dumbass baserunning.... Carpenter is nailed at the plate by a one bouncer up the middle on a play that no way should he have run....the announcers are saying "great throw got him.".....dude a 12 year old would have toasted him, it wasn't particularly close, it wasn't a long throw, it was a dumb ass send.

deGrom slapped around by Braves for 2 runs in 8 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 9 K

his ERA soars to 1.85 and his record dips to 5-7 in a 2-1 loss

hey, they scored a run this time - he has nothing to complain about!

I wouldn't describe Neil Walker as a really good player, but as recently as last year he was at least average, and was above average for most of his career. This is the first bad year of his career since his rookie cup of coffee.

I wouldn't say Walker is a "really good player", but one thing to keep in mind is that the start of this season was the first time he had to be a "bench" player. Since he's been more or less starting every day (due to injuries) he's been a much better performer ...
   205. salvomania Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:52 PM (#5720742)
Matt Carpenter is the slowest wiry guy I've ever seen. Huge lead off second, with two outs, thrown out at home on a soft single to right.

I counted off 3+ seconds from when the ball is hit to when he's rounding third... he was out at the plate by a mile, didn't even bother sliding.

I obviously understand the limitations of batting average, but it's still shocking to see this from the box score. Seasonal batting averages of the 8 Mets starters:

.246
.203
.226
.209
.248
.190
.238
.225

3 guys under .210. No one over .250.

Is this 2018 or 1918?
   209. cardsfanboy Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:55 PM (#5720746)
Cardinals have been screwed over completely this game by batting Molina second, but it has nothing to do with the predictable double plays you would expect but instead the rare strikeout and lack of clutch.... If Yadier is Yadier in even one of his at bats this game, the Cardinals probably have a 3 run lead instead of a 1 run deficit.
   210. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:55 PM (#5720747)
or misplay a ball and still make up for it. .... that was not a good play.

hey, he still covers a lot of ground.
   211. rconn23 Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5720748)
"The Yankees definitely made him look better than he actually is, but he won the Cy TWO YEARS AGO. He's very good, and would be in the top three in anyone's rotation."

I mean, come on. I know everything is coming up roses for the Sox and Porcello can be good, but the Cy Young season was the exception, not the rule. He has a career 4.24 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. I know those aren't always the true measure of a pitcher. But he's mainly just been ... eh, for his career.
   212. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5720749)
The last Yankee team to win 76 games had Scott Sanderson in the rotation. I doubt many Yankee fans remember what that felt like.
   213. Chip Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5720750)
Jason Mastrodonato, Boston Herald:

Alex Cora was asked if the beef with Yankees is over. “I don’t know, we scored four runs in less than six innings (off Severino), is that a quality start?”

Then he walked out of the press conference. (He had already answered questions for about ten minutes.)
   214. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 09:57 PM (#5720751)
agree with 209. he's really gone up there swinging away all night.

Chip - I watched the press conference. They had asked about the pitch several times and I think he was sick of hearing about it.

This is the reason why I think it's idiotic to bat Molina second behind Carpenter. You are taking the two slowest guys you have on the team, two pretty good hitters and lumping them together to pretty much guarantee double plays....now that hasn't actually happened yet, but that is more small sample size issue than it is that it makes sense to bat Yadier second.... bat him third, I'm perfectly fine with that.. bat O'Neil/Bader/Ozuna second....someone with a hint of speed to reduce the number of dp's that will happen with Carpenter on base.

I'm upset that they don't have a stat tracking how many times a runner is forced out, and doubled off.

I remember what it was like to watch the likes of Oscar Azocar, Wayne Tolleson, Lee Guetterman* and Alvaro Espinoza take the field, so yah, I do ...

**I also gave him points for having the same last name as one of my favorite characters from "Baa Baa Black Sheep" ... YMMV

Rick Porcello is the 1st @RedSox pitcher to throw and win a complete game at Fenway against the Yankees since Roger Clemens in '91.

He threw 86 pitches. Prior to tonight, the last pitcher to throw a CG (9+ IP) on fewer than 90 pitches: Rick Porcello on Sept. 19, 2016 vs O's.

The Red Sucks might be the best team baseballwise, but humanly, they are worse than Saruman Orcs !

   222. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:06 PM (#5720761)
here we go again. first two batters get on base.

whew, that could have been another big TOOTBLAN ... ozuna keeps running on the single, but he beats the throw and o'neill takes second.

and a groundout ties the game!

   223. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:08 PM (#5720762)
C R A P ... how many times are we gonna get thrown out at home?!?

geez, we've had the bases loaded SIX times tonight ..

this game is hilarious, and yet the announcers have instead decided to focus on giving the manager a blow job because O'neil and Ozuna did exactly what they would have done in the previous at bat, whether the manager was Shildt, Matheny, Larussa, Herzog, Torre, Rapp or Southworth.

There is literally not one single time in the history of the Cardinals, in which that hit by O'neil would have had any different results based upon coaching....man on first a 5 bouncer to the outfielder, he makes it to third, the outfielder tries to throw him out and O'neil moves to second... this is a routine play that the Cardinals have been doing for the past decade.... Cardinal announcers" the aggressive nature of the Cardinals created a second and third no outs situation. "

and now that O'Neil was toasted at the plate on a ####### stupid run on contact play "well that is the nature of the game...nothing wrong with that decision."

   225. cardsfanboy Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:10 PM (#5720764)

if it was Ichiro in the outfield, maybe, but not anybody who plays for the Pirates.... that was a gimme play.

