has carpenter got his swing going, or what?

he really launched that one.
   202. cardsfanboy Posted: August 05, 2018 at 03:01 PM (#5721310)
Matt Carpenter is having a pretty decent season I would say.

but considering the number of head to head games they still have left to play and that* I still think the Nats are the clear favorite.

That just presents opportunity for the Nats to bury themselves even farther down in the standings. I'm thinking it's the Braves this year, the Phillies just don't seem as balanced, but I haven't looked at any numbers to substantiate this at all.

The strength of the Nationals in recent years has been solid starting pitching, but they just haven't gotten that this year. Strasburg is back on the DL with a pinched nerve in his neck (was supposed to be magically cured by "a shot", but no Stras to be seen), Roark has only recently gotten not-stinko, Hellickson can only take you twice through the opposing batting order, and the rest of the spots have a "help wanted" sign**. The Nats were in front of the Cardinals on the waiver wire, but passed on Tyson Ross, possibly because he is owed something like $200K per start after already having met pre-requisites in his contract so it's more than the reported $500K. The Nats need pitching, pitching, pitching, but it aint a-comin.

* I read your "and that" with an eastern Pennsyljersey accent.

** I forgot about Gio Gonzalez, but he's entirely forgettable. Fück that guy. If Mike Rizzo had any sense he'd ship Gio back to Oakland.

Cardinal announcers are again going over how crappy the Cardinals organization as a whole has been for the past 7 years including the minor leagues, and how it has all the sudden become good in the last two weeks.
(note: not just the major league team, but the minor leagues also, the anecdote was Bader heard something that is considered fundamental baseball, and mentioned that he never heard that before... the point was that the Cardinals in the minors aren't teaching fundamentals)
   205. perros Posted: August 05, 2018 at 03:35 PM (#5721324)
Surprised we're not hearing from A's fans these days.
   206. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 03:37 PM (#5721327)
Tanner Roark just did a belly-flop to snag a sharp Billy Hamilton groundball back to the mound and get out of the inning. And brother, does he have plenny belly to flop on!

Cubs trying to Javy their way back into this one.
   209. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:00 PM (#5721332)
OK, Javy. Easy now. There is such a thing as over-Javying.

EDIT: And, yep. Out on replay. Why the hell would you try to steal third with two outs and down two runs?
   210. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:12 PM (#5721335)
Trevor Story's three-run homer puts the Rockies up 3-1 on the Brewers as they head to the eighth. Story hit two two-run homers last night, and has hit seven homers in seven games against the Brewers this year.
   211. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:21 PM (#5721338)
Cubs determined to piss this one away on the basepaths, it would appear. Splitting with San Diego is not the way to win the division.
   212. Voodoo Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:22 PM (#5721339)
Ugh. Two crucial 2-out TOOTBLAMs from Cubs baserunners in back to back innings, with runners in scoring position.
   213. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:25 PM (#5721340)
Why the hell would you try to steal third with two outs and down two runs?

They say you're not supposed to make the 3rd out at third base, nor the 1st out at first base. I guess you shouldn't make the 2nd out at second base either. These unwritten rules are really complicated!!
   214. Voodoo Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:27 PM (#5721342)
They say you're not supposed to make the 3rd out at third base, nor the 1st out at first base

Uh... I don't think that's what they say.
   215. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:28 PM (#5721343)
Nats beat the Reds 2-1, which frankly surprises me a little bit since Kelvin Herrera has not looked comfortable since coming to D.C.

The Marlins have somehow tied up their game in Philly in the 7th, 3-3.

The Mets are valiantly trying to claw back in the 10th inning, down 5-4 to the Braves.

This is pennant race baseball. I lovehate it.
   216. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 04:31 PM (#5721345)
Jorge Castillo @jorgecastillo
Martínez said Strasburg is scheduled to throw a bullpen Thursday. It’ll be his first since going back on the DL.

