Aaron Hicks is almost certainly done for the year (shut down for 2 weeks) and may even require TJS.

Yankees better encase GGBG in bubblewrap.

Philles must have a lot of double-headers coming up the last few weeks. :)

NYY v DET PPD.

I assume they'll play 2 tomorrow.

Mets announcer Gary Cohen: "Leading off is Tim LoCastro, a master in getting hit by pitc...... and there's another one."

I think it's 21 HBP in 185 AB. and the 21 is a franchise record, geesh.

anyone think the protective equipment might be getting a little out of hand?

would be fun to have a guy allowed less and less gear for each time he gets hit.

:)

Well, it worked for Rachel Phelps.

Howie, I think the rule should be if you bat with protective gear, you run with it

Wow. Walks three guys in a row, then gets a K and a 5-3 DP.

Zach Eflin matching Dallas Keuchel for 3 innings. 0 hits. 2 walks, 4 Ks

EDIT: Think it’ll last?

NYY v DET PPD.

Old fashioned doubleheader beginning at 1:10. At this point the Yanks are tied with the Twins for the AL home run lead, with 276 each.
   16. Lassus Posted: September 11, 2019 at 08:14 PM (#5878519)
Matz, throw a goddamned strike. You are six runs ahead.

Eflin’s no hitter is gone. 79 pitches in 3.1 innings.

I had such hopes that he could be an average innings eater.

Kind of bizarre seeing the Dodgers losing to the Orioles for even an inning much less five
   20. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: September 11, 2019 at 08:36 PM (#5878524)
Zach Eflin gone after 3.2, 95 pitches, a 3 run HR followed by a walk What a wasted season.

Edit: I missed it, he gave up a single to Keuchel too before he left.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: September 11, 2019 at 08:42 PM (#5878525)
DBacks have a right to be pissed, as they trail 7-0, to be playing #ZombieMets.

Cubs recently got the reanimated version, and that one is woeful.

Mets nearing another dangerous reanimation, though. not sure #liveMets would have enough in them.
   22. Jeremy Renner App is Dead and I killed it Posted: September 11, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5878527)
Counsell goes to the bullpen for reasons and the bullpen gives up 2 dingers and 3 runs and game is tied. And the announcers are second guessing CC on why the bullpen in the 5th inning when Davies was looking ok.

meanwhile the Mets let Matz throw that inning-ending 109th pitch in the 6th of a 7-0 game with 2 on.

Calloway claims he will ride his 5 horses as long as he can - and that works for me.

no Justin Wilson tonight and we'll see on Lugo, and that's the whole bullpen. at least they got 6 gutty innings from Matz, who has turned the corner.
   26. JJ1986 Posted: September 11, 2019 at 09:33 PM (#5878533)
ERA+ is not a great measure for relievers, but the best among the Mets other 10 bullpen arms is Luis Avilan at 89. Only Avilan has a positive WAR and they have 8 relievers with negative WAR.
   27. Ziggy is done with Dominican discotheques Posted: September 11, 2019 at 09:36 PM (#5878535)
This is how scary the Astros are: the A's just intentionally walked a batter to get to a guy with a 670 slugging percentage.

It did work, but holy cow.

This is how scary the Astros are:

The Astros have a collective 120 OPS+, the Yankees are at 119, and the Twins at 118.

The Astros are a cut above, but it's because of their pitching, not their hitting.
   30. bunyon Posted: September 11, 2019 at 10:08 PM (#5878540)
I agree you should have to wear the gear to run but I’d go farther: if a pitch hits you on pads other than the helmet, no base.

Joe managers out Hamels with one out in the 5th, having given up one run, because why wouldn’t you turn it over to such a fresh and reliable bullpen?

F F’ing F’s S.
   37. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: September 11, 2019 at 11:48 PM (#5878551)
####### hell Joe if you're gonna have such a short leash with hamels this inning, ph for him last time through with 2 on.

I will say, hamels really hasn't been that sharp though and not good at all lately so I'm not opposed to pulling him early. Just not after not hitting for him.
   38. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 11, 2019 at 11:50 PM (#5878552)
That too.
   39. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: September 11, 2019 at 11:51 PM (#5878553)
Cards lost and Brewers won. So Cubs better not lose here.
   40. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2019 at 11:53 PM (#5878554)
See, I'm just grateful to avoid another Hamels meltdown tonight. And even on a relatively good night, he's still thrown a million pitches, so it's not like he's exactly fresh and reliable either. The gameplan of "get whatever you can from Hamels and don't push your luck" seems pretty well grounded, IMO.

ETA: Solid point about not hitting for him, though.
   41. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 11, 2019 at 11:58 PM (#5878555)
Hold on, why the heck is Tony Kemp batting lead-off?
   42. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 11, 2019 at 11:59 PM (#5878556)
Fair point, Brian, and I would probably agree if the pen was reliably cromulent. But now they’re playing Bullpen Roulette for 4 2/3, and you know Joe is going to use what, 6 guys for that? One or more of them is going to suck.
   43. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:00 AM (#5878557)

Unless the game is on the line and the pitcher cannot throw strikes. Then he'll stick with him.
   44. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:03 AM (#5878558)
Tell you what, how about at least scoring a run to make this discussion matter?
   45. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:07 AM (#5878560)
Huh. Sonny Gray is gonna get pulled from a no-hit bid, it looks like. He’s at 98 pitches through 6+.
   46. Brian C Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:07 AM (#5878561)
But now they’re playing Bullpen Roulette for 4 2/3, and you know Joe is going to use what, 6 guys for that?

Hamels has an ERA of, what, 7-something since the ASG? I think that's what Len said earlier. Bullpen hasn't been that bad in comparison. And Hamels's been working hard tonight and hasn't been exceptionally sharp. They'd already fired off 4 shots of Starter Roulette and came off pretty clean.

To your point about 6 guys, though, that's probably only one more than he'd have used even if Hamels had gone 6 innings!
   47. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:09 AM (#5878562)
Heh. I was thinking I probably underestimated at 6, but I concede the point.
   48. Brian C Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:15 AM (#5878563)
For as match-uppy as he gets in the late innings, Maddon will let his relievers ride in the middle innings. I feel like my choice would have been Mills over Norwood, but probably splitting hairs.
   49. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:17 AM (#5878564)
....he says as Joe gets match-uppy in the 6th.
   50. Brian C Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:20 AM (#5878565)
2 out, 2 on, 1 run game. That's a high-leverage situation, match-up away. It's not like he's making another change with a 5-run lead in the ninth.
   51. Brian C Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:21 AM (#5878566)
Good lord, the Cubs got Javy'd.

That's all you can do there once you get caught, right? Force a throw and hope for divine intervention?

Rules Q. I assume the batter cant swing at the throw home if the pitcher stepped off? (In this scenario the ball is hittable as opposed to the real play)
   59. Brian C Posted: September 12, 2019 at 12:29 AM (#5878574)
#### it, I'm going to bed.

ETA: I'm sure that's correct, Dale.

I think the ad break between innings was longer than the Top of the 7th.

At least they're getting shutout by a great team.

anyone think the protective equipment might be getting a little out of hand?

What unique piece of equipment is he using that makes him an outlier in the entire history of baseball?

In other words: No.
