HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

For all 2 Giants fans out there:

Andrew Baggarly @extrabaggs
Chase d’Arnaud is here, presumably for Joe Panik. This will very likely imperil d’Arnaud’s ability to play in the Triple-A All-Star Game, which is a disappointment I’d imagine he will overcome.

Stratton optioned for Samardzija. No surprise there.

Strickland moved to 60-day DL to create a 40-man spot for d’Arnaud, whose contract was purchased. Panik to DL, officially.

You might recall that Hunter Strickland was testing the effectiveness of his Anger Management counseling when he put himself on the DL recently. Another red-ass bites the dust.

Cubs radio pre-game show interviewing Marty Brennaman. Paraphrasing: "You need to have a sense of humor about this business, and not take things too seriously."

It is hard to believe this is basically the same Reds team that started the season 3-18.

Some roster adjustments:
The New York Yankees recalled outfielder Clint Frazier from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre before Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. . . . To make room on the roster, the Yankees designated right-hander David Hale for assignment. Hale pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief of struggling right-hander Sonny Gray in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone also said Triple-A right-hander Luis Cessa will likely be called up to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader at Baltimore. Cessa is 4-8 with a 4.53 ERA in 32 career games with New York. Right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga was a candidate to start against the Orioles but has been ruled out because of a sore shoulder. Boone said Loaisiga had an MRI on Friday and will visit New York's team doctor on Monday.

Tanaka will be back Tuesday, which should help.

Gardner & Judge start the game with back-to-back HRs. Trading for J.A. Happ doesn't seem like such a great idea, either.

Did Harvey have plastic surgery when he left the Mets or something? It looks like he shaved his head, but even beyond that he just looks really different.

Looks like they might be going with the 'make him pitch until his arm falls off' strategy? I'm in favor.

Is it confirmation bias, or does Suarez absolutely murder the Cubs?

Edit: .278/.359/.511 career, .313/.395/.563 this year. So kinda, yeah.

Eugenio has been murdering everyone. Going into today he has a .957 ops against the Cubs. About the same as his season line.
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2018 at 04:44 PM (#5706724)
Happ didn't seem to have much interest in using his glove on that come-backer, but using his butt just deflected the ball for a base-hit.

Zobrist just adjusted his position in the batter's box and choked up to golf an RBI double on the kind of pitch that just handcuffs Bryce Harper. RHP Jared Hughes on the mound, BTW.

This is not my hobby horse, but I'm trying to figure out what's going on with Bryce and I note that this is the kind of thing that makes the difference between getting your team back in the game against just resigning yourself to doing the same ol' same ol' for the umpteenth time with the same ol' results.

And now the Cubbies just tied it up. Although with those red hats in the field I could've sworn it was the Phillies' putrid defense putting on this sh|t show.

I am very glad snapper was very wrong that Betances is useless and no longer dominant.

there are rumors may go into "sell" mode shortly, with their AAA keystone combination possibly joining the Pirates soon.

those players are named Kramer and Newman. this totally needs to happen.
   33. rconn23 Posted: July 07, 2018 at 07:34 PM (#5706789)
Well, Chapman has come out of the game. The Yankees are running out of good players.
   34. rconn23 Posted: July 07, 2018 at 07:36 PM (#5706790)
And he was limping. The division race will be over fairly soon if Hicks and Chapman are out for any length of time. The Yankees cannot stay healthy.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU TO MAKE YOU SUCH A FATALIST.

Jesus Christ.

Hicks has a leg cramp.

Our bullpen will be fine.

You should meditate. I do it. It helps.

This is a very good team. We gonna be alright.

Also, this, of all times, is the best time for, if needed, 10 days off, since there are 4 days with no games.

Maybe smoke some weed or something.

Mark Reynolds. Same spot. He has homered to left center on his last two swings. 2-0 Nationals.

DFA rumors??

Meanwhile, back at the mound, Max Scherzer has thrown 29 pitches to complete 3 scoreless innings.
   38. Bote Man Posted: July 07, 2018 at 08:08 PM (#5706804)
But Starlin Castro (huh??!!) and J.T. Realmuto (OK, I get that one) hit solo home runs off Max to tie it up 2-2 in the 3rd inning.

"WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU TO MAKE YOU SUCH A FATALIST."

That's a long story.

"This is a very good team. We gonna be alright."

Seriously, I'm not being fatalistic, and it's because I believe this team is very special that I want to see them win the division instead of having to once again roll the dice with a one-game winner take all. Unfortunately, the Red Sox just don't lose and the Yankees losing their second best player, their hottest player, their All Star catcher and dominant closer for any extended length of time might be enough to decide the division.

I certainly hope I'm wrong.
   40. rconn23 Posted: July 07, 2018 at 08:11 PM (#5706806)
No MRIs for either Hicks or Chapman, so that's good.
   41. Howie Menckel Posted: July 07, 2018 at 08:13 PM (#5706808)
the Orioles are now 40 games under .500.

a lotta baseball left, but I'm just gonna say it - this may not be their year.
   42. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5706817)
The Orioles are not a well run organization, starting with the ownership.
   43. Bote Man Posted: July 07, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5706824)
After the Nationals un-tie the game again in the 5th, Donny Baseball has LHP Wei-Yin Chen intentionally walk LHB Bryce Harper to bring up Mark Reynolds who has pwned him tonight. And so, a pitching change. 5-3 Nats in the 5th.

Since this is a Fox national game my cord-cutting a$$ can't watch it at home, so I might hustle over to the sports bar and hope they don't have the World Series of Poker dominating all the screens tonight.
   44. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 07, 2018 at 09:00 PM (#5706829)
That moment, when you think the Royals being up 3:0 might actually have a chance to win vs. the Red Sucks, and then a 4-pitch walk with 2 outs, and utter chaos and failure.

