Nats winning game 1 definitely amps up my excitement. Verlander-Strasburg, oh yeah!!

MLB is not having the best week.
   205. Lassus Posted: October 23, 2019 at 07:54 PM (#5893598)
I am ready!

Although I also may go to bed.

Oh god, more amateur military musicians.

Could have been worse. Straight C.

At +170, Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg is the largest underdog he's ever been in his MLB career tonight against the Astros, per @Bet_Labs.
That seems like an opportunity.

Well, wife missed her connection so I’m off to do a three hour round trip. Hope the game is on Sirius. Enjoy the chat. Try not to have a civil war or yell at any reporters.

That seems like an opportunity.

No doubt. No way Washington should be a 8:5 dog.

I hate these stupid intros.

Verlander freaked.

Aaron presented the award himself to Yelich. So that's pretty cool. Does he do that every year for each winner?

Wow, golf shot

Soto not grabbing his junk like usual at bats
   216. Dale Sams Posted: October 23, 2019 at 08:16 PM (#5893616)
You ever see a pitch and flinch before the batter swings cause it looks like its gonna be annihilated? That was Verlanders first pitch to Soto.

I'm getting a 1990 World Series vibe here.

Eddings? He was the umpire in the AJ game.

Nationals have no f***s to give about being huge dogs.
   220. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2019 at 08:22 PM (#5893620)
Well, Verlander was twice as effective in the first inning here as he was against the Yankees. So there's that.

When did Buzz Aldrin turn into George C Scott??

Verlander recovered really well. Hopefully Strasburg can replicate his LCS performance

When did Buzz Aldrin turn into George C Scott??

Years ago Buzz called into The Howard Stern Show... promoting a timeshare condo investment opportunity. It's a shame the government can't just give seven-figure pensions to everybody who went to the moon.
   225. Jeremy Renner App is Dead and I killed it Posted: October 23, 2019 at 08:26 PM (#5893628)
Kind of amazing that Strasburg stayed healthy and did great in his last season before being a free agent. What great timing!
   226. Bote Man Posted: October 23, 2019 at 08:28 PM (#5893630)
Jayson Stark @jaysonst
An incredible Stephen Strasburg tidbit:

This will be the first time in World Series history that a No. 1 overall pick will start a Series game *for the team that drafted him*!

The others to start - David Price & Mike Moore - started for a different team.
   227. Tony S Posted: October 23, 2019 at 08:29 PM (#5893631)
Dumb decision by Altuve. Seemed prematurely desperate.

Beautiful play. Pointless steal.

Pitchers who when they debuted, you thought "Jesus Christ no one is gonna be able to hit this guys stuff!!..."

Then they got hurt....

Joba Chamberlain....Stephen Strasburg.

yes, that's the price I got.
hit with Max around the same last night, and also have Nats +192 in the Series.

if Nats win tonight, no doubt they'll offer to cash me out at a decent profit.

a good option for people who bet WAY too much, then realize it, and get to land their financial aircraft with no damage and even extra money in the wallet.

cheapskate me would let it ride, though!

UPDATE: clearly jinxed myself

Wow, Turner's finger looks terrible. Like, so swollen he can't effectively pick his nose.
   254. Bote Man Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:18 PM (#5893679)
Doug Eddings is not giving Strasburg the low corners. I don't know much about catcher framing, a lot of people saying Suzuki is jerking the mitt around too much which is throwing off the umpire. Is that A Thing? It looks like he's just not getting borderline strikes called.
   255. Bote Man Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:26 PM (#5893681)
AssCab is playing 2B for his offense, which he seems to have left in D.C. He has great numbers in lots of AB vs Verlander.
   256. Bourbon Samurai stays in the fight Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:28 PM (#5893682)
I did not expect to see an infield hit from Zimmerman
   257. puck Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:28 PM (#5893683)
Verlander's not making web gems with that one.

Rendon is pretty good at baseball. He might earn some $$$ this offseason
   262. Bote Man Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:39 PM (#5893691)
That was a sweet scoop by Rendon just past the 3B and side-arm throw to Zim to get Correa. Shades of early Zim himself.
   263. yo la tengo Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:40 PM (#5893692)
What is the common wisdom about Rendon's future? Any chance the Nats let him go because of money? He'd look good in just about any uniform
   264. Dale Sams Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:44 PM (#5893695)
Kristin....no one who drinks 'sweet tea' pronounces it thus. It's "Swate Tae"
   265. JJ1986 Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5893697)
What is the Angels payroll for next year? They could really use Cole and Rendon (and another starting pitcher).
   266. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:59 PM (#5893702)
The Angels finished the year at $159 million or so. They're going to shed around $40 million.

They need to throw banks at Cole and Strasburg, and Rendon as well. They need everything except a centerfielder.
   267. Bote Man Posted: October 23, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5893705)
Some Nats tweeps were guessing on how much of a premium the World Series brings to teams' coffers. Numbers ranged from $20M to $100M, but that doesn't mean it will find its way to the payroll account. The Nats will make a competitive offer, then when Rendon signs elsewhere they'll declare "we tried" as usual.
   268. vortex of dissipation Posted: October 23, 2019 at 10:11 PM (#5893709)

Jamal Collier @JamalCollier
Strasburg: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K’s on 83 pitches.
Verlander: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 K’s on 86 pitches.

We’re tied at 2 entering the sixth inning.

Astros hitting some pitches hard in the B5.

Couple things I've never got about Infield Fly rule...maybe someone can elucidate. "Runner advance at their own risk"

Could that guy on 2B take off as soon as the IF rule was called? Can he be doubled off? Did he have to go back to the bag to keep from being doubled off?
   278. Tin Angel Posted: October 23, 2019 at 10:40 PM (#5893721)

Like any fly ball, he can't leave the base until the ball is caught. The IF rule isn't calling it an automatic out, it's just announcing the rule is in effect.

I'm just loving that they are letting starters go full tilt. Nice to see JV back out for the 7th even though it'll push him a bit beyond the 100 pitch count.

It actually is. That's the entire point. The runner is not free to advance if the ball is caught, but the batter is out regardless.

I'm just loving that they are letting starters go full tilt.

in 40 or 50 years, the quants running the Yankees will roll over in their fresh graves about Scherzer going 112 pitches in 5 IP and Strasburg 114 in 6 IP on back-to-back nights.
   287. Misirlou gave her his Vincent to ride Posted: October 23, 2019 at 10:50 PM (#5893731)
Like any fly ball, he can't leave the base until the ball is caught.

Pedantry alert: He is free to advance once the ball is touched. If the fielder bobbles the ball for a second or 2, he doesn't have to wait for the actual catch.
   288. Tin Angel Posted: October 23, 2019 at 10:52 PM (#5893733)
I was expecting the pedantry to be that technically the runner can advance whenever he wants, provided he doesn't mind getting doubled off once the ball is caught.
   289. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 23, 2019 at 10:55 PM (#5893735)
