HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. Howie Menckel Posted: July 21, 2018 at 01:17 PM (#5713474)
Mets-Yankees at 1:05 pm. huh

Pitches thrown by relievers last night:

METS
Lugo 56
Gsellman 44

YANKEES
Warren 36
Green 29
Cole 20
Shreve 18
Holder 14

The Mets likely don't have Familia, either, as a trade looms.
The Yankees can scrape by with Chapman and Robertson.
:)

Ah, there's the Sonny Gray we all know ...

7.10 home ERA since the trade ... yeesh.
   4. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 01:44 PM (#5713480)
Gray for chatwood is still on the table. He's no hitting the cards through 2 so far today...

Yes he already has 2 walks, why do you ask?
   5. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 21, 2018 at 01:55 PM (#5713485)
Matt Carpenter is seeing the ball well.

Yadier Molina is slow.
   6. salvomania Posted: July 21, 2018 at 01:59 PM (#5713486)
Yadier Molina is slow.

I think Baez coulda made a sandwich, too, and still thrown him out.
   7. Howie Menckel Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:05 PM (#5713490)
yeah, the only thing weirder than Yadier having 93 career SB attempts is that he made it 58 times!

which is not good - but just underscores that it ain't just a sprint
:)

Didi! Tie game!
   9. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:15 PM (#5713494)
I finally get to see a Cubs game and it's not only a Chatwood start, but I've got the Cardinals' TV feed.
   10. manchestermets Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:15 PM (#5713495)
Ugh, Matz getting hit hard. And no help from the defense.
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:20 PM (#5713496)
Matt den Dekker getting quite a workout in centerfield this inning. No actual errors, but considerably different outcome with a good fielder. 4-1, NYY.
   12. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:35 PM (#5713502)
When Chatwood gives an intentional walk, it's really just for efficiency's sake.
   13. JJ1986 Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:36 PM (#5713503)
Asdrubal Cabrera ejected for not very much.
   14. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:37 PM (#5713504)

Bring on Sonny Gray.
   15. Meatwad Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:41 PM (#5713506)
He is going to walk in a run isnt he.
   16. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:41 PM (#5713507)
Imagine how bad Chatwood’s ERA would be if he weren’t lucky?
   17. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:42 PM (#5713508)
McCarver is just BRUTAL to listen to.
   18. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:44 PM (#5713509)
How the heck did Heyward make contact with that
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:46 PM (#5713510)
These are some BS hits.
   20. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: July 21, 2018 at 02:56 PM (#5713512)
Given his normal performance at NYS, I'll take that from Gray.

Now Robertson needs to clean this inning up.

Or ... not.
   21. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 03:28 PM (#5713514)
Chatwood and Wilson. Joy.
   22. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: July 21, 2018 at 03:31 PM (#5713515)
ALL RISE!

The wind couldn't stop that one!
   23. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 21, 2018 at 03:39 PM (#5713517)
Javying.
   24. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: July 21, 2018 at 04:02 PM (#5713519)
Oh joy ... one of those outings from Chapman ...

Blargh.
   25. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 21, 2018 at 04:14 PM (#5713522)
That had to be the most improbable 9th inning of the year, and maybe in Yankees history. But a win's a win.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 04:21 PM (#5713523)
Lol... McCarver is a tool. He's trying to subtly bad mouth Matheny and his supposed lack of aggression on the base paths (him and McLaughlin have been talking all day about how the Cubs are going first to third, which is something the Cardinals don't do)

Heyward has gone first to third three times today on a single, and McCarver "He's done it three times today, and seems to be doing that a lot this year, that is something he didn't do when he played for the Cardinals in 2015."

