HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. TomH Posted: September 14, 2019 at 02:23 PM (#5879122)
odd fact for the day:

The Miami Marlins, with a pitiful record of 51-96, have hit ONE HUNDRED EIGHTTEEN MORE SINGLES than they have allowed.

But when you have a deficit of about 450 extra bases and almost 200 walks, yeah, you're gonna lose a lot of games.

2 HR day for Brett Gardner, the Grittiest Yankee. Also has a double, with 5 RBI. 6-0!
   4. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 04:48 PM (#5879142)
Nico Hoerner with a 3-run homer as the Cubs have hung 13 on the Pirates through 6 innings after pounding out 17 yesterday. Quite a show the last couple days.

Brett Gardner is having himself quite a game.

I should go over to RLYW and laugh at the dopes who always want him off the team.

Gleyber good. HR #37. Please continue to bat him third, no matter who is in the lineup.

"I should go over to RLYW and laugh at the dopes who always want him off the team."

He is vital now. I thought he would be a fourth outfielder. They'll almost certainly resign him, although hopefully to another one-year deal.

Fernando Rodney on in relief of the ineffective Wander Suero and his first pitch apparently hits Charlie Culberson in the face and it doesn't look good so far.

He squared to bunt with runners at 2B, 1B and it either deflected off the bat or just went right into the right side of his face, either his nose or his eye. They are carting him off the field and after the initial shock he looks like it's not as bad as I first thought.

Now Brian Snitker is just lighting up the umpiring staff about something. Sure-fire ejection, but he's getting his money's worth and more.

Groupthink is that Snitker is angry that the pitch that hit Culberson in the face was called a strike. There are more important considerations at this point, but the Braves are on the warpath and it is now 4-1 in their favor.
   11. bunyon Posted: September 14, 2019 at 06:27 PM (#5879157)
That looked bad and I understand why Snitker was hot.

But he didn’t pull the bat back. I’m not sure how you couldn’t call it a strike and I’m sure the ump didn’t enjoy calling it that.

Acuna comes through.
   12. Bote Man sez Deivi is MoY Posted: September 14, 2019 at 06:51 PM (#5879159)
The Nationals simply do not look like a playoff-caliber team right now. That ridiculous 2+ months of .667 ball was unsustainable and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Between the shaky bullpen and the way Martinez manages it I can't see them getting out of the Wild Card game, if they even make it at this point.

They have a losing record against winning teams and that's typically the kind of team they'll face in the post-season, so I'm calling it a season for the Nats right now. Call me Joey, but there's not a lot to stoke my optimism.
   13. bunyon Posted: September 14, 2019 at 06:59 PM (#5879160)
They’ll make it. And then it’s one game.

Winning the next series doesn’t look good.

Yeah, if they hadn't brought him back, the OF would have been a tire fire this year.

It's amazing he can still play a decent CF at age 36.

Gardner has a 40 WAR career. That's pretty impressive

Flaherty getting (relatively) shelled by the Crew, tied 2-2 in the 5th, Brewers on a 2-run homer by Moustakas.

His 9K so far tonight makes him the 8th Cardinals pitcher ever with 200+ Ks, and the 19th time a Cardinals' pitcher has fanned 200 (Gibson 9, Wainwright 3, DeLeon 2, Sam Jones 1, Carlton 1, Chris Carpenter 1, Carlos Martinez 1).

Gary Cohen on SNY giving Callaway a lot of (polite) crap for not PHing for Juan Lagares when Conforto was available.

ugh, flaherty's valiant effort for naught so far ... a mistake pitch to whatsisname early and a lotta pitches in the sixth.

and now the brewers kicking us around in the eighth. dang it.

King Felix was effective tonight - 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 4 Ks. Left with the game tied.

Note that Andy Pettitte, who is at least superficially similar to Sabathia, received less than 10% of the vote on his first ballot- on the one hand, there's an issue with him that (to my knowledge) won't apply with Sabathia, but, at the same time, note that substantial voter churn is expected between now and when Sabathia will be eligible, which won't exactly help his case.

Aaron Judge opposite-field HR. 1-0.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 15, 2019 at 01:43 PM (#5879356)
Marly Rivera, ESPN Writer

Including Aaron Judge's 23rd HR of the year in the 1st inning, the Yankees have hit 32 HR in 14 games in September, the most in the majors (Minnesota has 15 HR in 13 games coming into today). They set an MLB record for a calendar month with 74 HR in August.
Only need 14 more for 300!

Damn. Poor Rizzo. They should just waive the second WC this year. No one wants it.

I don't know if I've ever seen the ball thrown away on a throw over to appeal whether or not the guy had touched the base on the previous play.

