Full slate today… weather permitting, as always.

Not in Miami. They hide away inside their indoor soccer stadium come wind, rain, sleet, snow, or hurricane.

Cliff Lee versus Big Pusssy. This could be a good one.

Come on Big Pusssy, let's see if you can keep that incredible 14 K/9 rate going.
   3. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: May 02, 2014 at 12:06 PM (#4698857)
You know, Joey, you really aren't endearing yourself to anybody by insisting on calling Stephen Strasburg "Big Pussy." It just makes you look like a vulgar clown. It's embarrassing, even just to read.
   4. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: May 02, 2014 at 12:23 PM (#4698869)
Mike Minor will make his season debut tonight.
   5. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 01:15 PM (#4698932)
Well, his dramatic meltdowns that happen almost every time something goes wrong are embarrassing both to himself, and his team. They also have to be hell on his poor teammates, who must be on eggshells whenever he pitches, thinking that can't afford to make any mistakes in the field.

I've simply never seen a guy with so much natural talent who was also so mentally weak and unstable.
   6. JJ1986 Posted: May 02, 2014 at 02:07 PM (#4699001)
The Twins will have 14 pitchers in uniform tonight.

The Twins will have 14 pitchers in uniform tonight.

14 alleged pitchers
   8. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: May 02, 2014 at 03:53 PM (#4699105)
The Twins will have 14 pitchers in uniform tonight.

So two man bench. A backup catcher and a super utility guy? Or is there a position that's not being backed up?
   9. JJ1986 Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:01 PM (#4699114)
I think it will be an infielder and C/OF Chris Herrmann. I don't know who is backing up CF though. I'd guess Jason Kubel, but he's never played there.
   10. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:04 PM (#4699119)
Ramiro Pena starting at second. Perhaps the beginning of the end for Uggla.
   11. Nasty Nate Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:23 PM (#4699132)
The Dodgers have called up Choney Figgins. I thought he was long out of baseball.
   12. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:23 PM (#4699134)
#7--The Twins' 9-man bullpen for tonight's game: Glen Perkins, Jared Burton, Anthony Swarzak, Brian Duensing, Casey Fien, Caleb Thielbar, Samuel Deduno, Michael Tonkin, and Logan Darnell.
   13. esseff Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:24 PM (#4699136)
Adam Wainwright has given up just six runs in his past 30 innings.

How's that for seeing the glass half full?
   14. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:24 PM (#4699137)
#9-- Shortstop Pedro Florimon played a game in center field in AAA in 2011. That appears to be the most recent experience among our infielders.

Eduardo Escobar (our backup shortstop) has played a bit of left field this year.
   15. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:31 PM (#4699141)
#7--The Twins' 9-man bullpen for tonight's game: Glen Perkins, Jared Burton, Anthony Swarzak, Brian Duensing, Casey Fien, Caleb Thielbar, Samuel Deduno, Michael Tonkin, and Logan Darnell.

At least four of those guys were in the starting rotation of previous Twins teams, including Deduno as recently as last year. Logan Darnell has done almost nothing but start in his four-year minor-league career. So I can certainly see why the team is prepared for none of them to face more than three batters.
   16. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4699144)
When the Twins win tonight's game in the 22nd inning, we'll have the last laugh.
   17. Good cripple hitter Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4699146)
The Dodgers have called up Choney Figgins. I thought he was long out of baseball.

He made the team out of spring training and had 9 pinch hit appearances before they sent him to AAA.
   18. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 04:39 PM (#4699150)
#11--Where did you find the news about Figgins? Thanks!
   19. bfan Posted: May 02, 2014 at 05:19 PM (#4699183)
Ramiro Pena starting at second. Perhaps the beginning of the end for Uggla.

We can only hope. Tommy La Stella continues to hit well in AAA, as he has done at every level. Come on Frank Wren, admit your mistake on Uggla and let's field the best team we can.
   20. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: May 02, 2014 at 06:40 PM (#4699241)
Woah, Ryu just got DL'd. That news basically came out of nowhere.
   21. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: May 02, 2014 at 06:55 PM (#4699248)
Begin the thawing of Brad Penny!
   22. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:13 PM (#4699255)
From the looks of this crowd, a lot of Phillies fans have officially reached the Acceptance stage of grief.
   23. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:21 PM (#4699258)
A's-Red Sox: tough strike zone for the pitchers tonight.

