Pride of the Yankees
"Entering the 2018 season, 28 teams in the league had hosted an LGBTQ pride night. The Los Angeles Angels this week announced plans for one at Angels Stadium in 2019.

That leaves the Yankees as the lone team in baseball that has yet to schedule a night dedicated to LGBTQ fans. The crosstown Mets, on the other hand, hosted their first pride night back in August of 2016."

CAN CHRIS SALE EVER BEAT JASON HAMMEL?

Actually, 538 says he's got a 77% chance. That's the highest probability it shows for any matchup between now and the Friday before the All-Star break. Imagine what that percentage would be if the game were in Fenway instead of KC.

Votto with the clutch HBP, moving Peraza into scoring position. His power appears to be gone, but, man, he can still get on-base. :-)

edit: i did not realize this, but, currently, Votto is the only qualifying player in the NL with an OB% over .400

edit 2: the Reds waste Joey's bodily sacrifice. 3-0 Reds going to the bottom of the 5th.

edit 3: 3-1 Reds after 5

Remember circa 2013-14 when the Cubs could absolutely not beat the Reds? That's what their encounters in the last month have felt like.

Sonny Gray already losing the strike zone. It'll be a miracle if he lasts four innings. He is just garbage.
   17. TomH Posted: July 06, 2018 at 07:42 PM (#5706362)
12, Why still ragging on Heyward? Plenty of players having worse years than him!

15, the Phils are laregly smoke and mirrors, but yes their W-L record is good. Aaron Nola and a bunch of .. I dunno, who is their best plyer so far? Cesar Hernandez, a good hitting and mediocre defensive 2Bman?

I'd almost rather watch a Donald Trump State of the Union address than watch Sonny Gray wet his pants on the mound. Does he ever do anything but nibble nibble nibble?

A Sonny Gray start at this point is just non competitive. I'm not sure what they're getting by running him out there every fifth day, except into a hole that's impossible to dig out of.

   33. Howie Menckel Posted: July 06, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5706406)
Mets announcers say this is the first walkoff HR of Joey Bats' MLB career.

runner on 1st, no outs, 1-1. For 3 pitches, Mets ask Mesoraco to produce his first sac bunt since 2009. uh, no. on 2-1 count, they switch up and Mesoraco singles.

Rosario then makes a 1970s-style sac bunt, so 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. Dom Smith feeble groundout. Nimmo IBB to load 'em up for Joey Bats. first pitch - second deck.
   34. TomH Posted: July 06, 2018 at 10:04 PM (#5706411)
The Cards have in 2018 to date their lowest team AVG and OBP in the past 30 years.

Which says more about their consistent offesne in this generation, and a little about MLB in 2018, than it does about the Cards OBP, which is near the league median.
   35. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: July 06, 2018 at 10:14 PM (#5706415)
In a 2-2 game in the 8th, the Nationals loaded the bases with nobody out. They failed to score. Of note, Bryce Harper walked in what appeared to be a better P.A. than has become typical for him, so at least there's that.

But Matt Mark Reynolds hits the walk-off home run to send them home happy. Rumor has it he won't be happy when he gets DFA'd in a few days, but who knows about rumors??
   36. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 06, 2018 at 10:28 PM (#5706419)
The good news about Sonny Gray is that he actually improved from a 12 Game Score to a 19. I'm just glad he's showing his true colors in June and July instead of August and September, so that the Yankees now have maximum motivation to find a real pitcher to replace him.

Kolten Wong, he of the career 38 homeruns, has 4 walk off homeruns..... not sure how Joey Bats got to 336 homeruns with zero walk offs. (well if I had to guess, is that they never pitched to him in those situations)

From Mets: Jacob deGrom has allowed three or fewer runs in 15-straight starts. It’s the longest streak by a Mets starter within one season since Dwight Gooden did so in 24-consecutive outings in 1985.

and the winning... omg, the fact that he wins, every freaking year. unlike every other manager the team has had since Southworth, Matheny wins every year as manager. I just don't get worrying about the small ####, when the team does the big #### well, which is win games.

I mean, seriously how many other managers in baseball history have a record remotely close to Matheny in their first 6 seasons... where they never produced a losing year, and their worst month was 3 games below .500 in that entire time.

It’s the longest streak by a Mets starter within one season since Dwight Gooden did so in 24-consecutive outings in 1985.

I went to the bulk of Gooden's home starts that year. it was man against boys - except the 20-year-old Gooden was younger than the vets he was humiliating. always sat behind home plate. was amusing to see how many foul balls went backwards - and credit to the batters who even got a small piece of the ball.

24-4 with a 1.53 ERA was pretty good that season, but his first 5 starts in a September pennant race were nice, too: 0 ER in 44 IP, 24 H, 9 BB, 39 K - yes, you read that right.

Because if they did the small #### better, they'd win MORE games, and maybe, you know, make the playoffs again. He's apparently a good man-manager and is good at keeping things on an even keel emotionally (sometimes to a fault), but the continued sloppy plays is just so un-Cardinal like, and it's kind of infuriating. Obviously he's not a disaster, but I really think they'd benefit from a change at this point. I don't think it's going to happen until after the season, though, and maybe not even then, unless the attendance and TV ratings start dropping and it starts hitting DeWitt in the DeWallet.

   61. Perry Posted: July 06, 2018 at 11:54 PM (#5706469)
I love how McCarver keeps insisting the pitch Sandoval fouled off was 9 inches outside when replays keep showing it's just barely off the corner (although also barely off the ground). He's not the only guy who does this, of course -- once an announcer says something, apparently union rules require him to stick to it even in the face of clear video evidence to the contrary.
   62. Perry Posted: July 07, 2018 at 12:06 AM (#5706471)
Wow, the Giants' left fielder backs up 3rd (on a throw from RF) and possibly saves a run. Impressive.

The home plate umpire in the Dodgers-Angels game is awful. Balls three inches the plate and low are being called strikes.

Our history has indicated that doing the small #### well means we don't win every other year.... this silliness of expecting a level of performance out of Matheny beyond what we got out of Hof managers like TLR and Whiney Herzog is ridiculous...

Matheny has never had a season where he was manager and the team was out of it in late September. Compared to every other manager on the planet, I literally don't care who... find me another manager who posted 6 consective winning seasons, in their first six seasons, in which they were potentially going to make the playoffs as late as September 20th...

The silliness that he is a bad manager is just people ignoring the reality of the situation.
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: July 07, 2018 at 12:12 AM (#5706475)
I mean Whiney Herzog has three times inherited 92+ win teams and took those teams to a sub .500 record... so claiming inheriting a great team is just luck, is one of the examples of how people are too ####### stupid to talk baseball rationally.
   66. cardsfanboy Posted: July 07, 2018 at 12:14 AM (#5706476)
Heck last week we had a Cardinal fan get all upset because Garcia bunted in the first inning, and yet if you read the Book written by MGL and Tango, they make an argument that bunting in that situation isn't bad, provided you do it rarely....which is exactly what the Cardinals did. It's called game theory... if you never do something, then it eliminates it as an option from the other team, which means they can play a different defense.

In Charlie Manuel's first nine full seasons, including his first seven with the Phils, his teams were in position to make the playoffs every year (he was under .500 when he was fired mid-year in Cleveland in his third campaign).

Guy looks to have been on a hof trajectory, but for some reason if he goes below .500 for even a few months he gets canned.
