare hand when his bare hand never reached into the glove?
   71. JJ1986 Posted: June 01, 2013 at 08:43 PM (#4457990)
Joe Buck is completely making up stats that the majority of minor league players pick Derek Jeter as their most admired player.
   72. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 08:47 PM (#4457995)
Wow, Freese makes a great play there.
   73. Joey B.: posting for the kids of northeast Ohio Posted: June 01, 2013 at 08:50 PM (#4457996)
Holy ####, I think that might be the first time in well over a year that Zimmerman didn't throw the ball sidearm!

If your team gets a Grans Slam hit against you, in the absence of other data, how often do you go on to lose that game?
   77. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 09:23 PM (#4458016)
Two out scoring for the Cardinals... They are pretty good at that play.

The solution for their opponents is simple: strike out the first batter of the inning, put the second guy on 1B, then get the third guy to GIDP. They'll never get to 2 outs in stand-alone fashion, so they'll never win again. QED

I will be STUNNED if the Cards do not lead the league in GIDP.

Wow, they are only 4th. Angels lead with 5 more.

I guess the reason that I was able to watch the beginning (and no more!) of the Orioles game this afternoon was because Fox had bought out tonight's games. I thought the rule was Fox had everything after 13:07 and before 19:03 or something odd like that?
   82. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 01, 2013 at 09:36 PM (#4458026)
Actually, Tim, right now, *that's* ####### terrifying ...

Give yourself some props if you though Napoli could get an infield single with Ortiz on first.
   84. Guts Posted: June 01, 2013 at 09:50 PM (#4458034)
Cards take both ends of the doubleheader, combined score 15-1. Pretty good day.
   85. Esoteric Posted: June 01, 2013 at 09:52 PM (#4458036)
Craig Kimbrel couldn't have chosen a better possible time to crack up.

EDIT: Then again, he could well escape from the inning without any damage.
   86. Esoteric Posted: June 01, 2013 at 09:56 PM (#4458041)
GODDAMMIT.

From runners at 2nd & 3rd with none out to no runs scoring. This team is so frustrating. We deserve to lose.

(N.B. I posted this before the last out on the assumption that of course Danny Espinosa would make a weak out, and of course I wasn't disappointed.)
   87. Joey B.: posting for the kids of northeast Ohio Posted: June 01, 2013 at 09:58 PM (#4458043)

God dammit Vernon wells you miserable piece of #### there have been 4 "hits" by my count in this game that should've been outs and four runs that shouldn't have happen thanks to your miserable "jumps" in LF which are the jumps of a parkinsonian paraplegic. You are the worst left fielder ever at least for tonight's game and you are like the gay love child of Greg luzinski and Dave kingman and uglier too.
   96. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 10:19 PM (#4458064)
Who's catching for the Braves now?

edit: Oh, Laird. Forgot about him. Forgettable, but pitcher's spot due up after B. J.
   97. Esoteric Posted: June 01, 2013 at 10:19 PM (#4458066)
Few things more predictable than a Henry Rodriguez pitching appearance: BALL BALL BALL BALL BALL BALL BALL HOME RUN BALL.

EDIT: To be fair, at least one of those "balls" was an obvious strike. Guess even the ump got lazy and just assumed that because it was H-Rod it would be a ball.
   98. Esoteric Posted: June 01, 2013 at 10:22 PM (#4458071)
Not like Henry Rodriguez has earned the benefit of the doubt, but the umpire's zone has actually been rather ungenerous to him.
   99. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: June 01, 2013 at 10:24 PM (#4458076)
The Gameday widget shows pitches 2 & 3 to Uggla were just inside the strike zone. Not on the edge, but inside it. Still called ball 2 and ball 3.

Game over, man! Game over! B. J. "K" Upton.

World Series or BUST!
   100. Sweatpants Posted: June 01, 2013 at 10:26 PM (#4458079)
Upton, who hasn't been able to catch up to fastballs all season, wins it with a single off a 100-MPH heater. Good for him.
