Wait until you see Chris Pine pitch!

Mind you, the most recent Cardinal I can remember with movement like that was Sam Freeman, and he never actually did anything in his career... So it's a matter of getting it to work consistently.

CARDS WIN !!!

Record crowd in Oakland tonight. 56k+. Fun atmosphere. Baum walked six.

Giants tie the game on:
- K/WP to Hanson on what would have been the final out
- Pence hits a ball deflected by Olson into the Giants bullpen. A Giants reliever swings his chair in front of Piscotty as he is trying to get to the ball, but since it was "unintentional" there is no recourse. WTF?
   105. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2018 at 01:03 AM (#5713711)
As it stands for the Cardinals that a five game series with the Cubs is going to result in a one game change in the standings, either positive or negative. The fact that it's on the road is a positive... but it would feel like a missed opportunity if they win 3 out of 5 and a failure if they win only 2 out of 5, even though in theory 2 out of 5 would be considered a good thing for a team to do on the road against the team with the best record in the league....

And yet, even a steel chair can't stop Oakland right now....

Is there as website that will let you see a team's player stats for the season, then sort those by various splits? For instance, on BB-Ref I can go to the 2018 Pirates stats page and see the list of players and their season's stats. To see what every player has done in the last 10 days, though, it seems that I have to go to the splits page for each individual player. Does some site have the ability to do that with the whole roster on one page? I checked BB-Ref, Fangraphs, and ESPN, but if the capability is there I can't find it.

You can do it easy enough with pi if you want to use a pre-determined set of days, (7, 14, 28 or 365) but if you want to make it a custom number of days, I can't think of any way to do that for an entire team or league.

I didn't know where else to put this so I will tag it onto here...back when the Padres signed Hosmer I made a rather dire prediction of how things would turn out. I was a little off - I thought he would get off to a very slow start and then gradually pick up after the AS break. I had it a little backwards. Superficially, it looked like he got off to an ok start through May and then started sliding (he's been dreadful in July especially), but the net result is about the same. Here's what I predicted back on the thread when the Padres signed him back in February:

47. Moeball Posted: February 20, 2018 at 05:39 PM (#5627692)

As a long time Padres fan I will go on record with this prediction: Hosmer will be lucky to even reach 2 WAR in 2018. When it is May or June and he has a .220/.280/.380 slash line I won't be surprised. This contract is going to be a waste of $. When they already had to move Myers to first base previously because he can't field, and now they are replacing him with another mediocre fielder which will move Myers back to the OF, this has disaster written all over it.

OK, so it's July and Hosmer now has a .245/.313/.392 slash line with a .705 OPS and a 93 OPS+. He's listed on BRef with a WAR of 0.3. Before the season started I thought he was going to be lucky to reach 2 WAR - now it looks like he may not even reach 1!

He's the highest paid player on the team and according to WAR he's the 14th best player on the team. Wow! I'm sure impressed!

I hate it when I'm right, I really wanted to be wrong about this, but now the Padres have the worst record in the NL and while Hosmer isn't the only guy to blame, he is clearly part of the reason why...sigh.

Is anyone concerned that the AL playoff spots seem wrapped up in July? The only team left with a real shot seems to be OAK w 29% prob. of making playoffs. (other than NYY BOS determining which is wC and which wins division). Is this a function of strategic tanking?

Speaking of playoff probabilities, is anyone concerned with how Fangraphs calculates this? WAS is 6.5 games back of TWO teams and yet they are given about the same odds of winning the divis as PHI. And better odds than ATL. Is it simply based on Pythagorean projections? I'm guessing that it is; the NATs are under performing Pyth by 3 games and PHI is over performing by 3. So I guess that makes it a dead heat...?

Even more baffling; WAS is given a 5.3% of winning the world series and PHI only 1.2%. thats really strange what is that based on?

Final question: do people think Matt Carpenter is on a hot streak? Or is this just a statistical aberration? Do hot streaks never exist?

"You can do it easy enough with pi"

Thank you! It hadn't occurred to me to go in that way.

He has 8 homers in his last 20 ab---I would say "YES"
   113. salvomania Posted: July 22, 2018 at 12:43 PM (#5713775)
Carpenter hasn't hit a single since July 10 (9 games ago), yet is hitting .480 in those 9 games.

It's bad for MLB as a whole, that's for sure.

I think tanking definitely plays a role. 3 of the 5 teams in the Central were not even pretending to compete this year, so when Minny stumbled, the division was over.

Matt Carpenter with a leadoff bunt single, I'm sure the Cubs don't mind too much....of course he goes to third on a Molina double, and scores on a sac fly.
   116. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 22, 2018 at 02:32 PM (#5713804)
Oh, FFS, Molina isn't going to steal third. Pitch the damn ball.
   117. phredbird Posted: July 22, 2018 at 02:48 PM (#5713809)
i was going to chime in and say 'yes, matt carpenter is on a hot streak', but i'll leave how to define hot streaks up to others ... it seems like a very subjective term.
   118. For the Turnstiles (andeux) Posted: July 22, 2018 at 03:19 PM (#5713813)
107/108: On b-ref you can also go to the splits page for the team, and then click on a particular split. That brings up a box that shows that split for all the players on that team. (And the same thing works for going from League Splits to teams.)

"Is anyone concerned that the AL playoff spots seem wrapped up in July?"

imagine if they still only had 4 playoff spots. the Yankees and Red Sox - who repeatedly mailed it in vs each other in September in that "both equally safe" scenario before - already would be sending 5 players at a time on rotating two-week sessions to a rejuvenating luxury spa. then they would come back in mid-September for two weeks of tuneups before the real season finally resumed.

Syndergaard to DL with hand, foot & mouth disease?

EDIT: Appears official:
The Mets are putting right-hander Noah Syndergaard on the 10-day disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease (Coxsackie viral infection).

Weather Channel app indicates 100% chance of rain in the Bronx at 8:00 PM, falling to 35% by 9:00. Radar seems to show storm already moving out.

rainout leaves Yankees without a chance to beat up deGrom

or........

well, either way it's a rainout
   128. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 22, 2018 at 09:26 PM (#5713908)
The only two realistic makeup dates for tonight's rainout are July 30 and August 13. On the 30th the Yanks will be in the middle of a home stand while the Mets will be traveling from Pittsburgh to Washington. And on the 13th the Yanks will also be in the middle of a home stand, while the Mets will be en route from Miami to Baltimore. The only other open date for both teams is September 6th, but the Mets will be traveling from LA to Philadelphia, while the Yanks will be between series in Oakland and Seattle.
