Does anyone know if Zach Clark is throwing knuckleballs in games yet?

This isn't that helpful but according to Fangraphs' pitch data he hasn't thrown any yet.

The Twins are offensively bad.

I'm not even sure the Twins offensively *are.*

Harper's holding his knee after stealing 3rd. Probably just a contusion, but that's not a happy sight, unless you're Sam.

My MLB.tv is pausing to load more video every 15-60 seconds. It's making it unwatchable, as the Nats should do along about the 7th inning or so. Is this happening to others?

I guess everybody's watching baseball today on a Sunday of a holiday weekend. Go figure.

Weird infielding going on in the Rays-Yankees game. Actually just a really weird inning so far.

It's getting tough to envision a scenario in which the Cubs ever win another game.
   11. Jim Wisinski Posted: May 26, 2013 at 02:27 PM (#4452451)
Now in the next half-inning we have a blown call! An umpire actually called the "first baseman takes his foot off the bag before really catching the ball" play safe for the runner.....except Loney's foot was still on the damn base when he caught it. Not exactly the right time to be cracking down on that play.

Surely they have games against Miami or Houston left?

Harper Hobbled, Hits Hurt: Bryce Harper fouls a ball off the outer part of his left knee. The comparisons between him and Mickey Mantle are starting to look a little closer lately. He needs the All-Star Break yesterday.

I gleefully look forward to Harper's alcohol and drug induced spiral out of control!

Kevin Frandsen has been ejaculated out of the game for spiking his bat in the umpire's face.

Carlos Rodon yesterday: 10 IP, 1 H, 1 run (unearned), two walks, 14 strikeouts, 130 pitches. And a no-decision.

North Carolina won an epic game with NC State that lasted 18 innings, 6:03 of playing time, and ended at 1:51 AM local time. The Heels picked up an unearned run in the 8th to tie it after holding off repeated threats by the Wolfpack, got out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the 13th and two-out threats in the 14th and 17th, took the lead in the top of the 18th against a pitcher who had allowed only one earned run all season before last night, and then had to hold off the Wolfpack again after Brett Williams led off the bottom half with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Heels were forced to start freshman pitcher Taylore Cherry today against Virginia Tech after 32 innings of baseball the last two days. Coming into the game Cherry had thrown just 3 1/3 innings all season. Today he's thrown 5 shutout innings as the Heels lead Virginia Tech 2-0.

UConn just made some bubble team's life miserable by defeating Notre Dame 8-1 in the Big East final, winning the conference's automatic bid. The Huskies had no chance at an at-large bid. My guess is that this knocks Pitt out, and possible the Irish or Seton Hall as well.

Heh heh. I'm restricting my remarks to physical impairment.

Then again, knowing how those who give up drinking or smoking become insufferable evangelicals of temperance, maybe the tee-totaling Harper will fall off the wagon and emulate Mantle in other ways one day?

That's hard to swallow.

Virginia Tech picks up a run in the sixth. Leadoff double by Tyler Horan, infield single for Mark Zagunis with Horan moving to third on a throwing error, HBP to load the bases, then a DP grounder to plate the run. Trevor Kelley in for UNC, gets out of the inning with just the lone run.

sometimes defense shifts go overboard. the brewers were so kittywompus on a shift against the 8th hitter they turned a single to left-center into a triple

   22. bunyon Posted: May 26, 2013 at 02:48 PM (#4452469)
Mike, thanks for the updates. I can't post from my phone but have been following the updates the last few days here. Wish I could have got away for a few games.

Frandsen got kicked for turing around, staring at the ump and spiking his bat. I think every ump in the game tosses him.

He may also have gotten tossed for making the home plate ump look bad a few innings earlier by running into a pitch while trying to bunt. Or, perhaps, the umpire simply decided he can't actually play baseball and did us all a favor.

ok so lucroy hits a knuckling liner to the shortstop who drops it but because lucroy never bothered to really run gets him easily at first

yes lucroy is slow but if he was busting it out of the box versus deciding 'well, that's caught' and not running to start maybe the shortstop rushes the throw and lucroy makes it

g9ddamiit that sh8t ticks me off.

I cannot think weeks is going to get too many more chances. the fans are upset, the owner has gone public with being upset and since you can't fix an entire pitching staff weeks is the obvious head to chop off
   25. DKDC Posted: May 26, 2013 at 02:57 PM (#4452476)
I'm pretty sure the Orioles aren't allowed to win this game after squandering 14 base runners (5 of the hits were doubles) into only 2 runs in 6 innings.
   26. Mike Emeigh Posted: May 26, 2013 at 02:57 PM (#4452477)
Great game in the Big 12 yesterday too. Oklahoma led 5-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, but Kansas State battled back to tie it at 5. The Sooners jumped on top in the 10th, but once again the Wildcats fought back. Oklahoma took the lead again in the top of the 11th, only to see K-State load the bases with one out before junior righthander Kyle Hayes notched the save by striking out the last two batters. Oklahoma has jumped out an early 5-1 lead on Kansas in the title match, getting a two-run homer from Matt Oberste in the third.

brewer fans give the brewers manager all kinds of grief for burning through his bullpen but when every starter is ready to pass out from exhaustion by the 5th inning what's a guy to do? Gallardo is at 62 pitches and not out of the 3rd inning. and he's acting like he wants to be pulled which I have not seen before

boy has this team lost its gumption

Nebraska beat Indiana last night in the Big 10 tournament, 7-6 in 11 innings, to force a second game today. Indiana leads that one 3-2 in the 7th but the Huskers have the bases loaded, 2 out, and top hitter Chad Christensen up.

when gaby sanchez can score from first on a double to the corner, albeit with two outs, without even a throw to the plate your team's defense is pretty awful.