   228. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:15 PM (#5720768)
argh, that was a very frustrating inning.

cfb, i'm not sure what you're getting at by your 224. if you're saying we keep following a good decision with a dopey one all night, i agree.

huh, dexter fowler being carried off. it looks like a leg injury.

and now molina comes out.

wtf.
   229. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:18 PM (#5720770)
15 LOB.

bader is out. wait, molina is at first.

according to the announcers, we have no bench players. great. if we go to extras this could really suck.

actually i guess this game has sucked all night anyway.
   230. cardsfanboy Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:19 PM (#5720771)
..... I think that was some horrible decision making there by the Cardinals manager, but it was a quick decision, really can't blame him, but Bader really should still be in the game, and stop worrying about the potential double switch or whatever it was he decided to do.....
   231. cardsfanboy Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:21 PM (#5720773)

I'm saying that sending Ozuna was the play that every third base coach in baseball history does on that play, unless it was someone like Ichiro out there. There was nothing special or lucky about that Ozuna send, it was a play that is a routine obvious decision by coaches all the time. There is no Pirate outfielder that would have made than an out more than 3% of the time, it was a safe send.

He has a 1.09 ERA in those games.

Cardinal announcers bending over backwards to support Shildt's screwup...
   234. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:25 PM (#5720779)
announcers suggesting schildt made the changes before he knew fowler was hurt cuz oquendo was rushing to the dugout at the end of the inning. if the thinking is that schildt was making the changes assuming he still had fowler i guess that makes sense.

i dunno ... like i said, this has been a messed up game all night.
   235. cardsfanboy Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:26 PM (#5720781)
For the record I don't actually have a problem with Shildt, just have a problem with the over the top love being given to him by the announcers, it's like he's Whiney Herzog reincarnated. He can do no wrong in their book because they think he's going to manage exactly the way they think the game should be managed, which is funny, given the fact of his history and the fact that he's mostly an analytical guy, something that they are clearly bagging on all the time.

   236. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:29 PM (#5720782)
Severino asked about the pitch up and in to Mookie: “no, nothing to it. If I’m going to throw at someone I’m not going to miss.” That’s a pretty good line.

And mistakes happen like that, TLR made a boneheaded move his first few weeks in regards to the double switch, Matheny did a few bonehead moves when he first started(and the press never forgot it) That is the learning curve of the speed of the major league game and weird situations... but the fact that the announcers are going out of their way to find a way to defend him, instead of saying "it was a mistake, it happens" which is what they would have done previously, is just a bit weird.

   238. salvomania Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:34 PM (#5720785)
Tough night for Hicks---two hits were ground balls that a more-competent fielding team would have turned into outs.
   239. phredbird Posted: August 03, 2018 at 10:35 PM (#5720787)

crap, i was about to turn off the game when it was 6-2, but stuck around, only to see my fandom rewarded with this cluster fudge of a game ...

cfb, do you think schildt is sticking around? is he representative of the new managerial template?

cfb, do you think schildt is sticking around? is he representative of the new managerial template?

I think that if he can get the Cardinals to finish within one game of the wild card, he's going to be given a two year contract.... His track record has some merit, and his salary has some value... I don't think the Cardinals have any intention of getting a big name manager, regardless how much the press pushes for Girardi.

But he is a template for the Cardinals front office of a guy that they want, a guy who balances the player side with the analytics side, the problem is that in his brief time in the major's he's thrown out his analytic concept, in order to play for the "win".... In the minors he had marching orders, now he still has marching orders, but he knows that if the team exceeds expectations against those orders he'll keep his job regardless.

At no point in time this season, was a 6-2 game out of hand for the Cardinals, nothing has changed in that regard.

The Best Team Ever, 106-45, which was unlucky; the best team run differential ever. Too bad Lou was sick, they might have been OK.
Gehrig retired, so they had a 1B with an OPS of 689 while the rest of the non-pitchers OPSed about 870. Dominated the WS too, only thei0r fourth title in a row.

Says the guy who observers say has struggled with fastball command during his recent 4-start slump. He probably _was_ aiming for Mookie’s noggin.
   248. Howie Menckel Posted: August 03, 2018 at 11:24 PM (#5720805)

per post 199:

the Yankees from 1960-66 gave this player these amount of PA for this OPS+

1960 - 507 for a 67 (lost WS)
1961 - 704 for a 67 (won WS)
1962 - 754 for a 101 (won WS)
1963 - 668 for a 76 (lost WS)
1964 - 728 for a 73 (lost WS)
1965 - 713 for a 74
1966 - 648 for a 79

and then at age 30, leadoff 2B Bobby Richardson walked away from baseball to pursue a career in the ministry. wait, "walked" is not a good word - he never had more than 37 of those in a season.

Dexter Fowler to the Dl with a broken foot... There was no need to trade Pham, both of them broke their foot within this week. The outfield of Bader, O'Neil and Ozuna is apparently happening no matter what anyone tries to do. (with Martinez as a fourth)

In his 1st MLB game, CF Ramón Laureano races in to catch a fly ball, but holds short to watch Lowrie lunge helplessly for it as the ball falls onto the grass. Kid's gotta learn to take charge out there, that's his ball to catch.

And Laureano wins in on the nth inning (n = some large number, I lost track). Looked like it would be a rough first game but between the extra-inning outfield assist and the walk off hit it turned out pretty good.

I wonder how many people have a walk off hit for their first hit. Gotta think that’s fewer than the number who homer for it.
