Is there even going to be a game? It's been raining non-stop here since 6 this morning.

Yes. The rain should quit in about an hour, then the game will start after however long it takes them to prep the field.

Pete Alonso says, "You hang 'em, we bang 'em!" It wasn't a terrible pitch, a breaking ball on the outside edge, but Alonso doesn't miss apparently.

Although he and his partner never did catch that band of counterfeiters passing phony $20 bills across the state.

another kid having fun out there
"In an elimination game between Vanderbilt and Louisville, with a trip to the CWS Finals on the line, junior Cardinals pitcher Luke Smith pitched a masterpiece of a game. After seven and two-thirds, the right hander from Champaign, Ill., had struck out nine Commodores, given up just one run and was poised to go the distance. With two outs and nobody on, Smith recorded his 10th strikeout of the night on a filthy curveball, then stared down Vandy first baseman Julian Infante and dropped two HARD "F--- YOU"'s in his direction. He also added a couple "sit the f--- downs," we think.

Tensions were obviously high, as both teams were on the brink of the College World Series. That was Smith's 106th pitch of the night, and he returned in the top of the ninth with his team leading 2-1. He promptly blew the game, walking a batter and giving up a game-tying RBI double before being relieved, spoiling what was one of the best outings of his life. Vandy tacked on one more run and eventually won the game 3-2, earning the other spot in the Finals against Michigan."

Victor Caratini resuming his pitching career in Chicago.

...and retires the side in order on nine pitches, making a terrific defensive play on a tapper to the 3B side of the mound. I love baseball.

"I was going to proudly claim him as a fellow Champaign native, but the kid seems like kind of a jackass."

Yeah, I don't mind some good trash talk, bat flips, etc. but this kid was way out of line. His coach also made a huge mistake leaving him in after he walked a batter in the 9th, leaving him in to face the heart of the Vandy lineup for the fourth time - at about 120 pitches.

Marlins 5
Phillies 3 F

This loss puts the Phillies' record at 39-38 which is somewhat surprising to me. If the Nationals beat the Braves tonight they will be back at .500 (38-38) for the first time since 23 April, which seems like a century ago. If tomorrow the Phils lose and Nats win...I don't know what to think at that point. But if it happens the Nats will have played insane baseball for 2+ weeks just to get back to .500 which means that they will likely go back to just cromulent play leading up to the All-Star Break. The NL East continues to perplex me.

A's hang on to down Rays 4-2, on a beautiful day at the Oakland Coliseum.
2019 AL MVP Matt Chapman delivered the go-ahead run *twice* after the Rays tied it in their half: homer in the third to go up 2-1, RBI double in the 7th to go up 3-2 (then came around to score on Laureano's bases-loaded HBP, second time "Laser" Laureano got plunked today).

Victor Robles just dropped to a knee in CF with no game action going on. After talking with the trainer for a couple minutes he walked off the field at Nats Park under his own power. Speculation is that it might be something like light-headedness as he kept rubbing his right eye on the way off the field. We won't know anything until after the game due to Nats policy of not releasing injury news during games.

I have zero faith in the Jays being able to hold this lead after coming back from a 6-1 deficit in Fenway.

Red Sox had a 6-0 lead after 3 innings, but Blue Jays come back to take an 8-6 lead in 8th. A 4-BB (2 with bases loaded) 2-WP inning helped a lot.

Rare play with 2 outfielder errors. Ball clanks off Astros CF’s glove, and RF picks it up but has ball squirt out of his hand on the throw. Don’t recall seeing that before.

Another non-hustle out of the box play for the Phils. Cesar Hernandez bloops a ball 15 feet fair, but doesn't immediately run and returns to first after a big turn. On the next play, Harper hits a ball right to the shifted SS, who touches 2B and throws to first for an easy DP. Segura loafed just the other day -- apparently non-hustle is not an issue with Gabe Kapler.

Time for a regime change. Bad farm system, lousy drafts, poor player development, ineffectual managerial leadership, what else is there?

good graphic in Giants game: Posey, Belt, BCrawford, and Sandoval are the first foursome (or more) NL teammates with 1,000+ games together since 1981.

The Nats bullpen surrendered 9 runs in innings 7, 8, and 9 to lose the game a winnable game. It fittingly ended on a Kurt Suzuki excuse-me "hit" that turned into an inauspicious double play.

They *almost* drew me in, but I'm too smart to believe in this team as long as the bullpen consists of this mish-mash. And unless they clone Old Hoss Radbourn 5 times to eliminate the need for a bullpen, this uneven play will continue. At least they have upped their win percentage to .487 so there's that, but otherwise I'm just gonna chill out about this season and keep my expectations low.

The upside of Holder's typical performance tonight is that at least Kahnle and Chapman can be used tomorrow, and with Happ starting you know the bullpen will be necessary.

Greinke pinch-hitting for pitcher in the 4th inning with the DBacks up 5-4 over Giants.

really? well, he's .303 with 2 HR and 5 RBI in 33 AB for a 139 OPS+ so far in 2019.

ok, only 59 career OPS+ - but that's nearly what some journeyman catchers settle for.

8 HR, 31 RBI, .225 AVG in 502 career AB

and only 24 AB in the bigs before age 27

Austin Voth grazed Mike Soroka's pitching arm during his AB last inning. The Braves have taken Soroka out of the game as a precaution, replacing him with Josh Tomlin.

This could be a huge chance for the Nats to capitalize and win 2 of 3 from the division-leading Braves. Let's watch on hidden camera to see how they'll fück it up.