If they had ruled that the runner had missed 3B, what the heck would the call have been? There were two outs. Both runs come off the board? Or would Kemp's run still have counted (since the out wasn't recorded at third until after he scored?).
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: September 15, 2019 at 04:06 PM (#5879393)
Cardinal announcers: "Cardinals have allowed the second fewest homeruns in baseball this season. "

Me to myself:...."great now you jinxed it... well there is no such thing as a jinx, I'm just being silly."

Spooneyberger: homerun....

   34. cardsfanboy Posted: September 15, 2019 at 04:22 PM (#5879396)
Cardinals jump back on top with their second hit of the game... in the 7th inning making it 3-2... Dejong two run homer after a four pitch walk.
   35. Brian C Posted: September 15, 2019 at 04:26 PM (#5879400)
Well, however the pros and cons are tallied up for Maddon after this year, no one can say that the Cubs haven't responded this weekend.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: September 15, 2019 at 04:29 PM (#5879402)
Bader with the third Cardinals hit of the day, making it 4-2 as he hit his second homerun of the game.... Finally Jose Martinez gets the Cardinals first non-homerun hit. A pinch hit single and then pulled for a pinch runner.

Davey Martinez has been missing from the Nationals' dugout from about the 7th inning; Chip Hale has been managing the club in his absence. I hope it's nothing medical or some personal crisis, I really just hope at long last they have chosen to #FireDeivi

What were the circumstances?

OK, piecing it together from the play by play, Kemp triples with 2 on 2 out. Presumably it was Heyward who the Pirates thought missed 3B, and threw the ball away on the appeal, allowing Kemp to score. Is that correct? In that case, if the appeal was (eventually) upheld, both Heyward's and Kemp's runs would have been erased. In fact, there is a provision in the rule book to recognize a 4th out, for the purposed of erasing a run. Say Kemp had been thrown out at 3B for the third out. The Pirates could still appeal Heyward missing 3B, and if that had been upheld, then his run would be erased on the 4th out.

Davey Martinez was sent to a hospital for a check-up or IV or something not terrible-sounding. He is expected to manage the Nationals in St. Louis.

Gant was left in way too long, had no control at all today, walked the bases loaded in a one run game in the ninth inning... no reason for him to have faced that last batter, should have been pulled before he even got the strikeout.

Yeah, you nailed the situation and that's exactly what I was wondering, if there was a specific rule that dealt with a situation like this. Similarly, I would then assume that if the lead runner misses a base - any subsequent runs that score would be wiped out as well?

He would have been out either way... the runner had zero chance of scoring on that flyball. A perfect throw wasn't necessary, just a strong throw.

The Brewers' TV scorebug got broken by that review that reverted from "Middle 9th" back to 2 outs, Top 9th. I guess there's no BACK button on their scoring computer so they just took it off the screen until the inning ended. LOLzzz

No, to appeal they had to throw the ball over to third base (where Kemp was stationed) and the pitcher air-mailed it over the third baseman's head, and Kemp scored. He could have walked the ball over to third, but he didn't. Ultimately the appeal was denied.

my girl is smart and knows this but she is making the argument "well he has already hit two in this game, what are the odds he'll hit a third?" and my reply was... "at this point in time, exactly the same as if he had hit zero." (not actually allowing for the difference of the quality of the pitchers that he faced)

She knows this... but still math is fun.

Cubs have now scored in 13 of 16 innings over the last two days.

Just goes to show. Cubs have had trouble scoring runs for long stretches of the past calendar year. Then they come out this weekend with an offensive explosion that blows away anything they've done in my lifetime. You just never know what's going to happen on any given day.

So looking at the last two weeks, the Nationals have a potentially tough schedule with three against the Cardinals, four the with Phillies, and three with the Indians.

Milwaukee has a really soft schedule the rest of the way, with games against the Pirates, Rockies, Padres and Reds.

Cubs and Cardinals have seven games left with each other. I could easily see them beating up on each other and the Brewers slipping past both of them at the finish line.

Should be interesting.

Brewers schedule:

4 against the Padres who are 23-36 since the ASB
3 against the Pirates who are 21-40(!!) since the ASB
3 against the Reds who are 29-34 since the ASB
3 against the Rockies who are who are 21-40 since the ASB including 405 runs given up in those 61 games. WTF?

That is a collective winning pct of .385 which by the standards of athletic competition is kind of not good.

Strasburg, Corbin, Sherzer over the next three days. Cards are gonna have to earn it.

Strasburg should be OK,
Corbin is a coin toss,
Scherzer has been shaky since his back/lat muscle injury and hasn't gone deep in games. His fastball is there, but he was having trouble locating his pitches last couple times out. With the Nats' bullpen and often questionable management of it, a Scherzer start is not a guaranteed win by any stretch right now.