EDIT: I was hoping the A's would start Barton at first, because I like Barton, and Barton seems to hit Buchholz well (which DH Callaspo does not). Ah, well.
   24. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:24 PM (#4699260)
Wow, an error followed by three unearned runs for Stras. Who could have ever imagined something like that happening?
   25. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:34 PM (#4699262)
How long has Clay Buchholz been using meth?
   26. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:38 PM (#4699266)
THE MIGHTY THETHPEDETH hits a rocket double - Crisp & Lowrie hit the ball hard, too (A's radio announcers just now talking about this).
   27. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:41 PM (#4699270)
Wait, Brad Penny can't really still be playing baseball can he?
   28. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:44 PM (#4699272)
Tyler Moore has figured Cliff Lee out. Seemingly alone among NL East ballplayers.
   29. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:46 PM (#4699273)
Least predictable at-bat ever: Cliff Lee four-pitch walk to...Stephen Strasburg. No, I don't understand it either.
   30. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:47 PM (#4699276)
Also, P-sizz hits Straily very well.
   31. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 07:48 PM (#4699277)
Oh, Tyler Moore. I always wanted my Twins to acquire you somehow !

Sort of strange that the A's and Giants are both out of town, like 3,000 miles out of town, this weekend.
   34. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:03 PM (#4699285)
[33] What is strange about that? Do schedule makers try to have teams that share a market stagger their home games?
   35. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:09 PM (#4699287)
Do schedule makers try to have teams that share a market stagger their home games?

I think they do - the Giants and A's are almost always home at staggered times; but when both are at home, they almost always play at the same time.

Harveys, are you watching the reds-brewers? Do you think the umps just cost votto a hr? Sure looks like it bounced off the railing right beyond the wall
   37. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:23 PM (#4699289)
Watching teams on Extra Innings is fun because you get to see all the local commercials. I've now seen the same commercial for Jack Kingston's Senate run multiple times. It features his kids talking about how cheap he is. As far as silly commercials for crummy politicians go, it's half-charming. His kids aren't bad actors.
   38. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:26 PM (#4699290)
Just sit down Span, they didn't do anything wrong.
   39. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:41 PM (#4699292)
Jayson Werth has not had his best game ever in this return to Philly.
   40. Al Kaline Trio Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:44 PM (#4699293)
Why is Buchholz always looking down and shuffling his feet like he's in trouble or something?
   41. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:54 PM (#4699297)
Minor has looked pretty good. A bit hittable, but the Giants are a good team, and he's throwing strikes. Stuff looks about at it's usual level. Very encouraging.
   42. Lassus Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:55 PM (#4699298)
Let's see if the Mets can get one tonight.
   43. Lassus Posted: May 02, 2014 at 08:59 PM (#4699300)
Ugh. This is not optimal for Wheeler.
   44. Lassus Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:01 PM (#4699302)
Well, I was bad luck. Wheeler looking very meh.

Fernando Abad, bullpen weapon.

Damn. Morse's homer looked like a pop-up.
   47. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:14 PM (#4699309)
Damn. Morse's homer looked like a pop-up.

So far, Morse's average HR has been longer than anybody in baseball. Which I would not have guessed.
   48. Lassus Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:16 PM (#4699310)
I have a bad feeling this Rockies series is going to be the return to the mean for the Mets.
   49. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:21 PM (#4699312)
The Braves' performance with RISP is just comically inept, particularly with two outs. That HAS to change, right?
   50. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:21 PM (#4699313)
ANTHONY RENDON IS MY MAN.

EDIT: Also, for a guy who's only batting a measly .233 I have to say that Denard Span sure feels like he's been a lot more valuable and clutch than the numbers might lead you to think. That's the "get off of my lawn!" grumpy old guy in my talking, I know...
   51. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:21 PM (#4699315)
40--re Buchholz

I would assume that's the methamphetamines.
   52. boteman Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:21 PM (#4699316)
So glad to be back home at World HQ. I'm stuck with XM in the car and they only play the home broadcast. Larry Anderson and Franze/Franzke/Frandsen/what's-his-name spent most of the inning rambling on about some auction that I can't attend 1500 miles away. I think I heard "he swings and fouls one off" one time, but woe be unto them to tell you what else was happening in the baseball game right the hell in front of them. What a waste of electrons!