I did a quick tracer on that Royals-Sox game from 1977. Near as I can tell, they were correct about everything, except that Gov. Quinn said Hal McRae hit two homers for the Royals; it was actually just one homer, but he was three for five with a double and a homer and four RBIs. Probably felt like two homers.
   39. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: May 26, 2013 at 03:10 PM (#4452492)
Bryce Harper is absolutely NOT 100%, not even 70% with his gimpy knee. Even at 50%, he's still the Nats' best option out there. Sad.

Harper's hitting .185/.308/.370 in May. At least he's taking his walks.

I will repeat myself that a right-handed heavy lineup has to make hay when the sun shines. the pirates throw lefties back to back and the brewers are getting overwhelmed. just cannot happen when you get the platoon advantage for an entire team

it's just not acceptable

Sophomore C Tanner Lubach drives in the tying run with a sac fly for Nebraska in the 8th. Indiana is rising freshman lefty Will Coursen-Carr pretty hard in this one.

UNC picks up two unearned runs on Mantiply's throwing error and a Brian Holberton SF. 4-1 going to the ninth.

Speaking of good offenses, it's crazy how quickly a good offense can use a break to quickly escalate an inning. Mike Pelfrey was an out from getting through the sixth only giving up two runs to the Tigers. But then Alex Avila dumped in a pop-up between left and short, scoring a run, driving Pelfrey from the game. Relievers then let three runs score, two of which belonged to Pelfrey. 6-1.

Nats Park is suddenly the house of thrills. Let's see:

Zimmerman, LaRoche both single, runners at 1B+2B

Desmond bunts them over. Not the strangest call since he's a pretty TTO guy, but still he has power and could drive the ball if he's lucky.

This brings up Tyler Moore, Jhonatan Solano, Steve Lombardozzi with their weak bats. After going 3-0 to helpless Moore, Hamels IBB him, bases loaded. Solano bangs a bouncer to 3B, but Michael Young's throw home was not handled cleanly and Zimmerman scores; they scored an error to Young, but I think the catcher could have at least blocked it.

Then Lombo doubles in Moore and Solano to make it 3-0. I didn't see exactly what happened, but _elm_n Young was waddling towards the ball that had deflected off the part of the stands that jut out towards the field. It seemed like an eternity before he got there, so Lombo took 3rd on what Gameday is calling a "missed catch" by _. Young.

What a mess! And while I was typing all that it appears that the score is now 4-0 Nats.

And Strasburg just struck out for the first time today. What a game!

After Harper bangs one into the RF corner foul, he takes a mighty hack and can barely keep his feet, his legs are killing him so bad. This is ridiculous, sit him down so he can at least rest, if not heal.

edit: Davey heard me, Bernadina pinch running for Harper.

Trace Knoblauch, a senior for Indiana who hasn't played much this year, comes up in the 8th as a pinch-hitter with bases loaded and two outs and a chance to put the Hoosiers back on top, but flies out to end the inning. He's Chuck's nephew.

Hoosiers and Huskers tied at 3, headed to the 9th. Coursen-Carr still out there.

Nope, you're correct. Moore and Cobb are fantastic, Hernandez needs to be DFA'd weeks ago, and Hellickson and Price have generally been crap. The bullpen is mediocre at best; Peralta has been good, McGee seems to be pretty much back to normal after an awful start, but Rodney is an utter disaster. Also, Farnsworth is looking mighty toasty these days.

So the Nats really are stretching him out. He's up to 6'5" now.

You can tell things have gone wrong with the Brewers this season when the most exciting thing happening with the team is Donovan Hand getting called up. It's just ridiculous. After last year, it was all "Fix the bullpen!!!" The 'pen is fixed, all right, except when half of it is hurt. The starting rotation just went all to heck and Nashville's isn't any better. Narveson should be back Real Soon Now (supposedly 2 weeks, not holding my breath, it's Narveson we're talking about) but that isn't the earth-shattering kaboom the rotation needs right now.

What gets me is that there are 4 players on the team in the league top 25 for batting average and 3 in the top 25 for OPS and they can't seem to buy a run right now.

Harveys, I'm still between my two weekends when they let me out of the compound, so you have to forgive my ignorance.

Meanwhile, Tyler Clipboard is on for the Nats in the 9th inning. Which is impossible since he's not THE CLOSER, so there must have been a mistake somewhere. Let's see if he can hold this 6-1 lead.

Kennesaw State, the #7 seed, knocked off #3 seed North Florida 4-2 earlier today, and faces #4 seed East Tennessee State in the Atlantic Sun final. The winner of this one is going to take another slot away from a bubble team, as top-seeded Mercer is assured a slot in the NCAA field.

Trouble in Toronto. Bases loaded, 1 out, bottom 9th, 5-3 Orioles w/Jim Johnson on the mound.

Josh Donaldson hitting .326 with a .400 OBA now. It took a while, but the Rich Harden trade finally looks like a winner!
