Whew. This stretch against San Diego and Kansas City is where they really need to pull ahead.

Jerry Crasnick, @jcrasnick

Talk to people around the game, and Ben Cherington's name keeps coming up as a likely top candidate in the #Mets search for a Sandy Alderson replacement. Jared Porter of the #Dbacks is another guy who's generating some buzz.

Tonight’s Nats-Reds game has been postponed. Split doubleheader tomorrow. 1:05 pm and 7:05 pm ET

It's currently not raining at Nats Park, but there's more weather on the way. There was an imminent threat of a dam breach near Lynchburg, Virginia late last night from all the rain, so that whole region has had more than its fair share of rain.

This leaves me another 18 hours to fret over a Gio Gonzalez start. Gee, thanks!!

Freeman does what good hitters claim simply can't be done: smacks a ground ball past the vacated 3B bag for a single, against The Shift.

But it can't be done.

Ohtani with his first homer on the road, an opposite field job that looked like a short fly, but just kept going, and going, and going....

Johan Camargo says "Come on, GO!" and puts the Barves on the board 1-0 in the top of the 2nd inning at Citi Field. I thought this deGrom kid was supposed to be good??

Severino has somehow gone from "as good as Gator in '78" to "as bad as Gator in 2018" in 6 weeks.

Strewth.

[edit] This is going to be a looooooooooong weekend.

Kinsler after the SB and run - replay showed him grimacing crossing the plate. So Mookie to 2B!?! Pearce to RF, Moreland to 1st. Weird.
   119. Jay Seaver Posted: August 03, 2018 at 07:40 PM (#5720620)
Mookie can still pick it, which is cool, but the full-time substitute for Pedroia doing down is Not Good.

Took Costas most of the AB to find Betts at 2nd, thought he was out of game. What happened to Kinsler?

EDIT: Is Betts using an outfielders glove at 2nd base? Looks big.
   121. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: August 03, 2018 at 07:42 PM (#5720622)
I don’t love Mookie at second. You could see him being uncomfortable on that first grounder. Honestly I’d be tempted to tell him that he should not turn any double plays.
   122. Chip Posted: August 03, 2018 at 07:42 PM (#5720623)
This is all about trying to stay away from Bogaerts except in emergency, I guess? Lin got sent back down, right?

Mets (yes the METS!) just turned a nifty double play. With Acuña running from 1B on the pitch, Albies hit a sharp grounder that was snagged by the diving 2Bman Reyes. Throw to 1B got Albies, then Bautista made a quick throw to 3B to nab Acuña sliding in to end the inning. I never woulda thunk it.
   127. Chip Posted: August 03, 2018 at 07:51 PM (#5720629)
Michael Kay and PeteAbe both noting that Mookie takes grounders at 2B & SS during every Red Sox BP.

Had to pause the game for real life, came back, and BOOM! Ohtani with his second homer of the game, first multi-homer game of his big league career! First one was an impressive opposite-field shot, the second was just your average mammoth 443-foot homer to right-center.

   140. Chip Posted: August 03, 2018 at 08:44 PM (#5720659)
Porcello with a 1-hitter through 6, the Andujar HR his only blemish, and 12 straight outs since then.
   141. cardsfanboy Posted: August 03, 2018 at 08:50 PM (#5720661)
tootblan fielding and running play right there... men on first and second no outs and O'Neil hits a sky high ball to the outfield that the centerfielder immediately signals to his team he can't see it. His left fielder comes over and does a noble try to get the ball, but it hits the ground..... Cardinal runner on second advances to third, takes a wide turn, and Ozuna who was on first, runs through second to third and realizes too late that the runner on third held up, and was caught in a quick run down.
   142. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 08:53 PM (#5720663)
oy, that was hard to watch, especially considering that the cards are finding their stroke against this pitcher and have started scoring runs ...
   143. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 08:56 PM (#5720665)
ozuna and molina chatting in the dugout ... it looks like ozuna is defending himself and molina has this look on his face like 'yeah, yeah ...' and avoiding saying anything critical ...

I think the Yankees need not bother with making the playoffs. It's over. They are just outmatched in every facet of the game right now. Aaron Judge coming back isn't going to solve all of that.

18 straight outs.

