Some days no Omnichatter, other days multiple Omnichatters? That never happened when the Primer Chimp ran things around here! Or did it?

Seems like one of those classic Wild West days at Wrigley. I don't think six runs will win this.

Turns out that it was enough. Plus some Javy magic in the 9th.

Alonso, who broke Strawberry's Mets rookie HR record a month ago, breaks his RBI mark here in July.

Mets announcer today claimed Derek Holland's nickname is "Dutch Oven."
turns out to be true - and that there also is such a traditional method of cooking.

I wonder if Holland is an aficionado of cornhole as well.

Rockies starters have now allowed 71 runs in 67 innings in July. There have actually been at least a couple quality starts in there, too. (67 runs in the other 54 innings.)

The Drake - everybody loves The Drake!

so much so that last year, The Drake became the first to play for 5 MLB teams in the same season - the Brewers, Indians, Angels, Blue Jays, and Twins.

in the last 2+ years, he has been traded, purchased twice, and claimed on waiver five times.

100 career ERA+

The Mets celebrated Walker Lockett's first major league win with what he called "a pretty eventful shower."

They put him in a laundry cart, wheeled him into the shower and doused him with beer, shaving cream, ketchup, mayonnaise and "maybe baby powder," Pete Alonso said.

A's won a thriller, coming out ahead in a 5-4 tilt at Minnesota that went 0-2 through 6 innings, then 3-2, 3-4, 5-4.
Khris Davis's 2-run, 2-out single in the 9th was the difference - a line drive to right deflected by Twins first baseman Adrianza.
The Twins loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 9th, but Oakland turned a crisp 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Presumptive AL MVP Matt Chapman was held hitless in his first start back from injury, but drew a walk that inspired his teammates, probably, and made a typically excellent play to save a run - and, it turned out, the game - in the bottom of the 8th.

The A's are now 15 games over .500 for the first time this season, and effectively tied with Cleveland (.001 behind) for the top WC spot.
   23. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 21, 2019 at 11:48 AM (#5863582)
The Rockies DFA'd Mark Reynolds this morning, almost certainly ending his career. He was dreadful this year, a first baseman/DH with a 46 OPS+ and twice as many strikeouts as hits. He hit his last major league homer on May 10; since then he has hit .147/.253/.206, with 29 Ks and ten hits. His final game was as a DH against the Yankees on Friday, and in that game he struck out, struck out, struck out, and fouled out to the first baseman, in that order.

Reynolds had a reputation as a slugger, but because his batting averages were always so low, he only slugged .500 once in his career, and that was ten years ago. He leaves with not only the record for strikeouts in a season, at 223, but four of the top 20 all-time figures. He was the first man to strike out 200 times in a season, and is the only man to ever strike out 200 times in three different seasons, and he added a 196 as well.

He seemed like a pretty good dude, but I won't miss him at all.

He seemed like a pretty good dude, but I won't miss him at all.

I won't miss Reynolds but I feel bad for him since this is the end.

However, the move was long overdue and an excellent example of the many roster spots the Rockies give away year after year. These back up guys accumulate PA's and it ends up adding up and negating Arenado and Story, or Tulo and Cargo before them.

Walt had noted that somehow the Rockies are 2 runs below league avg at the pinch hitter spot alone. Reynolds played a big part there by going 2 for 38.

The fans and press constantly harp on the pitching and with this recent swoon, the pitching really is blowing up. But when you keep going into the season projected to be below league average at the plate, and then perform that way, you have to try to fix these replacement level spots in your lineup and bench. Instead, Bridich signs replacement level guys like Parra and Desmond.

   26. puck Posted: July 21, 2019 at 12:20 PM (#5863586)
They also sent Senzatela down, who has been a big part of the starting pitching implosion, and called up Jeff Hoffman.

I'm not expecting much out of Hoffman. Senzatela at least pitches well at times. I was surprised to see he has as many quality starts as German Marquez, and is 2nd on the team.

Oontz returns the favor against Marquez in the bottom half.
   28. Howie Menckel Posted: July 21, 2019 at 02:02 PM (#5863594)
Desmond's OPS+s by month have been .604, 1.027, .946, and so far .652

overall OPS+ is 93
   29. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 21, 2019 at 02:09 PM (#5863596)
That's a shame. The season is lost, but one of the best things that could have happened to the Rox was to have Desmond's numbers get superficially impressive enough that a desperate team would take that contract off their hands.
   30. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 21, 2019 at 02:18 PM (#5863597)
Rockies get four in the third to take a 5-1 lead over the Yankees, and could have had more, except the home plate umpire chose not to call an obvious catcher's interference against Gary Sanchez.

I just flipped over to WGN to see if the Cubs game had started or if it was still in a rain delay. The rain delay programming appears to be some sort of Lee Smith Hall of Fame special. When I flipped it on I caught the tail end of a sequence where the voice-over was saying that Hank Aaron is third all-time in hits, and Lee Smith is third all-time in saves, implying that somehow that supports Smith's worthiness for the Hall.

Wow.

Frustrated Yankees

Momma said there'd be days like this, but meanwhile there's an interesting game going on in Baltimore, at least through the first six innings.
   38. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 21, 2019 at 03:23 PM (#5863614)
Aaron Boone has made mid-inning pitching changes with no runners on base in two straight innings, with a 7-2 deficit. What a maroon this guy is.

i just really hate this replay rule where sterling marte can stretch a routine single into a double, but get called out on replay because he happened to lose contact with the bag for 1/10th of a second while a tag was applied.

the rule should be applied like catcher's interference, meaning that the split second that there is any contact between the runner and the fielder, the play is dead. if the runner was initially safe, then he's safe whether or not he loses contact with the bag after the initial tag; if the runner was out, then he's out regardless of whether the fielder drops the ball after contact.

Yelich and Grandal with scheduled days off and Braun's back isn't cooperating so the Brewers lineup is................not great

cardinals doing everything they can to give this game away ... munoz triples to lead off the 7th and nobody can drive him in.

dejong walks to lead off the top of the 9th, then gets caught stealing. munoz homers on the next pitch. geez.

we're lucky we're leading 3-1.

come on martinez ... save the day.

have never seen Angry Pete Alonso before.

he just struck out swinging - then snapped the bat in half over his knee like it was a toothpick.

memo to self: Pete seems very easygoing - but if we meet, don't piss him off.

According to Fangraphs' BsR metric, the Mets are the second-worst baserunning team in baseball. They made another third out at third base in the first inning today, when Kevin Pillar cut down J.D. Davis trying to advance on a pop-up to center.

................

more like "BS metric," amirite? what team could possibly be worse?

10 days left before the lone trading deadline
so what about team's last 10 games? who might lose a grip on hope - or as Bruce sang, "A Reason to Believe" - and join the dump truck crowd?

AL
Angels 5.5 back, but are 7-3 recently
Rangers 6.5 back - but with a 7-game losing streak

NL
Rockies 5 back, off a 3-7
Padres - ditto and ditto
Pirates 5.5 back, off another 3-7
Mets 7 back, off 3 extra-inning losses in SF - 37 total innings - in 4 games
Reds 7 back, off yet another 3-7

NL flotsam likely to widen that list of trade objects nicely
