I don't even think the reverse jinx will work tonight. Luke Voit is the Yankees' DH. Luke. Voit.

Cards take 3 of 4 from the Rox as Wade Davis blows a 2-1 lead in the 9th, Jose Martinez with the walkoff hit. Rox should have WON 3, they also blew a 4-0 7th-inning lead in the first game.

Nice come-from-behind walkoff win for the Cardinals (their second of the series), 3-2 over the Rockies, as they take three out of four.

Now 9-7 (91-win pace!) with Schildt after going 47-46 (an 82-win pace) with Matheny.

Sonny Gray to the pen. Gray for Chatwood is still on the table...we can even throw in Duensing if you want.

Not quite - they blew a 4-1 lead in the 7th, which is still kinda bad.

Wade Davis hasn't been the disaster that Bryan Shaw has been, but he's still nowhere near worth his contract, and below average as a closer at this point. The Rockies do some things well, but their big-ticket free agents are routinely terrible. They might be better off if they never signed another free agent - and certainly not another big-money free-agent reliever.

MOLINA SUSPENDED FOR P.E.D. USE!!

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
Pitcher Marcos Molina, a former Mets top prospect whom the team released last month, has been suspended for the rest of the year after testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance Clostebol. Molina had not hooked on with another organization.

If he's not playing for another (any?) organization, then who is suspending him?

Just 96° at the Ballpark, below normal for Aug. 2nd. I am here to see the Machado-less Orioles. I have at least heard of their starting pitcher, Andrew Cashner. The Rangers counter with Yovani Gallardo. I generally don’t wear team gear, but I own a Gallardo T-shirt from his last stint here (in throwback baby blue) so figured I’d be a good sport & wear it.

How humid is it in Dallas typically? It was 88 and humid today in Maine and that felt pretty awful.

Rangers v Orioles...I would imagine finding a decent seat won't be too hard.

As fun as it is to go to games when your team is in contention, I actually found going to these late season games between 2 teams totally out of it kind of fun. You could pretty much sit where you want, walk around a bit, spread out a bit and just enjoy the placid atmosphere of a ballgame punctuated by the occasional unpredictable moments of excitement. You just never know when you'll see a cycle or 3 homer game or something kind of cool. A real nice way to spend an arvo or early evening.

DFW is nowhere near as humid as Houston, or Florida. When it was really hot here a couple of weeks ago (>105) we had heat indexes below the temperature, because it got so dry.

08.02: Mets assistant GM John Ricco said David Wright (back, shoulder) is "starting to come up
against the clock" if he hopes to make it back by the end of the season. (Wright continues to work out, though there's still no timetable for him to begin a minor league rehab assignment. Once considered the face of the Mets' franchise, injuries have derailed Wright's career to the point where it's easy to forget he's still in the league. The 35-year-old hasn't logged a major league at-bat since May of 2016.)

(also, Francisco Franco remains dead.)

Not the best timing to play the Red Sox when Judge & Sanchez are on the DL, but the schedule is the schedule, and they'll just have to do their gritty, gutsy best. Hopefully, everyone is healthy for the playoffs no matter how the regular season ends up.

You know the funny thing is if the score were 4-0 Boston's way, the only NY fan posting would be the unusually zany AT-T guy.

But I'm here to take my lumps and well, you can't win 'em all.

Alas, no, but he's sure as hell lived a lot longer..

Rendon hits a sharp line drive that smacks 2B umpire Andy Fletcher in his left ribal area. He's OK, although it had to have stung. Deivi consults with HP ump about positioning his base runners and they send Adam Eaton back to 3B on the deflected ball. Bases loaded for Mr. April, Bryce Harper.

EDIT: Bryce walks to force across the 5th run of the game. Tyler Mahle's reputation precedes and succeeds him as he gets the hook in the 2nd inning with 2 outs.

I went to a Mets-Rays game at Citi Field recently. for $6, got a pretty decent seat with access to a nice club lounge. seat would go for $50 to $75 if the Mets were good/great. no traffic getting into or out of the parking lot, of course. Eovaldi had a no-hitter into the 6th or 7th, too.

Here is one of the many reasons why I dislike the DH. Voit is absolutely, clearly a better defender than Bird, yet because Bird is the better hitter the team elects to let him play first base while the lesser hitter is the DH.... all to keep the better hitter happy.

Yeah, but how many games like that do the Mets have $6 seats like that? With the Nats you had pretty much every game except Opening Day or when the Yankees were in town. Even including the Yankees, the average crowd in Washington back then was about 7,000. Lots of room to roam and spread out.

It was the laziness and ease of the dog days of the late season that was the best aspect. Sure the seats were cheap, but the pace and atmosphere was like lying on a beach with a summer breeze. It was just such a enjoyable experience. You'd go with a few mates and just run around everywhere like you owned the place. Occasionally back in the 70's we'd catch a Nolan Ryan start and he'd K like 12 guys and BB 6 or something, it was just a hoot.

Who is he going to pinch hit for him later in the game, and what position does that pinch hitter play? The Yankees only have three bench hitters... Neil Walker who can play first base probably on par with Bird, their backup catcher, and Shane Robinson(much inferior hitter, bats from same side as Voit)... I'm not really seeing any situation in which Voit is going to be pinched hit for and that it's going to hurt their defense.

Edit: and looking at the Yankees roster, I just found out that Shane Robinson is still in baseball.

Great, bringing Cessa in. Just brilliant.

Or what? Burn out the bullpen? Somebody has to take the bullet tonight and soak up the innings. Cessa's the right call here, however much it sucks (and it does).

Kay says Sheffield had a start today, so not him.

Did not know. Blergh.

There's always Piper.

Rowdy Roddy?

Sure, throw him out there, can't be worse than Sonny ...

IT BEGINS!!!

These two Didi shots are the only HRs to lefties Johnson has given up all season.

Fine, so now who starts on Saturday?

Severino better revert to his June form tomorrow night, or there could really be a holocaust, small "h" for political pedants.

Right now it's doubtful that the Yankees have a single pitcher who's capable of giving them more than 5 good innings. It all comes down to the starters.

(Shots is probably generous, since I don’t think either had particularly impressive exit velocities, did they?)

The only upside to this disaster is that I can record a 10:00 movie without worrying about missing anything I'd want to see. You takes your consolations where you finds them.

they're not - they are the two best teams in baseball per W-L record.

What measurement is there that wouldn't peg these two teams as two of the three best in baseball?

You need a better DVR.

How is it that Brian Johnson has 11Ks in 5 innings whilst giving up 5 runs. That NY offense really is feast or famine.

Sox get the run back, maintain the 6 run lead.

Cone issuing manhood challenges, O’Neill saying this needs to be a wake-up call, Kay saying yesterday should have been a wake-up call ... the YES booth is all wannabe Freud right now.

Safe. They're not going to overturn.

Got it right. Wow.

Are the Cubs the best sliding team in addition to best baserunning (and maybe defense)? I say yes.

Sonny Whitson, someone from AAA, Rowdy Roddy Pipper, I don't know?

If Severino was pitching as he was 6 weeks ago, I'd have confidence the bullpen might get rested tomorrow, but he isn't and I think it's going to be needed, so don't burn it out in this lost cause.

Hand, foot & mouth disease and Sonny's start yesterday have really put this series behind the 8-ball ...
