How will the Astros "split squad" win today?!!!

The Yankees placed Masahiro Tanaka on paternity leave this morning, meaning he'll miss his start tomorrow after the birth of his little girl in New York. He's being replaced on the roster by Nestor Cortes Jr., who was recalled from Triple-A.
Might be an Opener game tomorrow.

Clean-up hitter Didi Gregorius hits a 2-run HR in top of 1st, and Sabathia holds the Indians scoreless in the bottom. Good start.

WHY IS ####### KENDRY MORALES STILL ON THIS ####### TEAM????

I'd rather see CC at the plate today.

I thought the Yankees had a quality analytics group.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.

Fun stat for the day:
In his 57th game this year, Joey Votto has 12 RBIs.
In his 5th game for the Phils, Jay Bruce has 11 RBIs.

Like ... both sides of the ball good.

Meanwhile, Bill Hader has somehow only given up 2 runs ...

I didn't realize that most HP umps didn't keep track of the count with a clicker. Do they really rely on the scoreboard op?
   12. rconn23 Posted: June 08, 2019 at 06:10 PM (#5849648)
The Yankees could have really used Keuchel more than any other contender. Their starters simply can't give them any length. They're going to be out of first place after today, and if they want to eventually hang on to a WC spot, they'll have to pay in prospects instead of cash to get a viable starter. Also, their offense is in a complete deep freeze.
   13. The Rare Albino Shrieking Goat of Guatemala. Posted: June 08, 2019 at 06:13 PM (#5849649)
It doesn't help that Boone-y (et. al.) insist not only on starting Morales, but batting him in the middle of the lineup ...

That's what prospects are for. You sell a future need (that might never amount to anything after all) to satisfy a current need.
   17. The Rare Albino Shrieking Goat of Guatemala. Posted: June 08, 2019 at 06:47 PM (#5849657)
Or ... you could just pay ca$h for it.

If the Yankees have a "better" Plan B. than Keuchel, well, I guess we'll see ...

"That's what prospects are for. You sell a future need (that might never amount to anything after all) to satisfy a current need."

Good luck finding a better pitcher than Keuchel at the deadline. Scherzer is a pipe dream and the Yankees likely don't have the pieces - or at least ones they're willing to give up (Torres) - to get him. Bumgarner will be cost prohibitive in prospects and is in his decline phase.

Schwarber ties it up with a homer on the 11th pitch of the AB. That's at least the second time this season that he's gone deep after seeing double-digit pitches.

115mph exit velocity, too. Impressive.

I've missed most of the game so far, but yea... that was a nice at bat.... pfftttt.

clearly foul... not even seeing a reason to debate that one.
   27. Brian C Posted: June 08, 2019 at 09:12 PM (#5849681)
Yeah Rizzo was trolling on that one, I think, pretending it was fair. Even from the live side angle it looked foul.
   28. Brian C Posted: June 08, 2019 at 09:17 PM (#5849682)
Cubs really hitting some long foul balls the last couple innings.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: June 08, 2019 at 09:17 PM (#5849683)
isn't this game right now the movable force vs the resistable object... cubs can't hit with runners in scoring position, and the Cardinals can't get an out with their relief staff(lately....well in may at least) home team has to be favored simply because both of these teams suck right now.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: June 08, 2019 at 09:23 PM (#5849684)
Rosenthal is completely accurate about his assessment of the the Lester signing. Well... I can't say it's the most important free agent signing in Cubs history(not saying it isn't... I just don't know) , but it's been a very good signing.
   31. Brian C Posted: June 08, 2019 at 09:27 PM (#5849685)
Cards seemed to just stop trying at the plate after 2 innings. Lester was up around 60 pitches after two innings and still finished 6 with exactly 100.

not unusual for them... this season and many other seasons... they are really just a one inning team... they show up for one inning and then hope that the rest of the game that was enough.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: June 08, 2019 at 09:29 PM (#5849687)
At least that is the way it feels often, especially when they get an early lead.

Yup, nearly three weeks to the day. I was starting to think of that at bat after pitch 7 or 8.

For once the player can't be blamed for tossing the bat and heading to first prematurely; the home plate ump yelling "ball four!" was audible even on the TV feed.

Even this seems generous - he didn't just choose poorly, the execution on the slide brought to mind Willie Mays Hays coming up 3 feet short of second base.

On the Cubs' official Instagram account, they posted each pitch from the last at-bat. The quick sequencing really emphasized how locked in he was.

   54. cardsfanboy Posted: June 08, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5849711)
which is the way I've felt about this season for most of May... this team just has no ability to inspire confidence. They do a few things right, but for the most part they seem to work as a group... sucking on the same week, or good on the same week... feeding off each other is good, but if no one is showing up, then nobody is going to follow the lead.