I wonder what will break on Strasburg's body during this test bullpen??

You see a guy like Strasburg and you wonder how fiberglass could possibly be so strong, since it also has glass in it.

Pittsburgh's Sunday home gear is pretty epic.

I think its really cool that Minor league teams do this.

Caratini moves to third base in a tie game...can Caratini actually play third base??
   224. perros Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:01 PM (#5721364)
Players should either stop sliding headfirst or protect their fingers in some way. George Springer just messed up his hand when he caught a digit in Chris Taylor's glove at second.
   225. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:02 PM (#5721366)
Don't know. On paper the better thing to do would be to put Contreras in the OF, Caratini behind the plate, Baez to 3rd and Zo to 2nd. But games aren't played on paper.
   226. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:08 PM (#5721370)
The Brewers scratch out 3 runs in the 9th to tie it up against a rocky Rockies defense. Going to extra innings in Milwaukee, tied 4-4.
   227. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:09 PM (#5721371)
Dammit. Rockies shat the bed again against the Brewers.
   228. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:10 PM (#5721373)
Players should either stop sliding headfirst or protect their fingers in some way.

I have noted that a number of players wear those funny-looking E-Z Bake Oven mitts on the base paths even if they haven't injured their hands previously. So maybe that's becoming A Thing?
   229. perros Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:11 PM (#5721375)
Asdrubel Cabrera has been a huge acquisition. His eighth-inning two-run shot into the upper deck at CSB moves the Phillies to 15 games over .500. Huge stretch over next ten days with series in Arizona and at home with the Red Sox.
   230. Howie Menckel Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:14 PM (#5721377)
I think the Rockies sent Little Leaguers out there for the 9th with their 4-1 lead

Bottom of 9
Defensive substitution: Adam Ottavino replaces Jon Gray at pitcher, batting 9th.
Mike Moustakas homered (fly to RF).
Travis Shaw grounded out (ground ball to P).
Ryan Braun reached on interference.
Ryan Braun advanced on a stolen base to 2nd.
Jonathan Schoop struck out looking.
Erik Kratz reached on dropped third strike (wp). Ryan Braun advanced to 3rd.
Orlando Arcia doubled (line drive to LF). Ryan Braun advanced to score. Erik Kratz advanced to 3rd.
Offensive substitution: Hernan Perez pinch hitting for Corbin Burnes.
Orlando Arcia advanced on a wild pitch to 3rd. Erik Kratz advanced to score.
Hernan Perez struck out swinging.

This would be a bummer to see the Cubs come all the way back, only to blow it because Carl Edwards had one of his 30-pitch innings.

Over 50 people have been shot in Chicago this weekend (36 of them since midnight), and it will receive almost no coverage across major media platforms outside of Chicago.

Geeeze! The Cubbies haven't even lost yet!

per post 182, according to fangraphs you are rigth, the Indians would be a great bet, they are paying 14-1 but fg says their odds are 1 in 7. they call it an 'underlay" in betting, which is kind of an odd terms, it means they are under bet. so yes CLE is a huge underlay.
   235. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:25 PM (#5721385)
Welp, looks like we'll have a tie atop the NL Central by day's end.

I still think they're the favorites to eek out the NL Central in the end, but it's been frustrating to watch them sorta spin their wheels so far in the second half. They aren't really in a position to be splitting or losing series to the likes of the Padres.
   238. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:33 PM (#5721391)
At least Rosario is removing all doubt.
   239. Voodoo Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:33 PM (#5721392)
I don't think we'll be seeing Rosario in a high leverage situation again this year, at least I hope not. This is why you buy relievers at the deadline, so you don't have to turn to AAAA flotsam deep in tight ballgames, right? Right? RIGHT?!
   240. Bote Man Posted: August 05, 2018 at 05:37 PM (#5721395)
OK, NOW it's over. Aren Nolanado circuit clout puts the Rockies up 5-4 in the 11th.