For the Record Heyward in his career advances more than one base 49% of the time(it's easy enough to look up) and this season, not counting today's game has gone first to third on a single 6 times this year and has advanced more than one base on a single 50% of the time this season. When he was with the Cardinals he went first to third 14 times and has advanced more than one base on a single 57% of the time.
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 21, 2018 at 04:23 PM (#5713524)

Picked up on that as well, but I couldn't tell if it was a slight against Heyward; which wouldn't have made sense, since he had a strong season with them.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 06:10 PM (#5713539)

The Cardinal announcers are trying to parrot the blogs criticism of Matheny, they made a big deal that today and yesterday were the lowest strikeout totals the Cardinals have had in a game all season (this has been one of McLaughlin's talking points most season long)
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 06:40 PM (#5713547)
Carpenter has homered in five straight games, and it would have been six if Billy Hamilton hadn't made one of the better homerun stealing catches you will ever see.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2018 at 07:35 PM (#5713582)
A new record in umpire embarrassment? Javy Baex complaining about a called strike is pretty damning.
   31. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 07:40 PM (#5713583)
cfb, how is it that you are listening to the cardinal broadcasters? all i can get on mlb.tv is the fox feed. are you watching a local broadcast?
   32. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 07:46 PM (#5713587)
geez, bader clocked that and it just got blown back. wrigley field ...
   33. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 07:48 PM (#5713588)
oops, forgot that today they are playing a double header, so i missed that whole first game while i was traveling.

heh, maddon gets ejected after an argument and it's 6 pm on the west coast. time for a cold bud.
   39. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:05 PM (#5713605)
i have to say that was probably not a swing that got baez out (and ejected when he argued) and then maddon with the magic words ...
   40. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:06 PM (#5713607)
Justin Upton misses a flyball in foul territory. Later in the same AB, home run. I really kind of hate Justin Upton.
   41. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:07 PM (#5713608)
wow, on the replay you can really make out maddon screaming 'what the ####!! you ###### up!!' but he wasn't tossed at first, i guess he just stayed around a little too long.
   42. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:09 PM (#5713611)
Home plate ump has to appeal to first on that. Javy got tossed pretty quick, considering it took maddon that long to get his.

I think he swung...
   43. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:17 PM (#5713614)
javy had to go when he threw his helmet the way he did. no option.
   44. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:19 PM (#5713615)
Nah, it was towards the dugout on the third out. Guys do that all the time without getting run.
   45. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:20 PM (#5713616)
This Machado dude any good ?

I f****** hate this Angel team.
   47. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:22 PM (#5713618)
Let's go Ryan PEDs Braun !
   48. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:23 PM (#5713620)
If the ump thinks it's a swing, he's supposed to call it a swing right away and then there's no appeal. It can only be appealed when the HP ump rules no swing. "The rule further states that appeals on a half-swing may only be made on a call of ball and when asked to appeal." The ump never appeals a call on his own and the batter has no right of appeal. Unless you want to train umps to never call a check swing on their own (or allow an appeal to both sides which is basically the same thing).
   49. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:23 PM (#5713621)
I have been hating the Giants' team for like 4 years. Now, finally, it is very good.
   50. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5713622)
Greg Holland is not having a good season.
   51. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5713623)
lord, why is holland in there? lord, lord, lord ...
   52. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:25 PM (#5713624)
Saladino sucks.
   53. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:26 PM (#5713626)
Not that it's likely to ever matter but if the manager goes to the ump to double-switch but nobody confers with the new pitcher, is that a mound visit?

Has any team in any game had a serious issue with the mound visit rule?
   54. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:27 PM (#5713628)
Muncy 4 Potus !
   55. Howie Menckel Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:30 PM (#5713631)
a) that was really close with Baez and swing. I think yes, but close
b) stipulating to Walt's point, do Baez and Maddon really both not know the rule?
c) wow, Maddon really is an #######, either way
   56. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:32 PM (#5713632)

Matt Carpenter is currently unstoppable.
   58. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:44 PM (#5713635)
Come on Walt, you know I didn't mean literally. It was close, and home plate umps usually and rightfully defer in that spot.

