HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

This weekend's games are "The Bride of Frankenstein": a black-and-white horror show.
   3. phredbird Posted: August 24, 2019 at 02:40 PM (#5874096)

the fun uniform haters have been pretty vocal here, i wonder if it's the majority opinion.

just for funsies, would posters this weekend mind casting a vote?

i'm not a fan of the unis, they just look too weird. but i am in favor of the nicknames.
   4. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 02:49 PM (#5874098)
Harold Reynolds and Jim Thome are doing an entire anti-launch angle segment based around Charlie Manuel drills to hit line drives up the middle. FFS.

i am in favor of the nicknames.
I think there needs to be some sort of central authority that assigns a player a decent nickname if his own choice is too lame. “Victor Robles wants to use ‘Vic?’ No, he shall be called ‘Tater.’”

Why the hell is Jim Thome against launch angles?! His swing was consistently among the most extreme in his era.

the fun uniform haters have been pretty vocal here

Just because we don't exhaust ourselves spouting effusive praise doesn't make us "haters". It's a shame that society has been reduced to binary choices for everything. I'm not a fashion critic; in fact, I think we place entirely too much emphasis on clothing as it is. I really DGAS.

But consider:
These black uniforms look like no fun at all for the teams wearing them in sweltering August heat. The black uniforms look indistinguishable from the black umpire outfit on TV.

The white uniforms make it difficult to read the nicknames and numbers.

I fail to see how fans (customers) are well served by these uniform choices? Are we *required* to love them because we're told that they're fun??
   8. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 24, 2019 at 03:09 PM (#5874105)
Anthony Rizzo has had a rough 3 innings defensively for the Cubs.

I’m not in favor of the unis. It’s not a good look, but the difficulty deciphering nicknames & numbers is a greater problem.

Because “line drives give you consistency,” that’s why.
   10. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 03:11 PM (#5874107)
The Cubs game is in the top of the third, and we’ve already seen a half dozen pickoff throws where the runner was within two steps of the base. Knock it off.
   11. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 24, 2019 at 03:15 PM (#5874108)
The awful uniforms appear to have confused the Cubs, because they're playing this series like they're on the road.
   12. Esoteric Posted: August 24, 2019 at 03:18 PM (#5874109)
Will the Nationals ever stop scoring runs?

You better watch this manufactured fun and you better like it!

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
It appears Mets catcher Tomas Nido, who was hit on the helmet with a Josh Donaldson backswing last night, is going on the injured list. Rene Rivera has locker here at Citi Field. The Mets are saying Rene Rivera is here officially on the taxi squad. He's not active yet. The team has not determined if Nido will go on the 7-day concussion IL, the 10-day general IL or nothing at all.

This looked pretty concerning when it happened. I hope Nido doesn't suffer any long-term effects from this.
   16. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:06 PM (#5874122)
The home plate ump at Wrigley has been just atrocious. And that last BS call on Happ might have ended the season for my fantasy team. His sh!ttiness is literally costing me money.
   17. Where have you gone Brady Anderson? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:13 PM (#5874125)
I definitely vote no on these uniforms. The black ones look okay, not good, but okay. The white ones are terrible. Part of the whole schtick for players weekend is putting dumb nicknames on the jerseys. Then why would you pick uniforms that make it almost impossible to read any writing? Maybe MLB is passive aggressively trying to sabotage players weekend so they can get rid of it.
   18. Meatwad Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:13 PM (#5874126)
So thats why happ was ejected came here to ask why.

What are they doing, spinning the Mets Magical Injury Wheel? Seems like an immediate medical evaluation would have produced results by now.
   20. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:19 PM (#5874128)
Two outs, bases loaded, 3-2 count. Happ got rung up on a pitch that was at least three inches outside. Disgraceful.
   21. Bote Man Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:26 PM (#5874129)
Anthony Rizzo left with "middle back tightness".
   22. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:27 PM (#5874130)
Jonathan Lucroy is pinch-hitting for Anthony Rizzo in the 5th inning. Rizzo left the game with mid-back tightness, per Cubs.

That might explain the shitty defense.

