HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 01, 2019 at 01:27 PM (#5847341)
Watching the Twins-Rays game on MLB - the Twins' broadcast has a "Keys to Success" or some such sponsored by a pizza place. According to the broadcast team, the Twins' keys to success in June are "Continue solid pitching" and "Continue record-setting offensive pace." That's some insight right there.

HOW MANY RUNNERS WILL THE CUBS LEAVE ON BASE TODAY?!

Tanner Roark faces off against his old team in Cinci this afternoon. He pitched a 1-2-3 first inning while Erick Fedde is already in hot water thanks to the fundamentals of his defense behind him. Bad Davey continues to impress as a Big League manager in preparing his team.

Erick Fedde is already in hot water thanks to the fundamentals of his defense behind him.

Now Matt Adams boots a grounder at 1B to prolong the inning for Fedde, but he is able to get out of the 2nd inning without further damage. The Nats are like a salmon swimming upstream.

HOW WILL THE RED SOX CONTINUE THEIR SEASON TOWARD MEDIOCRITY...

Oh nevermind, this is a house money season anyway. Wouldn't mind seeing someone like the Brewers or Tampa win it all anyway....
   7. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2019 at 07:31 PM (#5847462)
solo homeruns for each team makes it 1-1...
Sadly the Cardinals broadcast is on Fox(local tv only) and the Cup is on NBC(local broadcast only) and I only have one tv with an antenna.... so I'm going to miss Cardinal fans erupting in applause as the Blues score at will against the Bruins....
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2019 at 07:37 PM (#5847463)
Heyward, the only true offensive force of the Cubs... makes it 2-1.

Keston Wee Hing Natsuo Hiura hits the game-tying home run in Pittsburgh to hand the first Blown Save to Nats reliever Felipe Rivero, now known as Felipe Vazquez with the Pirates. I guess that witness protection program isn't working out for him???

Christian Yelich just got hit on the left forearm, and looks like he really felt that one.

The Pittsburgh Crawfords, huh? I've never heard of them, but there were also the Homestead Grays from just across the Monongahela River. They are often associated with Washington, but they originated and played in Homestead, PA near Pittsburgh for most of their time.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2019 at 08:25 PM (#5847473)
I have to watch the Blues game.... but it's hilarious the quality of fan difference between a St Louis team and a Boston team... Boston booed every Blue introduction, St Louis gave polite applause for every Bruins player... the difference between class and....well Boston.
   16. Bote Man Posted: June 01, 2019 at 08:27 PM (#5847474)
No idea how Lorenzo Cain caught that ball. Nice!

I love Domingo German. He's been great. But the regression has hit. The Yankees really need another starter like Keuchel, who can at least give them some length.

Is there any team in baseball that doesn't need a starter like Keuchel....same with a closer like Kimbrel.... there is not one team in baseball that couldn't benefit from either of those.
   21. Jay Seaver Posted: June 01, 2019 at 08:56 PM (#5847479)
Xander Bogaerts looking pretty good tonight.

I agree, but most of those teams aren't contenders, and the Yankees ownership really owes this team some help after they way they've performed with all the injuries.
   24. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2019 at 09:01 PM (#5847483)
The Marlins could use Keuchel and Kimbrel ... so they would have some assets to trade.

Reports the Phils are talking to the Ms about Jay Bruce. I know Herrera is gonna be gone for a while but are they really thinking of a Harper-McCutchen-Bruce OF? Surely there's one of those speedy can't hit guys available. KC's asking price for Billy Hamilton can't be that high, can it?

Brewers 10, Pirates 10 in the 12th inning in Pitt. Both benches are empty so we get to see Zach Davies PH for Matt "Hey hey hey!" Albers.

Plus, there's some nasty weather to the north moving east-southeast that might rain on this parade before too much longer. The tension builds!

Pirates load the bases in the 12th, but Adrian Houser muscles up and strikes out Josh Bell to keep it tied.

