Mets did some real Mets baserunning to end a runners on 1st & 2nd, 1-out threat by a WP strikeout double-play.

Domingo Germán unblemished through 4 innings for the NYY, with 4-0 lead over the Orioles. Still has a 0.00 ERA for the season over 9 innings.

It would be nice if the Cubs didn't give up first-inning home runs in all 162 games this year.

Reds-Pirates altercation leads to 3 ejections -BBTF fave Puig, Kela, and someone else

more than a kerfuffle, probably something in between a brouhaha and a donnybrook.

Future first ballot HOFer Derek Dietrich admired his homer from the batter's box, because when you have talent like that - well, you wind up in awe of yourself. plus being on a losing team in early April, the stakes are so high.

Chris Archer appeared to not enjoy Dietrich's impudence, given his next plate appearance.

[108] a rhubarb?

rhubarb - that might be it. not sure of the exact pecking order

to paraphase Seinfeld, I think it's a donnybrook when a nipple makes its first appearance. or is it a decked coach? I forget.

can anyone rank a top 10 out of these options? #crowdsourcing

And yet somehow they didn't eject Archer, the guy who intentionally threw at the batter, and left him in to continue accumulating points against my fantasy team. Bastards.

Mets have walked 11 batters, and are only trailing 7-1 with 2 outs in the 6th.

EDIT: Based loaded BB makes it 8-1. 9 of the last 13 Nationals batters have walked. Citi Field crowd seems a bit irked.

EDIT II: Suzuki single makes it 9-1, bases still loaded.

it's Jacob deGrom Cy Young Bobblehead Day, no kidding - though he's not pitching. at least fans can get a "refund" for the ticket by selling the b-head on ebay.

(I went to a Devils hockey game in March. ticket cost $35, and the free "David Puddy from Seinfeld Bobblehead" is still selling for more than $100 on ebay. it's a good one, too)

You may know that coming up with and discussing such a ranking (in terms of "seriousness") is a staple on the Dan LeBatard Show. One of my guilty pleasures.

Their number one item is "Malice in the Palace".

I don't really agree with pulling Hendricks here. The homer aside, I think he's looked OK today, with a lot of weak contact that just turned into hits. I don't think burning a pinch-hitter with one on/one out is enough of an advantage to make up for putting in what is likely to be a worse pitcher.

3 dinger day for Sanchez!
   121. Brian C Posted: April 07, 2019 at 03:42 PM (#5829397)
I also don't think Kris Bryant looks fixed. He had the homer in the first game but otherwise has been lifting weak fly balls all over the place. Just no power. Worrying.

it's Jacob deGrom Cy Young Bobblehead Day, no kidding - though he's not pitching.

If the Mets employed anyone with a modicum of foresight, he would have been.

Simply by letting deGrom take his normal turn through his first six starts, he'd have pitched in each of the five series against presumptive NL East contenders (WAS x 2, ATL, PHI x 2), which, y'know, seems like it'd be the kind of advantage a well-managed club would pursue.

Instead, his second start was pushed back to Wednesday -- because, hey, you can't bypass the opportunity to pitch Vargas -- making him a no-go for today. Tomorrow off and more absurd deference to Vargas was going to have him wait a full week for his third start, which was going to result in him missing next weekend's Atlanta series. He's now scheduled for Tuesday, making him available Sunday. He'll consequently miss the first Philadelphia tilt, and if Vargas is allowed to start the first game against St. Louis after a day off, you can also cross off the second Philadelphia series.

While I'm critiquing the Met rotation... The original intention to let Vargas take his second turn caused Matz and Wheeler to be flipped "to separate the lefties," and Wheeler came out today having not pitched in a week and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Number one, that goal could've been achieved by having Matz ahead of Wheeler in the first place. What, this need was so pressing it only occurred to anyone after the first time through the rotation? And the stated purpose was rendered void by the belated decision to skip Vargas after all. Did I say something about lack of foresight?