The only other baserunner besides Andujar’s HR was the Gardner HBP (in an 0-2 count) to start the game, and he was erased on a DP.

He's always annoyed me. It took him 20 years to get his farm system to produce anything, and he's still treated like some genius.

Recently, he got rid of an above average manager, and replaced him with a moron in order to feed his ego.

In any case, 100 wins and a one-and-done playoff game, is much more painful than 86 wins, and missing the playoffs.

[159] It's not one beating, the Yankees are just bad now. They have zero reliable SPs. Their best hitter is out. They're terribly managed, and their fundamentals are poor.

They're still playing the corpse of Neil Walker. If that isn't an indictment of Cashman and Boone, I don't know what is.

How does a playoff contender give 250 PAs to a guy with a 226/307/312 line, who bad at D?

I get where snapper is coming from. I’ve been there and as a fan it’s incredibly frustrating. The Yankees are very good and missing some key players and I expect them to get going sooner than later. But they are playing poorly right now but that happens. You’re not as good as you look when you win and not as bad as you look when you lose.

AL EAST
Red Sox 77-34
Yankees 68-40, so trail Red Sox by 7.5 games

AL WILD CARD
Yankees 68-40
Athletics 64-46, so 5.5 out of hosting wild card game
Mariners 63-46, so trail Yankees by 6 games

Yankees could win the division OR miss the playoffs, I suppose. but.......

I think the Sox are probably going to go through a week where they're not hitting or pitching either. The difference is that they are building up the kind of lead in the division where it doesn't really matter in the end, unless that week is in October.

And it's a management failure when it does, unless the guy is a really good player having an inexplicable bad year. In all three cases, Walker, Beltran at 39, and Gonzalez at 35, the plug needs to be pulled, much, much earlier.

Of course, both the Astros and Dodgers had huge division leads early on.

Well, as I've said, both here and over at BronxBanter, I don't know that swapping Joey Joe Joe Girardi Jr. for Boone-y was a positive, but ... after the 1st inning shitshow, Severino looked more like himself again for the rest of the game.

This team isn't as good as the Sox, but in the post-season, that's not the true measure.

I can be sanguine and yet not call for a fainting couch ...

179 - The issue about Severino is the big one. It’s not a good rotation to start with and if Severino can’t straighten out that’s a significant problem for them.

Put Judge/Sanchez back in there, straighten out Severino and they are fine. The one guy who has looked terrible for a few days now is Torres. I know he’s just off the DL and he’s moving like a guy who isn’t 100%.

Rick Porcello is not that good.

The Yankees definitely made him look better than he actually is, but he won the Cy TWO YEARS AGO. He's very good, and would be in the top three in anyone's rotation.

Concession accepted.

No concession. He's been awful. He should have been gone two months ago.

Yeah, that's stupid. Rooting for a team that never has a losing season

If the team is mediocre, I can just tune it out. And really, there's little difference between 84 wins and 76 wins.

Alex Cora was asked about the decision to put Mookie at second (after Cora was ejected). Cora said “I had nothing to do with the game.” Presumably his pants are now on fire and his nose is growing.

Joe Girardi finishes cooking dinner, sits down, pops open a beer and turns on the television, content to catch the last 2 hours of Yanks-Red Sox ...and sees Pawn Stars on WPIX.

About the ejection: “I wasn’t very polite.”

“I apologized to my family. My daughter called me to talk about it.”

Yes, yes, yes ... he's just managed an OPS+ of 158 in the last month ... truly awful ... FIRE HIM INTO THE SUN!!!

Concession accepted.

DL for Kinsler probably. Cora saying it’s not a big deal but sounds like they need to make a roster move.

And it's a management failure when it does, unless the guy is a really good player having an inexplicable bad year. In all three cases, Walker, Beltran at 39, and Gonzalez at 35, the plug needs to be pulled, much, much earlier.

I wouldn't describe Neil Walker as a really good player, but as recently as last year he was at least average, and was above average for most of his career. This is the first bad year of his career since his rookie cup of coffee.

But going through the other, non Yankee playoff teams from last year:

Ben Zobrist, 79 OPS+,

Jason Kipnis, 80 OPS+. Bradley Zimmer, 78.

Deven Marerro 54

Gregor Blanco, 77

Jason Werth, 84

Ian Desmond 72
