HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE THIS WEEKEND?!
   2. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 02:19 PM (#5845590)
HOW MANY ERRORS WILL THE NATIONALS COMMIT TODAY??

One might be on the Front Office: they optioned RHP Joe Ross to AAA Fresno to call up from AA Harrisburg...RHP James Borque.

Now you might think the obvious quip is
alt.swedish.chef.borque.borque.borque
but you would be wrong. It's his porn stache. They say his surname is pronounced "bor-kay" which takes all the fun out of it. I can't find him on B-Ref to read what their pronunciation guide says.

Davey Martinez has shown a tendency to cotton to whichever pitcher last threw a clean outing (not even an inning), immediately crowning him The Stopper until he gets overused and falters. I fully expect Borque to be his next victim:

Bourque, 25, went 3-0 with six saves and a 1.33 ERA (3 ER/20.1 IP) in 14 appearances out of Harrisburg’s bullpen in 2019. He struck out 33 batters while issuing just six walks.

That's all it takes! Until even the AAA bats of the Marlins readjust his calculus. Let's watch on hidden camera to see how it turns out...

Only got to see a couple innings of Darvish, but his stuff looked really "crisp."
   4. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 03:34 PM (#5845596)
Pat Hughes doing his Everyman impression, exclaiming how he had no idea what Coomer meant by 63% humidity. An inning later he's commenting on those "harmless cumulus clouds". And fans, don't forget that this broadcast is brought to you by Amazon AWS Cloud Services!

i'm with post 1... how will the cardinals lose today... uggh, this team has looked so crappy the last few days... and by crappy I really mean "mediocre" they aren't doing anything massively wrong, they just aren't doing anything right, it's like they just don't ####### care.

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
Brandon Nimmo's injury is not merely neck inflammation, as the Mets announced. He's recovering from a bulging disc, and whiplash:

Man, never mind about Darvish. He sucks.

Dusty ruins another Cubs pitcher. SHEEEESH!
   11. Howie Menckel Posted: May 25, 2019 at 04:41 PM (#5845609)
Mets expected later today to announce the signing of Todd Hollandsworth to join Rajai Davis, Carlos Gomez, and Aaron Altherr in their outfield.
   12. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 04:42 PM (#5845610)
Noted rookie Victor Robles hits a bounding ball through the hole at 2B, takes his sweet time trotting down to 1B, then when he sees Cooper taking his sweet time fielding the ball Robles turns on the afterburners and juuuuuuuust beats the throw to 2B. I figured Mattingly would challenge and win, but he did not challenge so it's a double to lead off the Nats 3rd inning.
   13. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 25, 2019 at 04:53 PM (#5845611)
I guess Joe figured he'd let Darvish blow his own potential win rather than the pen.
   14. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 05:03 PM (#5845612)
The Nats have hit into double plays in each of the first 3 innings today. In the 4th Rendon hit a dying quail into LCF so Adam Eaton, not content with that total, rounded 2B too far, then slammed on the brakes. But it was too late and he was tagged out halfway. At least Rendon made it to 2B safely, thus foiling Eaton's evil plans. Fundamentals.
   15. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 05:16 PM (#5845614)
Robles squared to bunt, but the pitch sails in high and tight, he drops to the dirt and the home plate umpire IMMEDIATELY signals for the trainer as Robles grasps the right side of his face. Thinking the worst, he then stands up apparently no worse for the wear and takes 1B. He later came around to score on an almost-excuse-me base hit by Gomes that cleared the bases. 5-0 Nats in the 4th. Weird game.
   16. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 05:33 PM (#5845616)
Dan Kolko @masnKolko
Juan Soto was hitting .228 before his now nine-game hitting streak. His 2-for-3 so far today has him up to .288. He’s seeing the ball huge. Hitting to all fields. It’s 2018 all over again.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: May 25, 2019 at 05:45 PM (#5845617)

so you went to a baseball game, and a soccer game broke out
   18. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 05:57 PM (#5845618)
It wouldn't surprise me if Robles was doing his best soccer "act".
   19. Bote Man Posted: May 25, 2019 at 06:31 PM (#5845619)
Mark it: Patrick Corbin with the 4-hit shutout, mostly because nobody trusts the Nats bullpen these days. Of course, it came against the Marlins so there's that. 5-0 F
   20. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 25, 2019 at 06:33 PM (#5845620)
They announced the starting time of game 2 of the Yanks-KC as 6:30 at the end of the 1st game telecast, but the MLB website has it at 8:15 EDT and the Fios program guide has it at 7:15 EDT. I blame the Deep State.

I can't wait to see what Tigers social media says about this game. They're a lot of fun, definitely more fun than the team.

Phillies over Milwaukee 7-2. Tomorrow's the last of 17 straight days they'll have played in a row. They're currently 10-6.

Not until just now, and thanks for the note, even though the main article is behind the WSJ payroll. All of a sudden I'm a Sean Doolittle fan.

Matz pinch running in the 11th inning as the Mets bench is empty. Dominic Smith singled him to 2B. It seems their rag-tag call-ups and acquisitions are mostly working out, whereas the Nats can't even get their regulars to straighten up and play right.
   27. Howie Menckel Posted: May 25, 2019 at 07:49 PM (#5845631)
wow, the Mets ARE still playing!

