HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

stat of the day

The 4 MLB teams with most batters PA vs southpaw pitching are all in the NL West; all except the Padres.

Reason? NOT that they all have lots of RH batters. Obviously there ARE many LHP among those teams.

DMCj @dougchapinjr
Not-at-all fun fact: 23 more losses, and Davey Martinez will equal Dusty's two-year total.

I bet we get there by the end of June at the latest.
   4. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: May 22, 2019 at 02:28 PM (#5844680)
I absolutely love Counsell's decision to burn Braun with runners on second and third and two out in the third. Not likely to get more bang for your buck at any other point.

How bad can Mark Canha be at defense for Oakland to put him at DH and leave Robbie Grossman in left field?

Michael Lorenzen is in for the Reds right now.

This year he has pitched in 21 games. He’s also played 7 games in the outfield. And he’s come on as a pinch runner 7 times (and has stolen 2 bases). And he’s been used as a pinch hitter twice.

He might be my new favorite player.

Just two days after Giancarlo Stanton began a minor league rehab assignment, the Yankees announced that Stanton has been returned to the injured list since the slugger is experiencing left calf tightness.

Expect Nottingham to go to the IL with a bum left knee after that slide into the unpadded part of the side wall.

How bad can Mark Canha be at defense for Oakland to put him at DH and leave Robbie Grossman in left field?

It's baffling - but Canha doesn't really have a position now so maybe they're thinking he'll be a "pure" DH while Davis is out.

Canha is also apparently the backup CF and RF, too, which is also baffling.
I'm glad Laureano and Piscotty haven't missed much time.
   10. Bote Man Posted: May 22, 2019 at 06:46 PM (#5844763)
Nimmo to the IL with neck stiffness (sounds like more, tho); Rajai Davis up to replace him. Sewald DFA to make roster room.
   11. Pirate Joe Posted: May 22, 2019 at 08:09 PM (#5844777)
Heading into this season there were three times players hit the ball into the river at PNC Park on the fly. Josh Bell has done it twice this month.

Vlad puts some hurt on Porcello, Sox up 2-1 after Jr.'s jack.

4 more homers for the Yanks, and it's still only the 4th inning.
   14. Howie Menckel Posted: May 22, 2019 at 08:36 PM (#5844783)
Nimmo exam shows "inflammation," Mets say.

Scherzer and deGrom both without their best stuff tonight - yet it's 1-0, mid-5th, on an Eaton HR.

Cano leaves early with "quad tightness."
   15. Bote Man Posted: May 22, 2019 at 08:39 PM (#5844784)
Laura Albanese @AlbaneseLaura
So Robinson Cano gets put on blast for not running out ground balls,
is benched,
told he needs to run out plays,
runs out a play today and...
leaves with left quad tightness.

You can't make this stuff up.

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
Minutes after Robinson Cano left tonight's game, the Syracuse Mets pulled infielder Luis Guillorme from their own game against Lehigh Valley. It would appear we could potentially see Guillorme in New York tomorrow.

So after Mookie Betts had to duck out of the way of a fastball, to avoid getting hit in the head from Sanchez, Sanchez has now managed to actually hit somebody in the head. Fortunately, Michael Chavis' head is apparently made of some heretofore unknown indestructible material.

But I really don't care if it was on purpose or not. If you can't avoid putting the ball around people's heads, you should not be allowed to pitch.
   17. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 22, 2019 at 08:44 PM (#5844786)
Ho hum, Torres goes deep again. That's his 2nd tonight and 4th in 3 nights.
   18. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 22, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5844789)
Sox with 3 on after BB to Bennie and Mookie. Would love to have JD up here, but alas....it's Mitch.

grounder to the left side brings in one! Better then the DP, way to go Mitch.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: May 22, 2019 at 09:08 PM (#5844792)
interesting to watch a clueless home plate umpire (Blakeley, is it?) and Scherzer/deGrom.

after punching out a bunch of hitters on wide pitches, the craftsmen adjust and hit the same spots. but the dope, after getting heat from so many batters, changes his strike zone in mid-game.

the unflappable deGrom has been flapped.

Phillies have had a ton of 3-ball counts so far, but Hamels sure isn't missing by much on a lot of these.
   23. Howie Menckel Posted: May 22, 2019 at 09:33 PM (#5844796)
McNeil also too dinged up today to play for the ailing Mets
   24. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 22, 2019 at 09:52 PM (#5844799)
Devers with the homer for an insurance run. Sox battling away, now up 4-3. Pen insists on giving one back every half inning.

Sox trying to hang on, On Walden pond out there trying to pick up the save....
   26. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 22, 2019 at 10:10 PM (#5844802)
Walden Pond coughs up a run, tie game. 3 relievers, each gave up a run.

Last start they let Porcello go into the 8th on over 100 pitches and he gives up the lead. This game they pull him on 80 pitches before the 7th starts and the relief crew does no better.

Frustrating stuff.
   27. Howie Menckel Posted: May 22, 2019 at 10:32 PM (#5844804)
the Nationals have only one legit reliever - Sean Doolittle.

tonight, it took him all of 12 pitches to allow a three-run double to Juan Lagares AND a three-run HR to 38-year-old Rajai Davis in his Mets debut, turning a 1-0 Nats lead into a 6-1 Nats loss.

wow

Nats are 19-30.

what might Max Scherzer fetch?
   28. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 22, 2019 at 10:37 PM (#5844805)
Lots of big Cubs HRs, yay.

That's... not an insurance run.

Rizzo damaged the budwiser sign with his home run tonight.

Gotta love that Toronto announcer. Bases loaded, one out, last of the 10th, and he says the runner on 3rd will probably go home if the ball is hit to the infield....

Devers Homer made it 4-2 and then Barnes gave it right back.

Holy ####, the Blue Jays just tied it in the 12th when they were down to their final out. Just when I was giving up hope.

EDIT: Just plain ####, as Chavis goes deep to unbreak the tie in the 13th.
   33. Meatwad Posted: May 22, 2019 at 11:20 PM (#5844811)
Cubs win! All 8 runs come via homer. Wind was blowing out at 18 mph to start the game.

..............

Davis took a 2-hour Uber to get to Citi Field tonight, said his driver was really into it.
arrived in the 3rd inning, got lost at the stadium, got to dugout in the 5th, and homered in the 8th.

I suppose one could spend all day posting Orioles pitching staff stats that blow minds.
The Orioles have allowed more home runs to right-handed batters (80) than 29 of the 30 teams have allowed to all batters (exception, Seattle with 89).
The Orioles are allowing a SLG of .557 at home. Almost 3 std devs above lg avg (including, not excluding, Balt)
   40. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 23, 2019 at 09:38 AM (#5844866)
The Orioles' pitchers have allowed a slash line of .269/.345/.513 so far this season. That means they turn the average hitter they face into Ryan Howard (career line of .258/.343/.515).