Let's go Royals !!!

############# !
Of course, the Royals will win in the end.

Xander Bogaerts with a bases-clearing double. I like Xander a lot.

Seems reassuring:
Marly Rivera, ESPN Writer

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Aroldis Chapman had a flare up of the tendinitis he's been suffering on his left knee; wasn't worth it to keep him in the game with a 4-run lead. Yankees have been monitoring the injury for a short while. Boone had said the problem wasn't bothering Chapman's pitching.

Mark Reynolds follows up last night's walk-off HR, with 2 HRs & a double in an 8-RBI night. Hope the Nationals save something for tomorrow when I will be in attendance.

I'll catch my first Mets game of the year tomorrow.

seats that usually cost $60 to $90, we got for $12.

less traffic, shorter concession lines, great weather and seats, and it's a ballgame.

I learned from Wrigley Field Cubs fans over 30 years ago that there's only one game at stake on any given day - so enjoy it.
   51. Bote Man Posted: July 07, 2018 at 10:00 PM (#5706851)
Chelsea Janes @chelsea_janes
Mark Reynolds, who was not on the first base depth chart when this season began, is getting a standing ovation for an eight RBI day, but not the first eight RBI day a National has had this week as they are five back in the NL East.
...
Mark Reynolds has a 10-RBI day. He's tied for the Nationals record with Anthony Rendon. This is absolutely nuts.
   52. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 07, 2018 at 10:00 PM (#5706852)
I wish you guys all the best for the games you are going to. I have my Willie McCovey Bobblehead already, so I am all set and happy for the next 100 years. And the Giants even won ! How about THAT !?

But please remember, you can choke on a hot dog. And beware of Dodgers' fans, they are ferocious.
And don't catch a foul ball in your beer, unless you want to make Youtube.

Have fun !

Last 4 wins: 52 total runs
Last 27 losses: 52 total runs

Even Swihart getting in on the offense for Boston. I suppose this 9th inning may seem unsporting, but when they keep throwing hittable pitches...
   56. Jay Seaver Posted: July 07, 2018 at 11:04 PM (#5706866)
And we've hit position-player-pitching with 2 outs in the 9th, which is weird. Is there any need to preserve the bullpen at this point?

The Yankees are 29-1

In a similar vein, in combing Zack Wheeler's last 9 starts, Matz's last 12, and deGrom's last 9, they have posted a 2.62 ERA in 189 IP. Their combined W-L: 4-11.
   62. Bote Man Posted: July 08, 2018 at 01:17 AM (#5706888)

Stanton heating up.

2 for 2, that single was the 2nd hardest hit ball this season by exit velocity.

I would not want to be on the mound against either Judge or Stanton.

I'm not sure I'd want to be on the infield against them, either ...

ok, they lost 9-0 and Eovaldi has a perfect game thru 6.

but it's baseball, and we got good seats with access to the Jim Beam Highball Club for $14 apiece (including fees). and it was a glorious day. and it's baseball. and it was Yoenis Cespedes Shinguard Day, so I've got that going for me which is nice.

Mets-ian note: you can't buy just a burger at the upper-level concession stands. burger+fries combo - or you'll get no burger and like it. well, you won't like it, because you won't get your burger (unless you go down to the lower level, where civilization remains intact).

MLBV TV is really pissing me off lately. I'm watching on my laptop, and with every break, one of 2 things happens. If I am on a different tab, the feed freezes at the start of the first commercial, and I have to go and refresh to get the game resumption. If I am on the tab and keep it open, the first commercial runs, then the second, then the third, then the fourth, then the fifth, then the sixth, then the seventh... By the time I figure out what's happening and refresh, the inning is half over.

Mets-ian note: you can't buy just a burger at the upper-level concession stands. burger+fries combo - or you'll get no burger and like it.

What?? You don't carry at least $1000 walkin around money for minor expenses like that?!

Glad you enjoyed the ballpark experience, such as it is these days.

Andre Fernandez @AndreMHsports
22 hits for the Marlins. 2 doubles, 20 singles. Marlins lead 10-2. Entered the game ranked 6th of 15 NL teams in total hits, worst in slugging percentage (.366). @HeraldSports

EDIT: <sad trombone tune>

88: So what was the Marlin's BABIP today; 22 for about 35, over .600? It's like getting no-hit by Bobo Holloman in reverse. Stoopid Ryan Madson keeps getting rocked in ERA while not pitching all that poorly.

Luke Farrell has some magic juju dust that turns him into a really good high leverage reliever, but it only works in extra innings...

Jackson Stephens: the AGGRESSIVE attorneys!

Joey Votto bobbles the ball on the putout at 1B and slo-mo replay shows that the ball wasn't even in his glove as he stepped on the 1B bag. So the Cubbies get a huge break here.

Upon further review, Russel is safe at 1B on the E-3. Now comes the Bote Man to save the day!

EDIT: CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! da Bote Man's keen eye for the strike zone takes ball 4, forces in the winning run. I am here to accept praise on his behalf.

That play by Votto was the weirdest error I think I've ever seen.

So the Cubs load the bases and score the walk-off run without getting a hit. What a weird sport this baseball is sometimes.

Sterling inning for the Reds. 3 walks, wild pitch, error.

Dan Kolko @masnKolko
Mark Reynolds says the last time he pitched in a game was Little League. Had been asking Davey to do it for a little bit now. Said he had all these things he planned to do if he ever pitched...and then got out there and was so nervous he just tried not to hit anyone.
