HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

The Nationals terrific teenager Juan Soto had his second multi-homer game of the season last night. The only other MLB players to do that before age 20: Mel Ott, Ken Griffey, Jr., and Bryce Harper. Won't be 20 until October. Keep an eye on him.
   3. karlmagnus Posted: June 30, 2018 at 01:16 PM (#5702654)
Harper and Strasburg are both ending up a little short of expectations (though both could still age well.) From Nats fans viewpoint, hope Soto does just that little bit better.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Er, have you noticed who they're playing? It's their Bizarro World version of the Yankees and the Red Sox.

The Blue Jays have announced that the dome will be closed all weekend during the heat warning.
That's a good thing because when the dome is open, the 1st base side (and 5th deck overall) become absolute ovens in the sun.
There isn't enough air circulation on the lower levels to provide any relief.
   6. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 02:47 PM (#5702677)
Has there been any insight as to why Tyler Chatwood has become postseason pitcher Rick Ankiel since joining the Cubs?
   7. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 02:49 PM (#5702678)
My working theory is that it's just to piss me off.
   8. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 02:50 PM (#5702679)
It took him EIGHT pitches to strike out an AL pitcher.

   9. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 02:52 PM (#5702681)
I was gonna put 20 bucks on him walking in a run there. Probably would have if Molitor would have told Mejia not to swing.
   10. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 02:55 PM (#5702682)
F***ing Chatwood.
   11. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 02:56 PM (#5702684)
Mauer doubling was a pretty good bet as that at-bat went on.

So is Kris Bryant dead or what?

10-day hangover.
   14. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 03:32 PM (#5702721)
Ha- Javy slid about the last 15 feet to the plate there. Nicely done.

Almora is have a pretty good game so far.
   16. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 03:58 PM (#5702737)
Chuck Fatwood. That is his new name.

Justin Smoak-ed the Tigers.
   18. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:00 PM (#5702739)
Man oh man, Chatwood is trash.
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:03 PM (#5702741)
Joe should've pulled him, if for nothing else, than there should be no way Chatwood can be in line for a win.
   20. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:08 PM (#5702743)
Chatwood can feel free to go back on paternity leave.
   21. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:09 PM (#5702745)
Did the rest of the bullpen die or is Joe just gonna punt this one?
   22. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:10 PM (#5702747)
Chatwood - Duensing. Sounds like a syndrome.
   23. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:11 PM (#5702748)
Maybe the most impressive part of that four-run meltdown was that Chatwood had gotten the first two outs on five pitches.
   24. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:12 PM (#5702749)
I know Mike Scioscia's just trying everything to jump start the team, but leading Kole Calhoun off is just about the dumbest idea possible. He's basically guaranteed that Mike Trout won't ever see an RBI opportunity.
   25. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:34 PM (#5702759)
Well well. Try as he might, Chuck Fatwood will not lose this game.

Chicago heat claims its second player of the day - first Rosario with "heat illness," now Almora with leg cramps.
   27. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:51 PM (#5702768)
Looks like Twins catcher Bobby Wilson will be the third. The brutally slow pace of the game isn't helping.
   28. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 30, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5702771)
Duensing pissed that away about as quickly as you'd expect.
   29. rconn23 Posted: June 30, 2018 at 05:00 PM (#5702775)
Verlander getting worked over by the Rays. They have looked really good as of late.
   30. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2018 at 05:07 PM (#5702777)
that is a good stat - Cubs-Twins 9-9 in the top of the 6th.

total extra base hits? just 2 - a double and a HR
   31. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 30, 2018 at 05:15 PM (#5702779)
Little bit different line-up tonight:
Coley Harvey, ESPN Staff Writer

Brandon Drury will get his first action since April today, and rookie Gleyber Torres is hitting cleanup. Those changes and the full Yankees lineup here:

Hicks CF
Judge RF
Stanton DH
Torres 2B
Gregorius SS
Andújar 3B
Drury 1B
Romine C
Gardner LF
Gray SP

I probably would have kept Torres in more "low pressure" batting order spots throughout his rookie season, but he'll probably handle this just fine.
   32. rconn23 Posted: June 30, 2018 at 06:26 PM (#5702795)
I'm hoping for an "it's baseball, anything can happen" start from Sonny Gray tonight. However, I'm glad the Braves/Cardinals is the Fox game being shown in my area so I don't have the option to watch the likely carnage.