I'm pretty sure a guy with more than one dong would make the Guinness Book of World Records.

Meanwhile, in our Nation's Crapital the Nats have tied it up 2-2 against the Braves bullpen after Josh Tomlin did yeoman work in emergency long relief. Grant Dayton was the victim for that comeback.

The Marlins lead the Phillies 6-2 in the B8 so if the Nats somehow win this game the NL East could look very different this week. I am still not a believer.

Tanner Rainey has been used 4 out of the past 5 days, so it was not a big surprise when he issued a walk to Albies and surrendered a circuit clout to Johan Camargo, then walked Swanson. Although I'd love to blame Davey M. he has few usable options here, although some of those limitations are the result of questionable choices over the past few games. There just always seems to be an unhealthy amount of bilge water no matter how fast the pumps operate on the good ship Nationals.

Braves' Soroka on Voth hitting him: "A 1-1 fastball, they’re not going up & in there. They weren’t doing that. It happens, it’s part of baseball. I’ve always been an advocate for pitchers hitting, so when stuff like that happens you wear it & make up innings the next time out.”

Guess who might not be here tomorrow? In my opinion, this altercation was chaotic enough to end Callaway's managerial tenure with the Mets.

Mickey Callaway told a reporter to leave the clubhouse, calling the reporter a motherfu**er multiple times.

"Don't be a smartass, motherfu**er*," Callaway said.

Jason Vargas, defending his manager, said "I'll knock you the f**k out, bro."

Mickey says Diaz won't go 5 outs. Was defiant. Said that's their plan

When (I) asked if that plan needs to be malleable when guy had thrown 12 pitches in 8 days, he said: "Why? Because you think so?"

Also said Lugo can go 50 pitches.

I hope you're not too banged up, Howie. FWIW, I've never thought of you as a motherfurther.

Today is the 35th anniversary of this game...

I knew which game you were referring to without even clicking on your link. I watched it in my shop, and it may have been the only regular season game I watched on my pre-cable TV that entire year. First time I'd ever even known about Ryne Sandberg, and what an introduction.

The Sandberg Game was the first time I really remember Bob Costas and Tony Kubek paired together on an NBC GotW, and I preferred them to Vin and Joe.

Willie McGee hit for the cycle in the defeat.

tl,dr: Please come watch our sh|tty team!

Although the Marlins do appear to be on a mini-roll lately.

Glenn Geffner @GlennGeffner
I’ve never done this before, but it’s time I get some things off my chest that need to be said. So here we go. My first real thread...

I love the enthusiasm I’ve seen on social media over the last several days. The young starters have been fun to watch. Bats are coming alive. Guys are playing hard every night. Win or lose.

20-15 over the last 35 games. More and more fans are telling me that they now see where this is headed, and they’re getting excited for the future of the Marlins franchise.

They see great talent graduating from the minors to the majors with more talent developing in waves that will arrive later this season, next year and down the road.

Now it’s time for people to start showing up at Marlins Park to support this team. You think it’s a coincidence they play better in front of 40,000 fans in St. Louis and Philadelphia than they do in front of 9,000 at home?

Having energy in the ballpark makes a huge difference. Seriously. You can get tickets for $10. There are even free tickets available to select games for first responders, active and retired military and seniors.

You wanted a new ballpark? You got one. You wanted a roof to get you out of the heat and rain? You got one. You wanted a new owner? You got one.

For anyone who claims they’re not coming to games because of players who were traded away, this team was last in attendance (and below .500 annually) with all the guys you now claim you can’t live without.

This ownership group is doing what they said they were going to do. They’ve invested in the ballpark experience and the community. And they’re building a team from the bottom up that will be able to compete annually, not once a decade.

I know there is a small core group of you who come out regularly. In some cases literally every night. I love you guys, your incredible passion and undying devotion. You deserve a winner more than anybody.

But for the rest of you, it’s time to start showing up. You’ve never been to Marlins Park? Grab the family and check it out once. You come once a year, come 2 or 3 times.

There is no doubt this team and this franchise is headed in the right direction for the long haul. It’s time for you guys to start showing up.

The ballpark is great. The food is great. Parking is close, safe and convenient. And, in my experience, it’s cheaper than other pro sporting events in town or at any other big league park I’ve seen for comparable convenience.

It’s time, South Florida. Hope to see you at Marlins Park.

It's nice to see Albert get his due. If they lose another game here and get swept, I'm going to burn something down.

Oh man, are the Dodgers ever the Rockies' daddy. 3 walk-off series sweep.

I can't think of one reason for Callaway to still be managing this team. He's not even BVW's guy.

My god, the link in #87 had enough pop-ups that I wondered for a minute if he'd linked to a streaming porn site.

I hope someone asked Bud Black why he tried to lose this game. Already without Trevor Story, he sat Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon, the team's two best hitters, in the same game against the team they're chasing. He even sat the surprisingly hot Ian Desmond. Rox went to war against the NL champs with Garrett Hampson (19 OPS+), Brendan Rodgers (34 OPS+) and Pat Valaika (-27 OPS+ [sic]) all in the lineup. Shockingly enough, they lost.

Angel Hernandez couldn’t have less idea of the strike zone if you blindfolded him.

#97: brings back memories of the Jim Tracy Sunday lineups.

He also did let Valaika bat with the possible go ahead run on 3rd instead of pinch hitting with Blackmon or Desmond.

All 3 hit by rookies, too. That had never happened 2 games in a row before Saturday, and now it's 3 games in a row.