Removing the pitcher doesn't count as a mound visit.

Sure, not sure what that has to do with that play. Every single manager is getting rung in that spot after their player gets run. Every single one.

agree, he said the magic words simply because he had to get tossed in that situation. That is how you get men to follow you.
   63. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:55 PM (#5713641)
I don't know who the color guy is, but I'm surprised that Len is going along with the "he dropped the ball after the tag so he should be out nonsense." And then doubling down by saying the Cardinals should challenge. And then tripling down by being puzzled as to why they didn't.

Because it's not an out you idiots.
   64. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 09:57 PM (#5713643)
cards would not have gotten that out call on the SB in a million years. stupid announcers.

Agree again, there is no way that was an out, and no way anyone would have over turned that call, I'm watching this game with my gf and she is saying "what are they talking about? he dropped the ball."
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:08 PM (#5713646)
tied game.. I don't care who is the better team, when the Cubs and Cardinals play, it's almost always a game.
   68. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5713647)
I think javy gets that one...
   69. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5713648)
omg, i can't believe we just tied this game ...
   70. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5713649)
Right now, I'm kinda hoping for a hit by pitch to force them to pitch to Carpenter.
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:10 PM (#5713651)
No matter what the Cubs do next inning, is Carpenter going to get a leadoff intentional walk?
   72. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:11 PM (#5713652)
He should be ibb. He will be if maddon is calling the shots from the clubhouse.

   76. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:20 PM (#5713659)
Warning, drunk meathead opinion incoming.

Cubs we're more likely to win with a wpalk off in a tired ninth than holding on if they scored in the eighth.
   77. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:21 PM (#5713660)
It's a terrible percentage move, but I'm pretty sure you walk Carpenter right now. I think that they nibble for a pitch or two, then just throw up four fingers.
   78. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:21 PM (#5713661)
I'm guessing Brandon Hyde the bench coach is managing.
   79. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:22 PM (#5713662)
Also, Bryant sucks right now.
   80. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:23 PM (#5713664)
rain is coming down pretty good right now.
   81. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:23 PM (#5713665)
Have to give them credit, three of those pitches were close.
   82. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:24 PM (#5713666)
81- that's Justin Wilson in a nutshell.
   83. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:26 PM (#5713667)
I think right now Carpenter is an aberration when facing him. Anything the staff does isn't indicative of what they are doing right or wrong. I mean we've seen about three balls today that in a normal day would have been homeruns and get beaten down by the wind... Carp's went over the fence. He's just on a different planet right now.
   84. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:30 PM (#5713669)

stupid!!!!
   86. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:31 PM (#5713672)
horrible bunt by Wong... how can so many left handed hitters be so bad at bunting?
   87. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5713673)
Cubs defense is so good

You are giving too much credit... it's a sacrifice, it's supposed to be bunted to the third base side of the pitcher. You bunt to the first base side if you are bunting for a hit. That was just a bad sac.
   88. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:34 PM (#5713674)
wow... not sure that was a ball, this feels like a very tight strike zone.
   89. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:35 PM (#5713675)
de jong redeems himself ... cmon ozuna
   90. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:35 PM (#5713676)
lol... the announcer just made an interesting point... there have been 15 hits tonight.... 2 of them were extra base hits(for both teams)
   91. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:36 PM (#5713677)
I'm getting a feeling this game is about to get out of hand for the Cubs.
   92. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:36 PM (#5713678)
note.... I posted that before the pitch to Pham.

   95. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:40 PM (#5713681)
you have to be kidding me, a reality show that follows the "number one draft pick" in the NFL? That is really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
   96. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:41 PM (#5713682)
The Angels slouch under .500. Just a bunch of beaten dogs at this point.

okay, not sure why that matters in this particular situation, since there is one out.
   98. cardsfanboy Posted: July 21, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5713684)
I have no clue about this Maples guy, but man his ball has movement.