4-4, bottom 11, bags loaded, one out, 3-1 count and.... 3-2. and whiff by Aaron Altherr.
here comes Hechevarria, and he works it to 3-2 - and grounds out. more baseball.

top 12, bags loaded, one out and... a whiff.
here comes next Tiger, and HE works it to 3-2 and - foul. then flyout, half inning over.

both teams now out of position players on bench.
   28. Howie Menckel Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:04 PM (#5845634)
doh
   29. Howie Menckel Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:05 PM (#5845635)
Mets announcers estimate Juan Lagares has tried to bunt his way on base "100 times" in his 7 years - "and he's been successful maybe once."

it's a running gag - he tries the bunt, usually it goes foul, but either way they say, "that never works."

I will never complain about the Cardinal announcers again... these guys on fox sound like they are sleeping and someone nudges them every few seconds to say something....

I get that national announcers can't be homers or anything, but my god, at least act like you care about the game going on... these idiots are sleepwalking during the broadcast.
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:16 PM (#5845637)
note: I lied in the first sentence above... of course I'm going to continue to complain about the Cardinals announcers.... but compared to this garbage, they actually are watching a game that they clearly enjoy.... these guys are just not interested in the slightest at being at the game they are covering.
   32. Howie Menckel Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:23 PM (#5845638)
Tomas Nido HRs to end it, as we all knew he would.

Mets win 5-4 in 13 innings on 3 HR and 5 RBI by their two catchers.

He got a nice piece of it, but I didn't think it was gone off the bat, because it's Tomas Nido.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:33 PM (#5845642)
Yadier tried to be aggressive in a situation in which it was a dead ball, but it was a nice potential play...

these guys who are announcing and that seem to have zero emotions at all... are talking about Yadier's legs and wondering what they might be saying to his aggressive running technique.... and I'm like "you mean... Yadier Molina, the national league leader in steals for catchers this season with four?"

   36. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5845644)
I just don't get the feeling that these announcers want to be at a baseball game.. mind you... I think if they were at a strip club that gave away free lap dances, that these guys would show about as about as emotion as data from star trek.
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:48 PM (#5845645)
Memorial Day again ?! Jesus, how time flies !

First post I made on facebook today was "memorial day is about those who gave their lives, it's not veteran's day."

annually this is a point I try to make... I'm a veteran.. this day has absolutely zero to do with me. The fact that they are pushing this bogus ass holiday called military appreciation day at the same time is utterly ridiculous and reduces the point of this holiday.
   38. phredbird Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:51 PM (#5845646)

cfb, i was about to type something along the lines of how utterly bored and disillusioned i am with this game and this team right now, and your comment about the fox guys only added to my ennui. you're right. they are the soggy cornflakes of sportscasters.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:55 PM (#5845647)
i agree about the team though... they just don't seem to care one bit right now either. I made that comment on facebook the other day...

this team is just boring... no passion, no care in the world etc... it's hard to watch them right now.
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:56 PM (#5845648)
outside of maybe Jose "professional hitter" Martinez... and maybe Waino... nobody else seems to care... and the coaching staff is the most non-descript collection of nobodies in the history of anything.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 08:57 PM (#5845649)
this has to be how A's fans feel... a collection of players/staff that can be good or bad, but are just not fun to watch.

well that kinda suck... the braves apparently own the Cardinals this year.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: May 25, 2019 at 09:06 PM (#5845656)
omg... kill this ####### announcer... he's trying to praise and insult albies at the same time... if he was a white player... I'm sure the comment would have been limited to "he hit the ball, put his head down and ran"... but being non-white... we get "he put his head down and ran... and maybe he should have glanced up a bit to see the play happening."

Yes, Karros's voice seemed to be slightly muffled by his hood as he pointed out that when a play is unfolding in front of you, you might be advised to actually pay attention so that you can take the extra base when the defense kicks the ball.

honestly... most st louis fans want to get at least one win in the series... the series is different.. but being in three finals and having never won even one game is a pretty big stigma... to have it happen a fourth time would be bad...

At the same time... Boston has beaten us 7 out of 10 times in the finals of the four major sports.... Celtics beat the Hawks 3 out of four.... Cardinals and Red Sox are tied at 2-2..... then you add the patriots 1-0 and the Bruins 1-0 against the Blues...

It's time to move the needle more to the center.

This is the 2nd game in Mets history where they've gotten 3 HR from the catcher position.

The other was September 3, 1985, when Gary Carter hit 3 HR against the Padres.

Strange that the Baseball Gods have allowed the Angels to suffer so much of late.

EDIT: The mericiful Baseball Gods decline to punish the Angels, who coughed up the lead in the top of the 9th, for running through a stop sign on a gappper that ties the game at 2 in the bottom of the inning.

I know the post was ages ago but most of the games will be over by the time I wake up tomorrow so

for the record ... I have no idea how many bunts have gone foul but Juan Lagares has 52 fair bunts in his career, good for 16 sacs, 18 hits and 18 non-sacrificing outs (and no DPs). Assuming he was intending to sacrifice on those 16 I'd say that's pretty darn successful.

What is a 2424 game?

They announced the starting time of game 2 of the Yanks-KC as 6:30 at the end of the 1st game telecast, but the MLB website has it at 8:15 EDT and the Fios program guide has it at 7:15 EDT. I blame the Deep State.

"Deep State" season 2 episodes 1-4 broadcast starting at 8 pm tonight on Epix

Grounder to second base in Toronto, and it's bobbled - but wait, the 'runner' is still out by 3-4 steps! rhymes with "Lanny Lachado."

Bote, 2 AB, 4 runs, 2 hits, 4 RBIs. BDC did an ongoing analysis of the different combinations. It was quite fascinating.

Man, that BDC really needs to keep cool. He is wayyyyyy overthinking this stuff.
