   101. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 09, 2019 at 09:14 PM (#5849844)
So, because you all care about my fantasy team: I'm in second place, facing the first place team this week. I'm currently down by just 3 points, 493-490. He has DeJong and Gant, I have Wong. Basically, one of three things needs to happen: 1) DeJong strikes out in his last at-bat, and Wong singles; 2) DeJong does nothing and Wong does something more than a single, i.e. a single and a run/RBI, extra base hit, whatever; or 3) Gant comes in and gets shelled.

Ha. Yes, yes I do. Out of sheer laziness - I've been with them for like 15 years. They keep jacking up the prices, but I don't want to go through the inconvenience of switching cable and internet. I like to be able to count on them just being there.

Same, basically. I'm honestly not sure anyone else would be much cheaper but damn it's gotten expensive. I did call them and threaten them into dropping $30/mo off my bill a few months ago, though. They also upped my internet speed tier, not that internet speeds aren't a gigantic scam.

Yeah, I've done that a few times over the years as well. I tried a few weeks ago, though, and they wouldn't do anything for me. Did you expressly threaten? I've just done so implicitly, saying I'm happy to be a longtime customer, but I'm wondering if they have any promo rates they could give me, etc.

game on espn.... drawback about every time the Cardinals play the Cubs on Sunday...it means I can't watch the game... but considering it's 4-1 right now... guess I'm not missing anything.
   105. Brian C Posted: June 09, 2019 at 09:27 PM (#5849848)
Oh definitely - they had to come through for me or I was gone. I quoted Comcast's intro rates to them but also said that I'm not all that sure I even need cable anymore.

I regret not also asking for six months of Showtime free or something.

Well, no K from DeJong, but no points either. So, Kolten, it's up to you.

You missed another very fine Hendricks performance!

Huh, good to know. Did they put up much of a fight?
   109. Brian C Posted: June 09, 2019 at 09:38 PM (#5849853)
Not really. They started by trying to make me happy with the internet upgrade, but at the same price, and I said no, that wasn't going to do it for me, I needed to reduce the bottom line one way or another. I suggested cutting some channels, but she said that wouldn't really help, and at any rate there wasn't anything I could cut that wouldn't also take away the sports channels that are the only ones I really want to keep.

So she put me on hold and came back with like $10/mo off, and I said again that wasn't good enough. So she did it again and said that she checked some things and could give me some kind of group discount or something, I wasn't real clear on the details and I'm sure it was made up anyway. But it came to $30/mo. I hemmed and hawed for a minute before reluctantly accepting - I was aiming for about $45/mo and I figured that was close enough. She did promise that it wouldn't go up again for at least a year, but at this point it's only 50/50 I'll still live in Chicago in a year anyway. So I guess if I am I get to do it again.

Basically it's like negotiating with a car dealer. Once they sense you're ready to walk, they get a bit more accommodating.

Consumer Reports has done stories on what are the "trigger words" that get you a discount with your cable and any technology provider - and which ones make the company not want you at any price (the latter are easier to guess).

I dated a girl in the late 1980s who was the customer service rep for angry "Snuggle the Fabric Softener Bear" callers. the inside description was "irate callers."

the more normal ones would get an apology and coupons for free boxes, although now that I think about it:
a) how bad can a fabric softener really suck and
b) if it sucks, why do you want more, even for free?

Wong walks...now they have to score him.
   112. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 09, 2019 at 09:47 PM (#5849857)
If he scores, we tie, and I think that means I win because I'm the "home team."
   113. Brian C Posted: June 09, 2019 at 09:50 PM (#5849858)
Yeah, I spent some years working as a movie theater manager, and people's standard response to being disappointed by goods and services is to demand more but for free.

I dunno about "trigger words" but personally I would never cuss out a customer service rep. I know from working in customer service myself that a person can usually get what they want by staying patient and even-toned and civil ... but also persistent.

Just gotta make another pitching change, don'tcha, Joe?
   115. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 09, 2019 at 09:56 PM (#5849860)
Well, I suppose that's what you get when you end up relying on Kolton Wong's bat. ####.

Now on to the 12th.

my word is "relentless."

always always be polite, and make clear that your request - not demand - is reasonable, and at some point in the food chain, that will be recognized. so it might as well be you.

on the other end, I have counseled young'uns that if you don't provide any oxygen to the irate caller going after YOU, it's shocking how little time it takes - exempting sociopaths - for the normal irate person to start regretting their behavior. it's possible for a reasonable person to go from nasty to apologetic in as little as 180 seconds.

BREAKING NEWS: According @CDN37 David Ortiz has suffered a shot wound on an apparent attempted robbery at Dial Bar on Santo Domingo Este, he has being transferred to a hospital and his condition is unknown.

.................

(75K followers but no Twitter blue check mark, which is odd. maybe they don't certify non-US? so those two indicators make things confusing)

English translation of his bio is:

US reporters are reporting it. Enrique Rojas spoke to Papi’s father. Peter Abraham (Boston Globe) says ihe was shot in the leg. No one seems to have info about condition.

are we REALLY down to fans of only 6 teams?

Someone named MUNCY should not flip a bat or mention anything beyond 'I suck usually !' .

Love, Grumpy Old Man.

I realize it's a joke, and Oakland A's fans especially won't want to hear this, but

Last season he hit 35 homeruns in 481 plate appearances, for an OPS+ of 160.
This season he's down a little - before today had 12 homeruns in 249 plate appearances, for an OPS+ of 126.

He's at least becoming a minor star, of the TTO variety.

I just spoke to @dSoldevila who is at the clinic where David Ortiz is currently being treated. Dionisio said me that the attending doctor told him that David was shot in the lower back and the bullet went through and through; he’s currently in surgery.

USA Today is reporting that he is in surgery but in stable condition.

.@CDN37 - A local network in the DR - Tweeted this picture who they identified as one of the doctors that took care of David Ortiz; they say he just informed them that he is out of danger.
