Reds at Pirates. Cueto vs Wandy. Cueto is 12-4, 2.52 in 20 career starts against the Bucs; his first outing against them this year was the one in which he got hurt. Wandy is 8-11, 4.33 in 29 career starts against Cincy, was 0-1, 3.66 in three starts last year with the Pirates after coming over, didn't face them earlier this year. Seven games against the Reds over the next 19.

Need some help, posting this in today's Chatter and Dugout.

Need a rec on 'good semi-fancy Mexican restaurant' in Chicago for my buddy's bachelor party. Having spent all of about 16 hours in Chicago in my lifetime, I don't know why the two guys who went to Northwestern want my help planning it, but you do what you gotta. Preferably a place that takes reservations - evidently Topolobampo and Frontera have been dismissed for this reason. Any ideas at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?

This is too easy. But I'll say they win by whatever means strikes their fancy...and by scoring at least twice as many runs as Houston.
Also, the Astros are a torrid 7-7 in their last 14 games, so they have to cool off soon, or the Marlins will get away from them.

Somewhat lost in the Braves' other struggles (BJ Upton, Uggla, Heyward, the bullpen injuries) is that Justin Upton has not had a good month of May. Still drawing walks, but not much power and rather easily blown away by fastballs.
   8. Gamingboy Posted: May 31, 2013 at 04:07 PM (#4457149)
I am required to show Lassus this.

But, more importantly, anyone else kind of what there to be some inadvertent beanball war in the Sox-Yanks game tonight, y'know, just to send the rivalry back onto an upward path.
   9. DA Baracus Posted: May 31, 2013 at 04:23 PM (#4457169)
Justin Upton has not had a good month of May.

He's struggled but yet is still the best option to start. I'll worry about him if he keeps struggling in June, for now I'm chalking it up to regression to the mean after a ridiculous April.

Heyward leading off is one of those things that makes me want to rethink my opinion that lineup order is largely irrelevant.
   10. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 31, 2013 at 04:53 PM (#4457200)
Sure, I'm not screaming, "BENCH UPTON!" Nor am I ready to beg for Prado back. Just one of those trends I've been eyeing warily for a while.

I was stunned at how easily the Dodgers struck him out in the Sunday sweep game a few weeks back. Just (good, but not great) fastballs on the outer half of the plate, and he kept swinging late. For someone with such great bat speed he can be pretty easily exploited by decent heat.
   11. DA Baracus Posted: May 31, 2013 at 05:10 PM (#4457212)
Sure, I'm not screaming, "BENCH UPTON!" Nor am I ready to beg for Prado back.

I didn't interpret it as that. I'm just saying, I'm not yet too concerned. Lots of guys have bad months and rebound. And really the last two weeks have killed him (or basically, since that Dodgers series). He was doing fine but not great earlier, on May 16th he was hitting 283/407/413 for the month. 171/244/195 the last two weeks. Which is still better than BJ or Heyward. Ouch. Anyone can hit anything in 60 PAs. If he's still struggling in two weeks, then I'll be concerned.
   12. starving to death with a full STEAGLES Posted: May 31, 2013 at 05:27 PM (#4457226)
if domonic brown does not walk tonight, he'll be the first person in MLB history to end a month with 10 HRs and 0 BBs.

   13. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 31, 2013 at 06:14 PM (#4457254)
Gattis and McCann both in the lineup tonight, which is significant only because Fredi had previously been insistent that Laird catch Teheran (Gattis is playing left). As someone pointed out in the Wood-Francisco thread, the Braves have seemingly been much more willing to adjust and tinker on the fly over the last couple seasons. I guess the 2011 collapse really shook them up (in a good way).
   14. spike Posted: May 31, 2013 at 06:17 PM (#4457257)
If Fredi has signed up for a Leylandian "If you hit you play" ethos, I won't be too bummed out for the moment. This is actually a pretty optimized lineup for Strasburg.
   15. spike Posted: May 31, 2013 at 06:21 PM (#4457260)
and opposing a lineup of Span CF, Lombardozzi LF, Zimmerman 3B, LaRoche 1B, Desmond SS, Bernadina RF, Espinosa 2B, Suzuki C, Strasburg P I definitely don't mind going offense heavy.
   16. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 06:43 PM (#4457270)
Allow me to apologize in advance for the World Series-bound Nationals' trouncing as they sweep the Braves this weekend.

Aw hell, who am I kidding?! If the Nats can squeak out of town with a single victory, that in itself will be a victory. They can't hit (aside from that outburst mid-week), their fielding is still somewhat irritating, and the bullpen is a veritable roller coaster ride. This series will be nothing if not exciting, and not in a good way. Reinforce the edge of your seat.
   17. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:05 PM (#4457278)
Just hit the ball to the Braves' outfield !
As for the Red Sox-Yankees... too bad it's played in ugly Yankee Stadium 2 and Pedroia is on the wrong team ! Go Knicks...uhm, Nix ! A beanball festival would be nice to at least make it somewhat thrilling.

   18. Los Angeles El Hombre de Anaheim Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:08 PM (#4457280)
Also, the Astros are a torrid 7-7 in their last 14 games, so they have to cool off soon, or the Marlins will get away from them.
Tommy Hanson hasn't pitched in a while, so he may be rusty. On the other hand, Dallas Keuchel seems to have gotten worse with each progressive start. I see a slugfest in our future. If the Angels can somehow take two of three from the Astros, they'll be only — ONLY — two games under .500. It's beyond me to hope for a sweep.
   19. Los Angeles El Hombre de Anaheim Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:09 PM (#4457282)

I have ... low hopes for this game.