[31] There's no low pressure spot in MLB. They'e playing for hundreds of millions of dollars. You've got to string your best/hottest hitters together.
   35. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 30, 2018 at 06:42 PM (#5702803)
Just watching the A's being awesome again, what a slo-mo on a steal to second.
I never thought I would, but I do love replay reviews and super slo-mo !
Too bad the A's don't stand an effin chance in the AL. Or do they ?
   36. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 30, 2018 at 06:48 PM (#5702808)
I am currently wearing my A's Sonny Gray t-shirt, and hope, as I always do, that he finally pitches a no-hitter vs. the Red Sucks.
I don't know what the odds are, but it seems like a long shot.
Nonetheless, Go Sonny ! Go Grinders !

Female Yankees fan just called WFAN sports radio and says she wants deGrom from the Mets (the vast majority of calls from the last 10 days or so touch on this topic.

"Let's get rid of two head cases in one shot - Sonny Gray, who can't pitch in Yankee Stadium, and Gary Sanchez, who can't catch."

Host asks why the Mets would want them, then.
"Because they need a catcher."
"But you just said he can't catch. And why would they want Gray?"
"The Mets don't need a pitcher - they need a catcher."

proof positive that equality has been reached - there are women who are just as stupid as men!"

   38. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 30, 2018 at 07:14 PM (#5702824)
Gray and Sanchez are indeed, a weird case of CantPitch and Catch... but they can still learn... I hope.

feel-good story of the day is return of Mike Zagurski to MLB for first time since 2013.

sure, he's 35 and he has a 7.05 ERA in 75 big-league IP and he allowed 12 ER in 6.3 IP in 2013. did I mention that he's left-handed?

so in comes our hero with the Brewers nursing a 3-2 lead in the 7th and the tying run at first base after a leadoff single. The Reds greet Zagurski with a walk, an RBI double, an intentional walk, and an RBI single. our boy departs, and in a bit of "rookie" hazing, Barnes enters to immediately allow a 2-run single to pad Zagurski's stats further.

Barnes enjoys it so much that he then allows a single to load 'em up for PH Michael Lorenzen - whose grand slam gives the Reds a 10-3 lead.

I lamented in yesterday's Chatter that the Reds had Duvall PH for Lorenzen even though the latter has the better career OPS+ (106 to 98) and had already homered in his previous AB.

This year, Lorenzen has 3 HR in 7 PA, which seems like a lot. So does 5 HR in 65 career MLB PA - a Ruthian pace.

as for Zagurski, now neither of us feel-good.

It seems like it has been a long time since the Red Sox' last grand slam, considering how prolific they were for a while there.

Aaron Judge set a MLB record last night, fastest to 50 HRs in his home park, 134 games. Might need some more records tonight to compensate for Sonny Gray's not so stellar effort (so far).

You made me look up the Cardinals by month under Matheny. Since Matheny has taken over as manager, the Cardinals have had 5 months where they posted below a .500 record... May 2012(13-16), June 2017(13-16), June 2018(12-14), June 2016(12-13), June 2012(13-14)... (and two other months where they posted exactly a .500 record June 2013(14-14), May 2017(13-13)... apparently May and June is the months that they suck under Matheny.

This isn't that bad of a loss for the Yankees. It affirms that Gray is essentially useless and hopefully emphasizes even more the need to get a starter. Sale vs. Gray was a mismatch on paper and it turned out to be every bit of it.

Now if the Yankees can't hit Price tomorrow, then I'll worry.

Sonny Gray has the highest home ERA -7.10 - minimum 13 starts in Yankee history. I understood the trade at the time, two injured prospects and a high ceiling or bust prospect, but he's been abysmal this year.

Willians Astudillo, long time contender for the title of the most interesting guy in the minors, made his big league debut tonight, going 1-for-2 while playing left and center. Or, if you're familiar with him, playing left and CENTER!?!?!?

He's been called a one tool player - a guy who can make contact with seemingly anything - but he's slow and, historically, without power. That said, the power has ticked up a grade or two in recent years, and he's can credibly play or fake a few spots (he's primarily a catcher). He's also 5-9 235 and insanely out of place in center... but the Twins resorted to a few emergency measures today (Logan Morrison to the outfield, odirizzi as a pinch hitter) and so... here we are.

Michael Lorenzen of the Reds has hit 3 home runs this week. Now, that is not that extraordinary. Players do that all the time. However, Michael Lorenzen is a RELIEF PITCHER. He is hitting .667/.714/2.881 on the year. today's blast was a grand slam to kill the Reds 8-run rally.

Gray seems to have the pitching equivalent of Chuck Knoblauch syndrome. Not as bad as Rich Ankiel, but more than enough to matter. Can't seem to throw his good stuff effectively when it matters. Not sure he can fixed, especially in the middle of a MLB pennant race.