Q wasn't good, but he also wasn't bad just unlucky. He wasn't hit hard at all. But 3rd game in a row the offense is in hiding.
   23. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:34 PM (#5874131)
Just utter ####### failure with runners in scoring position.
   24. Bote Man Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:36 PM (#5874133)
Well, even a Nats beat writer tweeted a graphic that showed that strike 3 to Happ about 1-1/2 ball's widths outside, so he was justified in b|tching about it. Bases loaded, the Nats got a huge break there.
   25. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:40 PM (#5874135)
Is there any discipline for an ump who makes such a terrible call in a key situation? And then ejects the player who is completely right to be pissed off?
   26. Bote Man Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:49 PM (#5874136)
Cervelli is batting 7th and playing catcher for the Braves tonight. Go figure.
   27. Bote Man Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:50 PM (#5874137)

Angel Hernandez still has a job, so I would say...no.
   28. Rob_Wood Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:53 PM (#5874138)
You guys have seen baseball games before, right?

Bad ball/strike calls have been part of baseball for at least, um, 150 years.

If that's how you want to post in a GameDay chat thread, I guess that is your right.

But nobody else likes reading about it. And I am a Cubs fan.

(And that goes double for pace-of-play complaints.)
   29. KB JBAR (trhn) Posted: August 24, 2019 at 04:55 PM (#5874140)
You know when you’re using the fill paint can in a graphics editing program and the tolerance is set too high so everything gets filled the same color? That’s what these uniforms look like.
   30. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 24, 2019 at 05:15 PM (#5874144)
Aaron Judge is heating up, HR to CF. Yankees still trail 2-1, but tie MLB record for most HRs in a month (58).

As opposed to posts telling other people what they should and shouldn’t post about. People love reading those. Do you give the people sitting near you at a game a list of topics not to discuss too?
   32. bunyon Posted: August 24, 2019 at 06:40 PM (#5874154)
I’m not wild about the unis but it’s a weekend.

The whites would be ok if the lettering had better borders.

I don’t really get why they’re fun. They’re black and white.

Fluorescents would have been better.
   33. rconn23 Posted: August 24, 2019 at 06:45 PM (#5874155)
Bad, bad day for the Yankees offense. They really need a few more of their regulars to return. No way they should have lost this one.

I've admitted that I don't rank in the top 100 (1000?) of loyal fans here, and am shamelessly on the Mets bandwagon since the All-Star break.

but I did go to last night's game, and stuck it out through all 14 innings (of a gut-wrenching 2-1 loss). got to the car at midnight, ending an 8-hour visit. since I drive, usually by the 8th inning or so my buddy says, "so, we can leave anytime you like," just being considerate.

last night - I never got the 'call to the bullpen.' crowd was raucous, deGrom's 8 K in a row and then a game-tying, opposite field HR were energizing.

this is the guy that called me with his extra ticket to Game 7 of the 1986 World Series at Shea, no kidding. I'll owe him for another 100 years.

:)

P.S. The giveaway was clever, a t-shirt that had a shot of Alonso - with his shadow looking like his Polar Bear nickname.

tucked the shirt under the seat - but I was sitting in the last row of a section so "under" meant at concourse level. sometime around the 7th inning, some dirty bastard must have stolen the shirt. easy to do, since people could and did stand right behind us at times. easy enough to casually reach down as if tying one's shoe.

I mean, I was never gonna wear it anyway. but pardon me if I enjoy picturing a little karma coming around to bite this loser on the ass down the road.

NL playoff chances, per Fangraphs:
Nationals 82.6%
Cubs 68.9%
Cardinals 63.9%
Mets 37.8%
Brewers 22.7%
Phillies 8.9%

Braves win over Mets.
Phillies lose to Marlins.
Nationals allowed a solo circuit clout to Russell to tie it up 1-1 in the 5th.

This has been your NL East update.

Bases loaded, two outs full count to Fowler, and he takes a pitch, that was a ball, and it was called a ball, but man, that was a pitch that I don't think any batter takes in that situation, and if they do, it's almost never called a ball... roughly thigh high fastball, 2 inches inside.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: August 25, 2019 at 05:45 PM (#5874308)
not sure how Fowler doesn't score on that double by Edman...