Always good to see the "Moat" seats 30% full for first pitch on a Friday night against the Yankees most hated rival ...

God, I ####### hate NYS.
   21. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:19 PM (#4457286)
Just being cautiously pessimistic. The Nationals are a .500 team.

Strasburg's fastball command has been off-and-on this month (at least), so if he gets behind a hitter and goes to his fastball it ends up being a walk or a base knock. If he can set up his curveball and especially his changeup he can be devastating, but we just haven't seen that consistently this season.
   22. Petunia inquires about ponies Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:23 PM (#4457287)
Mercadito.

And thank you Ryan! This is EXACTLY what we were looking for. And now we have made reservations. You're tops.

if domonic brown does not walk tonight, he'll be the first person in MLB history to end a month with 10 HRs and 0 BBs.

When the count got to 3-0, I was ready to declare that Dominant Brown took his first walk of the month. Instead he swung, and to Harveys' dismay, hit a 3-run HR, his 11th of the month.
   26. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:37 PM (#4457295)
Better than starting in the 4th or 9th inning ! Go losers !

Heyward catches Span's triple to lead-off. Justin Upton is not a good defensive OF.

   33. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:46 PM (#4457306)
Nationals making rumblings of placing Bryce Harper on the DL (knee/leg)

Meanwhile, Davey keeps running Danny Espinosa out there with his fractured hand and his sizzling 162/194/284 line. He's been a rally-killer even after sitting out for 5 games to "rest" his bone fragments.

There's a grand canyon of difference from Harper down to any other player in the entire organization, but alternatives to Espi would be either a small step down or roughly equivalent in his current condition. So the Nats keep scraping their butts on the road to the World Series.
   34. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:49 PM (#4457307)

   35. Joey B. Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:50 PM (#4457309)
Wow, Strasburg actually looked comfortable on the mound right from the start, and that's pretty damn rare.

Ichi, the thriller!
   37. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 07:53 PM (#4457312)
@Tom_Schad: #Nats Danny Espinosa said his fractured right wrist "feels fine." He no longer hears a clicking sound when swinging.

Yeah, no clicking sound when swinging because his bat never hits the ball.

$5 dollars on single to RF !

Very nice turn of events, so Span can go for the cycle !

The Barves have a gaping hole on the right side of the infield tonight. It might could sink the Titanic.

Got him.

Didn't think so in real time, but slo-mo made the case.

Strasburg freezes Gattis with a NASTY slurveballder (whatever that was).
   48. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:09 PM (#4457331)
Jayson Werth played in his second rehab game yesterday. 2 singles, 6 innings in RF. Probably soon if his hammy doesn't go BOINNNNG! again.

Harper was supposed to be playing tonight in Atlanta, but now they're muttering something about the DL. Jury is still out on him.
   49. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:10 PM (#4457332)

Little Stevie Strasburg surrounded by the Brain Trust in the dugout. Stammen warming in the bullpen.

Werth playing another rehab start at Potomac this evening, earliest they will bring him off DL is Tuesday, per @ZuckermanCSN.

Too hot and humid in Atlanta ! Trade Strasburg to Toronto !

   58. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:20 PM (#4457344)
Umm...how in the world did he apply the tag to Span? He was leaping and dancing just to grab the high throw.
   59. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:21 PM (#4457345)
Harvey's, a chopper, IF error, bloop, broken bat punch job past the IF. Then some hard hit balls. Weird, weird rally.

Delmon Young is just horrible in RF. What was Amaro thinking when he signed him? What does Manuel think when he keeps writing his name in the lineup? He plays deep, so of course he won't get to a bloop. But in the second, he shied away from the wall on a ball that hit about 7' up. If you play that deep, you have to catch those balls.
   60. Joey B. Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:21 PM (#4457346)
Yep, he's done for the day. If he has any kind of remotely serious injury, we can just kiss the season goodbye now.
   61. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:22 PM (#4457347)
This season is gonna keep Nationals Institute of Health blog busy (if it's still in business). Strasburg out, Stammen in. Oy vey!

Thank my stars that Jim dropped off these bottles of wine.

So Strasburg is apparently fragile. I declare him to be the Nick Johnson of starters.
   68. boteman Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:29 PM (#4457356)
If only the Nats still had Gorzelanny. His numbers tell me that the Roenicke is using him as a LOOGY when the guy used to be a starting pitcher. Seems like a waste of materiel to me, but what do I know?
   69. Joey B. Posted: May 31, 2013 at 08:30 PM (#4457358)

Sabathia just struck out the side in the 5th, and passed David Cone on the Yankees K list; he's now at 890 or something.

Also, they showed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the stands, wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers cap. (Well, not in the stands, he was in a luxury box.)

Runners 1st and 2nd for the Yanks.
Youkilis hits one past the 3rd baseman, diving to his left.
Ball bounces to the left fielder, Ichiro scores easily.

David Cone has already referenced Fangraphs & Baseball Reference, and it's only the 6th inning. If the game goes extra innings, he might confess to being a BBTF lurker.

In a situation where staying put would have brought up the Yankees best hitter with 2 runners on, in a situation where he couldn't be pitched around.

Wow, what a terrible play.

Indeed ...
