How terribly will JA Happ pitch today? (I don't even have the heart for all caps.)

The use of gas-station sexual-enhancement pills in baseball is so prevalent that MLB sent out a memo warning players that their use could lead to positive PED tests, as at least two players have claimed this year, sources tell ESPN.

I've read a fair bit about an increase of those issues with younger men. Potential causes cited include drugs (both recreational and anti-depressants), and overuse of porn.

Rendon has an excellent chance of becoming the greatest Washington, DC position player in MLB history - if he re-signs with the Nationals - until he is [possibly] overtaken by Juan Soto.

IT'S ALIVE!!!

08.21... Johnny Cueto(elbow) will make his next rehab start on Monday for Triple-A Sacramento.
Spin: Cueto will make at least two starts for Triple-A Sacramento before being ready to join the Giants in September. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy specifically mentioned September 8 as a possible date for Cueto's first start of 2019, which would be against the Dodgers. The right-hander has missed all year while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

For a guy who's overrated, Bryce Harper is awfully damn good.
   19. Bote Man Posted: August 21, 2019 at 09:25 PM (#5873309)
No player is overrated because any fool can look up that player's stats on B-Ref, which exactly rates each player. Harper hit a homer tonight, so he is climbing out of the hole that he dug for himself earlier in the season. Too little, too late.

Meanwhile, Patrick Corbin, who you might recognize is a pitcher, just hit an RBI double with 1 out to tack on yet another run for the Nationals in the 8th inning in Pittsburgh. 9-0 Nationals.

So in the Yankees line up tonight, the lead off guy is the first baseman, and the 8th and 9th hitters are the left fielder and DH, respectively.

I understand why, I understand that it says something good about the other position players, and makes sense given LeMahieu's OBP, but it is still jarring to these ancient eyes.

pandemonium at Citi Field vs Indians.

down 3-2 in the 10th, Rosario double, perfect Panik bunt, IBB to Polar Bear Alonso (um, potential winning run), game-tying forceout by Conforto, walk to Ramos, GW hit by JD Davis - he of the 137 OPS+

Davis jacked up in the in-stadium interview, says, "Hey Mets fans - we did it again, WOOHH!"

lusty cheers from a packed house. then adds, "We had that New York swagger, we didn't quit - we didn't quit!"

crowd goes wild. MGR Calloway said before the game that some of his old Indians buddies were telling him based on last night, "What the hell is this, anyway?"

AJ Puk's major league debut.
6'7" lefty hitting 98-99 with a pitch that Gameday classified as a slider. Presumably it is not calibrated for his stuff yet, but it did seem like a pretty nasty pitch. Unfortunately, he was only able to get one out of his three batters out.
Liam Hendriks gets out of the jam, now trying to complete the 5-out save in the 9th.

Tim Melville:
Former B/B- prospect in that famous Royals class from 2009-10
7 bad and injury plagued years in the minors before his debut in 2016
Life time ML stats before today: 0-2 14.2 IP . 11.05 ERA

Spends 2018 with the Orioles AAA club and pitches to a 5.33 ERA, never getting called up... by the Orioles
ZiPS projects a 6.54 ERA for 2019. This wasn't good enough to compete for the 2019 Os staff so he starts the year in independent ball, then pitches badly for Rockies AAA.

This guy must really love baseball to keep on keepin on. He's a 29 year old bad innings eater in AAA.

Today the Rockies starter (Gray) goes down and they call Melville up to fill in. 7.0IP 2H 1R. An RBI single and a highlight reel RBI bunt on a safety squeeze. Over 11 years after being drafted he gets his first major league win! And with more RBIs than runs given up! Against a solid lineup too.

Congrats Tim! What a journey and what a great story.

I realize people don’t really care about pitcher wins anymore, but man has Walker Buehler gotten screwed by his bullpen this year.

That's exactly why! Pitcher Wins don't tell you that much because factors outside his control can turn a W into an L, so it's a very misleading stat. That happened to Strasburg just the other day: pitched a gem, got screwed for all his efforts.

Justin Verlander: Big baby?

The Houston Astros blocked a Detroit Free Press reporter from attending Justin Verlander’s postgame media session on Wednesday night, violating Baseball Writers’ Association of America protocol and possibly the MLB collective bargaining agreement.

The Astros blocked Free Press writer Anthony Fenech at Verlander’s request, according to Gene Dias, Astros vice president of communications. Dias said Verlander was “adamant” that he would not speak to any credentialed media while Fenech was present.

Once inside, Fenech approached Verlander, who said: “I’m not answering your questions.” When asked to comment on Wednesday’s loss, Verlander walked away.

“Blocking a working reporter from doing his job is unprofessional, disappointing and intolerable,” Free Press executive editor Peter Bhatia said. “We will be protesting to MLB and the Astros.”