Manuel Margot doubles down the left field line, thinking about maybe going for three He takes a big turn and his shoe comes off and he falls down. Then he gets up and tries to go back to second and slips and falls on his face and gets tagged out.
   51. phredbird Posted: August 25, 2019 at 05:53 PM (#5874310)

i'm also surprised dan and jim didn't say anything, unless i missed it.
   52. phredbird Posted: August 25, 2019 at 05:56 PM (#5874311)

anybody who hates the current TTO environment should be watching this game. cards are spraying hits all over the park, scoring runs. no homers so far.
   53. phredbird Posted: August 25, 2019 at 06:05 PM (#5874314)

wacha up to 60 pitches in the third ... this after the rockies threw 55 pitches in the second alone ... so maybe i'm wrong, this is going to be a long game of take take take, swing hard ...

and wacha walks the batter after a strikeout. here comes pitch no. 70

Going to extras in Wrigley, despite an unjust 2-out Cubs walk on strike 3 before the 3rd out. Nationals bullpen doesn’t inspire confidence is such circumstances.

the fun uniform haters have been pretty vocal here, i wonder if it's the majority opinion.

The in game poll question on the Red Sox game last night (sponsered by Dunkins, the official coffee of the Boston Red Sox!) was “do you like the uniforms this weekend?” It ran 77-23 against. I think the uniforms are generally disliked. I don’t recall anywhere near this level of dislike the last two years. I think they are just bad uniforms.

just for funsies, would posters this weekend mind casting a vote?

I’m a middle aged white guy so I don’t love the uniforms or nicknames. I don’t hate it or anything I just tend to the traditional. The nicknames would be fine if there were more good ones. Brock “BH” Holt or Matt “Barnsey” Barnes seem to be representative of too many nicknames. Like I said to a friend last night, the biggest thing we’ve learned this weekend is how unimaginative MLB players are.

I do get a kick out of stuff like Hunter Pence using the shrug emoji and Brad Boxberger last y ear using the symbols for Box and Burger. Of course if more players did it I probably wouldn’t like it as much simply because it was too standard.
   58. phredbird Posted: August 25, 2019 at 07:08 PM (#5874324)

that's pretty much my take.

the white uniforms i dislike much more than the black. it's hard to read the names.

i know the cards bullpen can make things interesting, but we do have a 7-run lead. i've switched over to the dodgers game.

dave roberts' nickname on his uni is 'doc'.

that's the kind of nickname i like, i think it goes back to his playing days.

clayton kershaw's nickname is 'kersh' ... wut?

now there's a fire in eagle rock, which is just north of dodger stadium. you can see the smoke starting to creep toward the stadium. if it's thick enough to suspend the game, i wonder if that's the first time ever. it's not out yet, it's jumped the 134 freeway near where it intersects with the 2.

I dislike the white uniforms, along with pretty much every person on the planet with eyes who are watching the game more than 100 feet away from the action(supposedly the white uniforms don't look bad up close)

I love players weekend... I think it's a great thing etc... the fact that the players negotiated it in the cba alone means it means something to them. I want to see more of the custom bats and shoes though... and the nicknames are also great... but there have been some great custom bats, that it's has a true potential of being a money maker going forward...either for charity or for collector sales.
   70. phredbird Posted: August 25, 2019 at 08:00 PM (#5874342)

actually the smoke seems to be drifting east but you can definitely see it from the stadium over the left field pavilion

   75. phredbird Posted: August 25, 2019 at 09:33 PM (#5874357)

stupid news copters have been looking at the fire from an angle i couldn't figure out. the fire is in the northeast corner of the intersection of the 2 and the 134, with the smoke drifting north, away from the stadium. and it's mostly being controlled, just a lot of smoke.
   76. Bote Man Posted: August 25, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5874364)
The Nationals have gone 12-2 recently and have gained a whopping half game on the Braves.
   77. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 25, 2019 at 10:23 PM (#5874366)
The Nationals trail the Braves by 6 games, but 7 head-to-head games remain, so they have a chance to take care of things themselves, although I’m sure they’d appreciate a little help.

Thing is, I've driven that intersection a couple of thousand times in my life.

Lived in Echo Park, Highland Park and Pasadena.

It's no surprise with the rain earlier this year it could/would/should happen, but without significant wind? In *that* location?

Not really worried.

Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank?

They've got stupid resources to throw at this thing.