Mostly just catcher Tom Murphy, who managed to have a catcher's interference, dropped third strike, and a wild pitch (should have been a passed ball) allowing the tying run to score.

Billy Beane, eager to increase fan interest, has traded for Shawn Kelley from the Nationals who is guaranteed to give up home runs by the bushel-basket. Details to come.

The Athletics get Shawn Kelley and cashmoney. The Nats get international bonus slot value.

b) for this event, even beleaguered NY/NJ papers will have multiple reporters there

Steve Pearce in vs RH starter? He’s 5-15(.333) with. 2 HR 3 RBI vs Tanaka

Also note - JD Martinez is 7-14(.500) with 3 HR and 7 RBI vs Tanaka

Wow, the ESPN MLB standings page looks incredibly awesome. Will now be my GOTO page for standings.

Oakland only 4 behind the Arestros... too early to call the A's the surprise team of the season (STotS) ?
   254. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 05, 2018 at 07:48 PM (#5721431)
A victory tonight would be helpful to the Yankees, even if winning the Division is now a bit of a long shot. With a healthy Judge & Sanchez, the Yanks could still be a formidable playoff opponent, especially if they can get Severino back to form, and the good Tanaka, who has been much in evidence lately, shows up for the playoffs. David Price is sporting an impressive 24.72 ERA against the Yankees this season, and keeping it in that territory might force some difficult decision-making on the Red Sox in the playoffs if things match up right.

Ok, so the worst thing that could happen, would be a comebacker that hits Price and he has to leave in the first ?!
I am not going to wish that, because I want the Bombers to win.

I haven't seen that in a long time, checked Netflix: nope. Checked Hulu: nope. Checked Amazon: I can rent it for $4, even though I'm already paying them bastids for Prime.

This country is most certainly NOT great again, our sh|t is sliding downhill.

Every time I hear something like that, I wonder if there's a chance for local video stores to make a comeback, considering that independent bookstores and record stores are doing better than one might expect. I'd be terrified about using that argument to try and secure a loan, though.

I appreciate that the ESPN booth discussed the controversy of the Astros acquiring Osuna - and did I see child abuse claims as well? wow

otherwise, I was wondering why Chapman's name didn't already come up

so
a) what was the disposition of the Chapman issues
b) what are the claims against Osuna
   279. Jay Seaver Posted: August 05, 2018 at 10:27 PM (#5721487)
I don't think there are actual child abuse claims against Osuna, but it's part of the full name of the agreement between the league and the players.

Nothing substantive will come from the Osuna camp as his case has not yet been heard, so he CAN'T say anything. Why they chose to issue that rambling, useless statement is puzzling.

Exactly where you want the pitch on a guy giving the bunt away early.
   288. Chip Posted: August 05, 2018 at 10:53 PM (#5721498)
#### this stare down. You’re giving away the bunt, punk.

This is all on Cora.

Kinda feel like Bogaerts had something to do with that.

Grrrr.

Goddawful E6, but it remains a Cora-created rally.

This is all on Cora.

Two walks & an error?

busy weekend

did Holder get traded to the Red Sox and be forced to keep pitching, or did the Commissioner insist on equal rights for Yankees batters? wait, Holder didn't get a week off before pitching in a huge spot, so must be the latter

Vasgersian rightly noting the gift-wrapping of this inning with 2 BBs and an E on a double-play ball.
   296. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 05, 2018 at 11:05 PM (#5721508)
The first out of the 7th inning recorded as a 3-1 game hits the 3-hour mark. Appropriate to celebrate with a pitching change.

Two walks & an error?

Yes. For anyone paying attention to how the inning was managed.

I believe the stat is that the quickest NYY-BOS games since 1994 were last night and the night before.

so a market correction is due - though the NYY bullpen is well-rested (more than they would like), so I don't see them going extras here.

So annoying to have a chance to sweep despite missing your best pitcher and multiple starters in the lineup, and then have your manager go passive.