Anyway, in baseball news it looks like the Nats are priming themselves for another one of their patented late inning comebacks.
   53. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:23 PM (#4699317)
El Martillo does it again.

So far, Morse's average HR has been longer than anybody in baseball. Which I would not have guessed.
As Nats fan, I can tell you that this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. What has surprised (and thrilled!) me is his ability to thrive in AT&T ballpark, which almost feels like it was purposefully designed to suppress his strength. Very happy to see that's not the case.

Anytime and anywhere Mike Morse succeeds will be cause for most Nats fans to smile, just so long as he doesn't do it at our direct expense. I really can't think of any other ex-National who remains quite as beloved by rank-and-file fans (myself included, obviously) as Morse. He's a lovably goofy giant.

Anthony Rendon, Jayson Werth, Adam LaRoche: unlikely as it might have seemed before the start of the season, that's turning out to be a true Murderer's Row of hitters in the Nats' batting order.
   59. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:32 PM (#4699327)
This Phillies bullpen is positively Angels-like.

(With apologies to LA Hombre, who will probably check in on this thread at some point tonight and is an awesome guy.)
   60. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:32 PM (#4699328)
Yep, Philly's bullpen sucks donkey balls, and I ain't complaining!
   61. Lassus Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:33 PM (#4699329)
It will be interesting to see if the Tulo non-rundown will be a story tomorrow.
   62. Lassus Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:38 PM (#4699330)
This Granderson era is going to be very very painful.
   63. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:48 PM (#4699333)
Brian Dozier now leads the American League in stolen bases. He's also fourth in homers and third in walks. Oh, and he's a plus defender at second base.

What a fantastic player. It's been so fun watching him blossom into an all-star like this!
   64. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:53 PM (#4699337)
Braves continue their locking-up spree. Three years and $23.5 million for Chris Johnson. Yes, the guy who was a throw-in in the Justin Upton trade a year ago. And was traded by the Astros for not much, a few months before that.
   65. Joey B. Posted: May 02, 2014 at 10:18 PM (#4699345)

Last night's game was the 1,213th of Joe Mauer's career, including the postseason.

By losing, this dropped the Twins' record in those games to 606 and 607.

They'll need a 9th inning rally to get him back to .500 tonight. Let's do it!
   68. Bourbon Samurai Posted: May 02, 2014 at 10:31 PM (#4699354)

So of ####### course Ricky Nolasco pitches the Twins' first complete game of the year.

How the hell does that happen?

Long run down between 1st & 2nd, eventually abandoned to get a runner at home.
   78. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 03, 2014 at 12:03 AM (#4699387)
Going to the lucky bottom of the 13th, still tied 5-5 @ Yankee Stadium.
   79. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 03, 2014 at 12:16 AM (#4699391)
Whoa, and now the Rays botch a rundown in the 13th!

Looks like the shift was to blame.
   80. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 03, 2014 at 12:16 AM (#4699392)
5-man infield for Tampa. 1 out, runners on 2nd and 3rd, tie game.
   81. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 03, 2014 at 12:17 AM (#4699394)
Even after all the run down practice depicted in #75, Rays blow rundown in 13th, leaving Yankees at 2nd & 3rd, 1 out. Rays 5-man infield gets 2nd out. (3-9 putout), back to regular defense for IBB to Ellsbury, bases loaded for Jeter.
   82. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 03, 2014 at 12:22 AM (#4699395)
I'm going to guess that's the first time a team has opted to intentionally walk someone to set up the opportunity to pitch to Derek Jeter with the bases loaded.
   83. Dale Sams Posted: May 03, 2014 at 12:24 AM (#4699396)
I want to see some IBBs to get to the Yankee pitcher now that the bench is empty.

Rays play some 12 hours of baseball in the last 36 hours and win all 3 games.