Those were two piss-poor ABs from Marte and Bell. Geez.
   34. Spahn Insane Posted: June 01, 2019 at 09:17 PM (#5847493)
Marte grounds into a force at home on the first pitch with the winning run at third and one out, Bell then strikes out swinging on three pitches on a pitch high and away after taking two fastballs right down the middle.

yep... my dog has recently developed a fear of thunderstorms and she is totally freaking out right now... the only thing that helps is she wants to cuddle with me... it's cute but frustrating considering she was fine a year ago with thunderstorms.

Aroldis Chapman gets his 253rd career save, passing Dave Righetti (252) for 36th place on MLB's all-time saves list. Red Sox sink to .500, 10 games back of the Yankees in the All-Important Loss Column.

you've always wondered, "Has any Cy Young Award winner ever faced three other Cy Young Award winners in consecutive games?"

yes. In 1973, Tom Seaver took on Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, and Ferguson Jenkins.

and concluding tonight, Jacob deGrom has just faced Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and now Zack Greinke.

and that is a very cool piece of trivia... (genuine comment, not subtle sarcasm)

7 years ago tonight, Johan Santana came as close as any Mets pitcher ever has to tossing a no-hitter, allowing just one hit - so close that it is listed in the MLB record books as a no-hitter.

Carlos Beltran got a base hit off him that hit the chalk down the third base line, but an erroneous umpiring call - just before replay was launched - led to the mistake.

ooh, really interesting update from Mets announcer Gary Cohen, who explains that because the ball down the 3B line bounced in front of the umpire, it wouldn't have been reviewable anyway.

Gary says he is "not convinced" that the ball was clearly foul, even though it hit the chalk beyond the third base line. that is technically possible (could be foul in the air over the bag and then drift fair), but feels like a hometown reach.

still, it's worth putting out there.

deGrom pitch count by inning vs DBacks:

10
7
10
10
10

Greg Maddux: hold my beer

and now a dismal 19 in the 6th

but, 6 scoreless on 66 pitches is more than respectable
   51. Howie Menckel Posted: June 02, 2019 at 12:31 AM (#5847518)
geesh, gets 2 outs in 7th, defensive blunder brings a run in - and after some lower-body tweak, he allows a hard-hit double

out goes deGrom at 89 pitches. sort of good news is that he's pissed that he got taken out
   52. Howie Menckel Posted: June 02, 2019 at 12:47 AM (#5847519)
Dom Smith hits one out to CF that still hasn't landed, and Mets now lead MLB in most runs scored 7th inning or later, no kidding.

(seems like most of those were scored against Nats' bullpen, but still)
   53. Walt Davis Posted: June 02, 2019 at 12:52 AM (#5847520)
How are the Mets doing on runs given up before the 7th cuz that could make a difference.

On the bright side, at least Chatwood is upset with himself for throwing a strike -- that's a change from last year.

Yes, Cubs-Cards back if nobody noticed. Cards blowing it open 5-2, b6.

World Series Game 1 rematch right here, I do believe.
   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 02, 2019 at 01:19 AM (#5847523)
It's fitting that the Cubs finally got a hit with a runner in scoring position, and it was a bunt single that didn't score any runs.
   57. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 02, 2019 at 01:40 AM (#5847524)
God damn, Joe, it's nearing 2 am out here, let's knock off the match-up pitching changes.

Welp, safe to say the Cubs finally fall out of first place tonight/this morning.

So, Kyle Ryan is pretty terrible. Glad Joe saw fit to bring him in to a game that was still winnable.

I kid, I kid. But seriously, folks, the entire NL East at this moment is 5-5 in their last 10 games, except the Nationals who are 6-4. Look out, here they come!

You’re getting Max Scherzer, too. And for those into incitement excitement, possibly the Nationals bullpen.

Could be an interesting match-up tonight:
Buster Olney, @Buster_ESPN

From @SlangsOnSports,
Gary Sanchez in his career vs. David Price, regular season/postseason combined:
18 plate appearances
78 pitches
6 home runs
6 swings-and-misses

very pretty double play by Baez... who in case everyone didn't know it, a very good defensive player. :)

and being allowed to play just one position all season, he's having a defensive season to talk about for years at the rate he's going.

