HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

The good news is that the Yankees are activating Luke Voit for tonight’s game. Not sure if his abdominal injury/sports hernia will withstand the rigors of everyday play, but Voit was 8-for-17 with 2 doubles, 2 HRs & 2 BB while rehabbing with Scranton, so he looks ready. The bad news is that Gio Urshela is going on the IL with left groin tightness to make room for Voit on the roster. Seems a bit fuzzy on how long Urshela will be out, but sliding LeMahieu over to 3rd should cover things nicely. Assuming Urshela is back at full strength by the playoffs, the main consequence could be his just missing qualifying for the batting title, where he is only .004 off the lead.

This is an underwhelming Cubs lineup today. Someone tell maddon this game is important.
   4. TomH Posted: August 30, 2019 at 02:27 PM (#5875670)
trivia for the day:

From 1940-1960, his sophomore year thru swan song, Ted Williams had enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title (and other rate-based stats) in 12 different seasons. Some he missed for war, some injury (or rest in old age).

Of those 12 qualifying seasons, how many times did he lead the AL in onbase percentage?

   5. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 30, 2019 at 02:38 PM (#5875672)
Of course the Cubs go double, homer, double to start. Of course.

Castellanos is just something else.

Castellanos.
I'm doing fantasy baseball this year for the first time in more than a decade, and I'm learning how head-to-head can ruin your enjoyment of certain moments. Such as this one.

We are aware of the alleged incident involving Wally Backman. We have spoken with Wally and understand he categorically denies all charges against him. Wally will continue as manager and neither he nor the Long Island Ducks will comment further on this pending legal matter.

Howie, can you explain how you use Twitter? I tried to get into it like 7 years ago and I hated it, because my feed instantly became nothing but Roger Ebert complaining about politics. Recently I tried to get back into it ... some jam band guitarist guy died and in a moment my feed was nothing but a single nutrition expert "liking" dozens of comments from people I don't care about that had posted tributes to this dead guitarist. I try and cull the worst offenders, but the problem seems intractable. Do you just have an amazing tolerance for skipping past dozens of contentless tweets at a time?

Ask your great grandkids to help you, PF.
   13. Howie Menckel Posted: August 30, 2019 at 05:13 PM (#5875750)
11: sure.

- Personally, I unfollow ANYONE who posts about politics, regardless of their place on that spectrum.

- I limit myself to maybe 200 follows, and close to half of those are probably friends, colleagues, ex-colleagues who hardly ever post anything (and who pass Test #1).

- I have found about 20 to 25 people from various occupations who are great at retweeting breaking news without feeling the need to give their own "spin" on it. I don't feel like I need any more of those to keep up.

- Back to Test #1: do an "autopsy" the next time you got bombarded. if there is a lone offender, think for a moment about whether they do this habitually - and what value they really bring to your table.

- also, you can make an informal list of people like that who you can stop following but might provide other value. so once a month or whatever, just jump into their feed and see if there are worthwhile nuggets. the advantage of that is that YOU get to choose when you're willing to skip through potential RT carpet bombing. the late Ebert sounds like he was such a, well, twit - his insights overall were probably great, but I guess he couldn't resist the other stuff.

- Rule #1 is not actually about politics at all - it's about producing your own "Twitter movie." if someone loves politics but hates sports, then weed out those who keep tweeting FB training camp updates and seemingly pitch-by-pitch reactions to a baseball game.

I think making Twitter feeds bearable - even enjoyable - often is not as far away people think. the disappearance of a handful of the worst offenders is liable to make a big difference.
   14. TomH Posted: August 30, 2019 at 07:53 PM (#5875779)
The answer to #4 trivia is: between 1940 and 1960, Ted Williams led the league in OBP EVERY YEAR HE WAS ELIGIBLE; 12 for 12.

True, is his rookie year (1939), he did not. A lousy .436 OBP was not good enough.

Sabathia out of a 1-1 game after 3 innings. YES broadcast suggesting the knee on his landing leg might have been the problem. Could be The End.
   17. rconn23 Posted: August 30, 2019 at 08:14 PM (#5875783)
Yeah, I think that'll probably be it for CC. Great career, but with some possible options for a fifth starter (King, Montgomery, Garcia) I think they'll be fine without him. He really wasn't pitching well at all and it was hard to see him playing a meaningful role in the playoffs.
   18. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 30, 2019 at 08:19 PM (#5875784)
Wow, from a double play to bases loaded no outs. Great use of replay!

And then the A's turn a legit DP, but the go-ahead runs scores. Has anyone ever seen both ends of DP overturned before?
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 30, 2019 at 08:21 PM (#5875786)
EDIT: Don’t recall seeing that, but I assume it happened somewhere. Now, getting three outs overturned would be something.

#Yankees announce CC Sabathia left after three innings (48 pitches) tonight with right knee discomfort.

...........

(he had a great run)

Oh yeah, nice hit by Ramos!!! LGM

I think maybe back in one of Jenna Jameson's early scenes? She was pretty flexible back then.
   26. Howie Menckel Posted: August 30, 2019 at 09:29 PM (#5875806)
Mets tied at 1-1 in the 7th, bags loaded 1 out so here comes PH LHB Luis Guillorme

Phillies genius MSG Kapler counters by bringing in a lefty to face... RHB Rajai Davis.

he replaced the pitcher without Guillorme being introduced as the batter

gets a break when Segura at SS - playing in - catches a rocket liner for the second out

Zombie Mets - looking to "turn" the Phillies this weekend as well - get a 2-run single from Rosario for a 3-1 lead in the 8th.

I don't follow the zombie shows - if the Mets were zombies last month and came back to life, can they come alive again after just losing 6 in a row at home?

there must be rules.
   28. yo la tengo Posted: August 30, 2019 at 09:57 PM (#5875815)
I fear that the 6 in a row effectively ended hopes for postseason. It was a fun run before that and it is nice that games this late in the year feel 'meaningful' though

Quiet night for the Yankees and their fans at the Stadium, as the A's win going away, 8-2.

Brett Anderson pitched 6 strong innings for his first career win against the Yanks - he was 0-6 before tonight, with a 6.86 ERA.
Oakland's new left fielder Seth Brown has 10 hits in his first 5 MLB games, including 3-3 tonight after coming in as a pinch hitter.
   31. Howie Menckel Posted: August 30, 2019 at 10:24 PM (#5875821)
Mets get 10 runs in the 8th + 9th off what I think we call can safely call the "soft underbelly of the Phillies bullpen" to break open a 1-1 game. rotting corpse of Todd Frazier with a 3-run dinger in each inning.

any NL bullpens without a soft underbelly? was SFG before they traded 3 RPs at the deadline
   32. Howie Menckel Posted: August 30, 2019 at 10:46 PM (#5875824)
also, credit to the Diamondbacks for being the first MLB team ever to spend at least 60 straight days either within 2 games above or below .500 - or closer.

but do we credit the guy who wasted his time checking out this stat?

:)

So what was Mattingly thinking when Rendon came to the plate with the tying and winning runs in scoring position and he decided pitching to him was a good idea?

That Juan Soto was up next, and he had no good options.

Howie, can you explain how you use Twitter?

1) Every time you fire up Twitter, and periodically while using it, check at the top to ensure that it is set to "Latest Tweets". If it says "Home" instead, click it and switch it to Latest Tweets. Twitter is RELENTLESS about flipping it back to Home so that they can shove more crap down your throat. Nobody has figured out what all Home does, but nobody likes it.

2) Twitter only shows you what you choose (if in Latest Tweets mode), so Howie's advice is sound. Follow real people, not #brands and people who are just out to sell you something, like Bryce Harper.
