Long HR to CF by Luke Voit (#20) puts Yankees up 2-0 in 1st @ Detroit.

Some news on the pitching front:
Marly Rivera, ESPN Writer

Aaron Boone on Dellin Betances: "With Trenton (Yankees' Double-A affiliate) losing last night, that means there will definitely be a Game 4, so he'll pitch again tomorrow for Trenton in Bowie."

Marly Rivera, ESPN Writer

Yankees expect Luis Severino to make his first start of the season on Tuesday, September 17 vs. the Angels. Severino, who has been on the IL with right shoulder rotator cuff inflammation and a lat strain, last pitched in the majors in Game 3 of the 2018 ALDS, when he gave up 6 runs in three innings of a 16-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Jordan Montgomery likely to pitch on Sunday, too.

What's a realistic expectation for Severino in the playoffs? 3 IP as a "super-opener"? Maybe you pair him with Happ as a synthetic SP to get you 6-7 IP?

I'd say with Sevy you could top out at 4 innings - five if he's really economical - if he gets lengthened out enough. But it's probably best to keep him as limited as possible to maximize his velocity. He topped out at 98 last night.
   6. Jose is Absurdly Unemployed Posted: September 12, 2019 at 02:24 PM (#5878694)
The issue for guys coming back from injury usually seems to be more control than velocity.
   7. rconn23 Posted: September 12, 2019 at 02:25 PM (#5878695)
You really have to wonder what Detroit was thinking not trading Boyd at the deadline when his value was never going to be higher.

The Yankees certainly hope he’ll be available in some role, but Severino will have to demonstrate his ability before he’s more than just another bullpen option. Severino could get 3 starts, maybe going 3, 4, and then 5 innings in a best case scenario. If Tanaka, German, Paxton & even Happ, look good down the stretch, maybe the option of 2-inning bullpen guy (think 1996 Mariano Rivera) would be more appealing. Depends on what Boone & Rothschild see.

You gotta respect the way the Mets keep battling. They've had more than their share of soul crushing losses. The team could have easily packed it in any number of times.

This. I give you this: Aaron Boone has learned nothing from last year's playoffs and will, without doubt, blow at least one game leaving a starter in long past expiration date.

It is 4.5 if the home team is leading. I remember something from the Bill James New Historical Baseball Abstract that the fewest batters that a pitcher could face and get a complete game is 13. Visiting pitcher pitches 4 perfect innings and then gives up a go ahead hr to the first home batter of the 5th, and then rain delay and game called by rain. This has happened 1 time in MLB history, but, I cannot remember who accomplished it.

edit: I remember! Dick Drago, and here is the game: 4 inning complete game
   29. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: September 12, 2019 at 03:26 PM (#5878732)
The oddity is when the visiting team takes the lead in the top of the inning. If it was tied entering, say, the 6th inning, and the visitors score in the top half, I think the home team has to bat to make it official.

though, looking at that box score I am misremembering exactly what Bill said, because the HR happened in the top of the 1st, and is the only baserunner allowed by Drago in the game. So, it is still 13 batters, and he was credited with a complete game.

I hadn't remembered that game, but when I look at the box score I see it also set a record for the shortest official game in MLB history: 48 minutes. I'd always thought that this game was the shortest, but now I know better. (And yes, I know. But still.)

Haven't seen much of him there. He's been in LF or at 2B 95+% of the time, and now, with Frazier hot, we may not see it again.

You've got to assume Frazier is gone next year. If McNeill can play 3B, and Cano can be the strong side at 2B, that solves a bunch of lineup issues.

Agreed. Plus they've got to find playing time for JD Davis, somehow, if Cespedes comes back. And of course, there's the mythical Jed Lowrie.

Crew sweeps the AAA team. Would be pretty cool if the Milwaukee Nine has some success against the evildoers this weekend. Yelich missing may not be an issue given that his 8 dingers and 19 rbi against Cards this season were all at Miller. Yelich apparently not a fan of Busch.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

That's assuming that Stanton will hit the ground running, which is a pretty big assumption.

LeMahieu gets out of his funk with his third hit this game. German pitches great in long relief, Sanchez, Encarnacion both hurt. The ebbs and flows are a little much today.

Well, just don't get depressed about it, that would be selfish of you ...

Good thing Gio went deep, now 6-4 with the tying run at the plate.

Sigh.

Well, a DH sweep is nice, but at what cost?

Yankees have played 7 Doubleheaders this year.

They split one with the Mets.

They swept the other 6.

Fun fact: One year when the Yanks won the World Series, they were swept in 8 doubleheaders and had the worst overall doubleheader record in the AL. Only the Mets were worse.

In the talk about rain shortened games... when I was a kid I knew the rule pretty well, it made perfect sense, but over the years with the improvements made on the fields ability to become playable again, and people not wanting a rain out... they have changed the rules at the major league level, and now I don't remotely know it at all. There are suspended games which have become much more common than they were in the past etc....

yet at the same time, the Cardinals, in midst of a hot streak, lost a game to the Brewers that was very winnable because it was called.(and within the rules I grew up with) .. so I don't know the rules anymore...The rules on whether to suspend a game or call it a complete game has changed a significant amount over the past ten or so years.

Bored with giving up home runs, Baltimore gives up a rare two-run strikeout.

Juan Soto 2-run HR makes it 10-3 Nationals over Twins. That’s #34 of the year, 56th of his career, tying Tony Conigliaro for 2nd place on the Age-20 Leaderboard, and Soto’s 3 RBI gives him 175 for his career tying Ty Cobb (TY COBB!) for 3rd.

A's take 3/4 in Houston, moving into WC1.
Won 6/8 against Houston, and 4/6 against NYY in the last month.
Now just need to avoid letdowns against Texas(6), KC(3), LAAA(2), Seattle(4)