   55. cardsfanboy Posted: June 08, 2019 at 10:05 PM (#5849712)
I love the fact that they are actually executing on the argument that TLR and Matheny have made every season in spring training, which is "we plan to steal more" and yet then the season comes and they don't... this team isn't particularly aggressive, just able to identify the right time to steal and doing it... Their defense is also better....but contrary to the claims by the announcers, their two strike hitting isn't any better or more clutchy.... and the team is trying to clutch hit and sacrificing power in the process so we just aren't getting those two strike homeruns etc.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: June 08, 2019 at 10:06 PM (#5849713)
and no... I have no data to back any of that up...just what it feels like as a fan watching the game.
   57. Brian C Posted: June 08, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5849715)
Yeah they didn't even put up a fight against Kyle Ryan, who's kind of Cubs fans' current whipping boy in the bullpen.

running on any Cardinal outfielder seems like a good idea...Bader lacks accuracy... Munoz is the only one worth a crap consistently. And he just doesn't play enough to be a factor.

Good game by the Cubs, but man, didn't seem like the Cards were putting in a ton of effort in that game after the first couple innings.

stat of the day

If you make a home run leaderboard by season, but instaed of using the MLB leader, you use the 10th highest total; which gives a general picture of how easy/hard it was to hit a ton of home runs, Bonds or Sosa or McGwire notwithstanding, you get this:

year tenth best HR
1998 44
1999 42
1996 42
2006 41
2001 41

In 2019, we have 13 players on pace for about 44, and a total of 26 on pace for 40 or more. There is a large group currently at 16 to 18, so I suspect the top 10 will all be above 45.

Apparently, it's 4! Done 8 times, last by the Nats in 2017. totally different set of players, though. 2017 was Brian Goodwin, Wilmer Difo, Bryce Harper, and Ryan Zimmerman, this was Howie Kendrick, Trea Turner, Adam Eaton, and Anthony Rendon.

Broadcast still hasn't mentioned it tied the record.
   91. Howie Menckel Posted: June 09, 2019 at 07:01 PM (#5849830)
Odor just stole home on Oakland's Ryan Buchter.

camera angle was toward plate, so it's a little jarring. pitcher is just on the mound, then a couple of fans stand up and get wide-eyed, then everyone behind home plate does. for a moment it seems like more than just a fan running on the field.

then Buchter throws home, not nearly in time to get a sliding Odor.

pitcher being a southpaw is a key. maybe it should be tried more often. this was with 2 outs in 8th and Rangers trailing 8-5 - so if you try to steal home there, you best not miss.

ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo
The Nationals are the first team in MLB history to hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back HR on multiple occasions (also on July 27, 2017 vs Brewers).

Padres pitcher Craig Stammen allowed 4 HR in a span of 7 pitches. He allowed 3 HR on 1,167 pitches in 2018.

Craig Stammen is still very much beloved by long-time Nats fans, so this is bittersweet (but mostly very sweet).

We must not forget that the Padres are accustomed to giving up 4 consecutive homers, though.

Muncy hits a monster HR into McCovey Cove off Bumgarner in a 1-0 win over Giants today.

Muncy did a bog standard bat flip, nothing shocking. Bumgarner started jawing at him.

after the game, Muncy went with the basic 'hey, if you don't like it, don't throw me a pitch like that.'

Bumgarner went with the 'hey, they say we should get to be ourselves out there - well, that's me being myself.'

Bumgarner went with the 'hey, they say we should get to be ourselves out there - well, that's me being myself.'

"Letting the kids play" (which was cited in this exchange) means the joyous, celebratory antics that we sometimes see. Bumgarner can't understand why his insecure grumpy old man act is unwelcome in an entertainment business like MLB.

ARod: "The difference between a good playoff team and a championship team is the ability to bunt."

Had to rewind the TiVo to make sure he really said that. He's no Chiron.

Someone named MUNCY should not flip a bat or mention anything beyond 'I suck usually !' .

Love, Grumpy Old Man.

Tivo? So you have RCN too, eh?

A-Rod just said that Rizzo has "a third basemen's arm at first base."

Now don't get me wrong, Rizzo can make a throw here and there. But that's just silly.

Now all three of the folks in the ESPN booth are showing that they don't know the rule about blocking the plate.

EDIT: Some producer explained it now to Mendoza, but the producers left A-Rod hanging so he still doesn't get it.

is it? I think some fans like either or both reactions.

Ha. Yes, yes I do. Out of sheer laziness - I've been with them for like 15 years. They keep jacking up the prices, but I don't want to go through the inconvenience of switching cable and internet. I like to be able to count on them just being there.