Cardinal announcers pointing out that the Cardinals have never had a 300 win pitcher (not really sure there are many franchises that did to be honest) and of course that led into the comment that 300 wins is a dying breed, which is true, but I decided to look up among active players those who have a good number of quality starts.

1. I don't remember PI having quality starts as a stat you can look up, but it's there now, either I didn't notice or it's an addition done in the past year.
2. Wainwright doesn't even have 200 quality starts which surprised me... (188, 11th among active pitchers... behind

Only 4 pitchers have won 300 with one team - Walter Johnson (Senators), Mathewson (Giants), Kid Nichols (Braves), and Warren Spahn (Braves).

actually more than I would have guessed... Mathewson and Spahn would have been pretty obvious to me, never would have gotten Nichols.... and just assumed Johnson jumped around enough to not make the list... I would have at least looked at him and Young though to see if my memory was wrong.

apparently my memory of Johnson's career is totally out of whack with reality.

Max Scherzer through 8 innings against Reds: 15 K’s, 120 pitches. I assume that even with the Nationals bullpen woes, he’s done for the day, leading 4-1.

I would think so.

Thomas Boswell @ThomasBoswellWP
Max Scherzer strikes out Joey Votto on three pitches for 15th K & last out of 8th with 4-1 lead, then foams at the mouth (a little) as he grits teeth, stamps off mound after 120th pitch. Remember what you're watching.

I cannot remember a stretch where the Cubs were this absolutely useless with RISP. I believe dating back to Tuesday's game, they have one hit with RISP, and that was Descalso's bunt in last night's game.

Most excellent Twitter video of Max Scherzer screaming "NO!!" from the mound as Davey Martinez starts out of the dugout in the 8th inning.

exactly what I came here to post... at the same time I'm glad he left Waino in... it's the end of his career, he's done great things for this team... let him have his moments.

Cubs aren't scoring in this game. Just let Wainwright finish it.

If Wong doesn't win multiple gold gloves in his career, the system is broken.

if i was the owner of the cardinals, i would have been on the phone with mozeliak telling him to fire mike shildt if the cubs scored in that inning.

but i guess that's why i'm sitting here and they are sitting there, etc.

Davies goes eight innings and then Claudio and Burnes manage to not #### it up so Crew gets 3 of 4 in Pittsburgh which is great including seeing Clint Hurdle be totally unhappy which I think is his constant state of being. And Jimmy coming back Wednesday so that's awesome.

of course I could say the same about Baez or Bader...

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
This is the 44th time Max Scherzer has struck out 10+ while allowing 0 or 1 earned run. Only 6 pitchers in MLB history have ever done that more times:
Randy Johnson (108)
Nolan Ryan (106)
Roger Clemens (67)
Pedro Martinez (65)
Sandy Koufax (54)
Curt Schilling (47)

I like it when the Cardinal announcers are nice to the opposing players... Mclaughlin just stated that Hamels was fabulous today(his word, not mine) and that is what the game should be about... not looking for ways to diminish your opponent, but prop them up as worthy adversaries. (and yes in case you missed it...they do absolutely love Baez...like pretty much everyone should)
   94. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2019 at 04:28 PM (#5847596)
Not sure why the announcers are focusing on age and pitch counts... if I'm the manager and I have a 35 year old pitching well and hitting 120 pitches... I would be much more inclined to leave him in, than if it was a 25 year old... I probably wouldn't even consider leaving a 25 year old in, in that situation.

oh brother, today is just our day, i guess. wong avoids a TOOTBLAN by some miracle.

the play is under review.

Wong is on first base and they tried to pick him off... "announcer Wong is picked off." he steals the base....instead... they are going to replay, but looked safe to me.....if it was Baez making the tag he's out... but since it was Russell... I think he is safe.
   97. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2019 at 04:35 PM (#5847599)
replay wasn't able to overturn the call on the field. Wong with his 9th stolen base of the season... in 9 attempts.

Carpenter off the bench to stretch the lead to 2-0 with a single to score Wong.

ooh. nice. carp comes through.