I wondered why Scherzer was left in to start the seventh of a 12-1 game. The universe has quickly answered, "Washington bullpen, dummy."
   126. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 07, 2019 at 04:09 PM (#5829403)
6 Yankee HRs today. Good thing the Orioles didn’t start Pedro Severino at Catcher - he showed up the Orioles pitchers on all 3 Yankee HRs yesterday, reacting in disgust as the bat hit the ball. Can’t remember seeing anything quite like that before.
   127. Howie Menckel Posted: April 07, 2019 at 04:18 PM (#5829404)
Nationals lead 12-6 in the 8th - the inning where they have allowed 17 of their 40 runs against entering the game. (in this game, Grace allowed 2 inherited runners to score in the 7th and allowed two more of his own).

Rosenthal enters, and HBP gives him a perfect 8-for-8 in batters reaching base against him this year. and there's a wild pitch, runner advances to second. and a wild pitch to 3rd.

a walk, and now 1st and 3rd no out. here comes Wander Suero.
3-0 on Rosario.... this is hilarious.
ah, Rosario whiffed.
Broxton, too.
and Nimmo - MLB's leading whiff machine so far this season - well, he flied out.

oh well.
   128. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: April 07, 2019 at 04:18 PM (#5829405)
Rosenthal hits the first batter he faces, then throws wild pitches to send him to second and third in the process of issuing a four-pitch walk to the second. Nine batters faced and still no outs recorded, and he's done for the day.

LOVE the astros stirrups today
everyone but the catcher is wearing em

bottom of the 6th and 2:30 already. at least not many Ks and there have been lots of baserunners and runs and astros are getting beat by ex-stro robbie grossman

Joe Ross - recalled today - on in the 9th for the Nationals to (maybe) close out a 12-6 lead.

- plunks McNeil on a 3-2 pitch as 4th Met to be plunked today (ties a club record)
- nearly plunks Alonso (2B in 7th, HR in 8th) on first pitch
- walks Alonso
- 2-0 to d'Arnaud, now 3-2... and he hits one to the CF fence but it's caught, runners advance
- and there's a 3-run HR and it's 12-9!

Sean Doolittle, a legit MLB pitcher, comes in a no-SV situation

lol

1-2-3 and it's over

   135. Jay Seaver Posted: April 07, 2019 at 04:46 PM (#5829416)
I usually say I like that the AL and NL have slightly different rules, but then I watch a pitcher trying to bunt with two strikes in an interleague game and I realize pitchers hitting is garbage.

And to 134, I've got to think the Red Sox have got to consider answering "Eduardo 'walks guys after getting them down 0-2' Rodriguez" to that question.

Alex Avila injured on home run trot:
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed catcher Alex Avila on the injured list with a strained left quadriceps, an injury suffered while circling the bases on a home run. … "He was gearing up to get to second base, and when he saw it went over the fence he kind of geared down and felt it grab," manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday. "We don't think it is going to be anything that is too lengthy."

Red Sox win 1-0. It was a bullpen game for them. Since the SP has been atrocious thus far, this now actually makes sense that they would win this game 1-0.

Five homers for Mike Trout in this four-gamer against Texas, with a homer every game. Nice

Indeed. Some historical perspective:
David Schoenfield, ESPN Senior Writer

More on Trout, from ESPN Stats & Info: Trout just had one of the best series by anyone, ever. He was 6-for-11 with five HRs and six walks -- contributing to a 2.631 OPS, the third-highest by anyone in a four-game series in MLB history (min. 15 PA).

The highest ever was 3.111 by Babe Ruth in June of 1921 against the Tigers. He was 8-for-12 with six HRs and six walks in that series at the Polo Grounds. He also started and won a game on the mound in that series, striking out Ty Cobb.

The second-highest OPS ever was 2.850 by Mickey Mantle in July of 1962 against the A's, as he launched five HRs and walked six times.

Rather exclusive company.

Too bad he's not getting any help. Angel batters other than Mike Trout: 192/256/271.

He's driven in 37.5% of the team's runs, which would be some kind of record if it continues. Being an on-base guy with good speed Trout has never had a problem scoring runs, but this year only has 6 - and just one of those being driven in by someone other than Mike Trout.

You could take the Dodgers’ team batting line and sneak it into the middle of Chipper Jones’ career and it wouldn’t stand out.
