Mets back at it tonight for a critical 3 game series in Atlanta. I hope it does not go badly.

trivia for the day: The 2019 AL will, by year's end, average hitting about 230 HR per team.

How many home runs did the 2015 World Series winning KC Royals hit that year? Closest without going over by 6:30 pm EDT wins!

I've a habit posting non-sequiturs about not so well known players and prospects and see no need to stop now.

I'm not sure why Shane McClanahan (LHP, TBR) doesn't get more attention as a prospect. Well, I get part of it - he's a bit lost in the depth of a loaded system, has had control issues, and doesn't throw as hard as he briefly flashed once upon a time (which was triple digits). That said: that still leaves him with minimally plus velocity/stuff, he's walked less than 2 per 9 since graduating to high-A (and AA), and he's good at limiting power.

He's a good starting pitching prospect.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals today revived an antitrust lawsuit against NFL/AT&T contending that Sunday Ticket is an illegal monopoly leading to fewer choices/higher prices for consumers. Potentially big implications for league's out-of-market package.

Would this have any impact on MLB.tv or DirecTV Extra Innings?

I wouldn't think so. For the NFL, you can only get Sunday Ticket on DirecTV. For the other sports, it's available through any cable/satellite provider in addition to directly online.

6--Thanks. But I always thought MLBTV was pretty cheap FWIW

Free, with Tmobile.

Through three innings today, Greinke has been the beneficiary of 2 double plays and a runner thrown out at home.

Speaking of today's riveting Sox-Astros game ... the Sox have a shockingly(?) low team BB total (on offense). Not only are they dead last in the league, they are 36 BB out of 14th and 55 BB out of 15th. They have 115 fewer walks than league average so about 1 per game. I only checked 2018 AL as a comp when Balt was last but they were only 3 behind 14th, 5 behind 13th, 7 behind 12th and 8 behind 11th and were only about 1/2 BB per game below average.

Yonder Alonso was the only player with more than 100 PA and a walk rate over 10%. Otherwise Castillo and Moncada lead the team at 7.6% -- league average is 8.5% (Sox team average 6.3%). That's not resulting in more BIP as their K-rate is 26% vs league average of 23%.

Don't think there's a way to do PI for walk percentage but the Sox are on pace for about 381 BB in 162 games. The worst of the 21st century are:

2002 Det 363
2015 Mia 375
2014 KCR 380
2016 KCR 382
2015 KCR 383

So it will take some work to catch 2002 Detroit but a real shot at the #2 slot. And a team could do worse than replicating the pennant-winning 2014-15 Royals.
   14. TomH Posted: August 13, 2019 at 06:41 PM (#5871111)
#11 Quintana was pretty close; 139 dingers for the 2015 Royals.

How will the Red Sox score 5 runs and still lose today?

Maybe CHRIS SALE will continue his good form and the Sox will win or merely chris sale will show up and be done by the 4th inning...

So far CHRIS SALE is looking good. In the 3rd, 8 up, 8 down. Has 2 runs of support already but that will be all he gets as for some reason the batsman take the day off when Chris is on the bump.

They’re describing Blake Parker as an ex-Cub. I have no memory of that whatsoever.
   34. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 13, 2019 at 09:26 PM (#5871145)
Oof. Apparently Parker’s hair transplant didn’t work - he’s now bald *and* has a huge scar from ear to ear. That’s rough.
   35. Brian C Posted: August 13, 2019 at 09:27 PM (#5871146)
I remember Blake Parker, but I remember virtually every ex-Cub, and he was around for awhile in the rebuilding years. I am nonetheless pretty shocked to see that he's still in the majors, since I do not remember Blake Parker being particularly good.

But looking it up now, it looks like he was better than I remember ... 3.59 FIP in 74 games.

Bah, Sales coughs up another dinger, this time a 2 run shot. Sox still up 6-3. Sale has been prone to the long ball all year long. Amazing with those juiced balls how those 350 foot outs to straightaway LF or RF now turn into 370 foot homers.

So, Maddon won’t use his closer in a tie on the road in extra innings, because what if there’s a save situation later on in the game?

And yet, he has no problem LOOGYing in the 7th inning of a tie game, despite a depleted bullpen and the reasonable possibility of extra innings.
   40. Brian C Posted: August 13, 2019 at 09:41 PM (#5871152)
Who did he LOOGY? Ryan pitched to two guys - one of whom was a PH for the pitcher and guaranteed to be a platoon mismatch - and probably would still be in the game had he gotten them both out.
   41. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 13, 2019 at 09:44 PM (#5871154)
Ah, I didn’t see the PH at-bat. I stand corrected. But he probably would have LOOGYed if Harper were leading off the inning.
   42. Brian C Posted: August 13, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5871155)
Who can say. Maddon doesn't LOOGY Ryan very often, and when he does, it's been in the 8th.
   43. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 13, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5871156)
The 6 runs the Sox have are not "Sox pitching staff proof" Sox now only up 6-5 and here come the Indians. Sox really need to score 8 or more to secure a win these days.

CHRIS SALE has morphed back into chris sale....
   44. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 13, 2019 at 10:00 PM (#5871160)
Devers now 5 for 5 with another single. Sox hanging on at 6-5. Need 4 runs to feel safe with Sox "dumpster fire" pen needing to get 6 more outs.

Tying run Tony Kemp rung up on a pitch outside at shoulder level for the first out in the ninth. Just brutal. That ump should be at least fined.

Yeah that was seriously one of the worst strike calls I've ever seen. Just not even remotely borderline or close in any way.

Might literally be the worst strike call ever.

I thought this must be an exaggeration so I looked at the Gameday pitch location and wow, horrible, horrible call, one of the worst, if not the worst, I've seen.

Red Sox pen blows another lead. Baseball is not fun when your pitching stinks...

I thought this must be an exaggeration...

I can't blame you. But for others reading this thread ... go find video of the pitch. It is not an exaggeration in the least to say that it is a pitch that you've literally never seen called a strike. It was high enough and far enough off the plate that few batters would ever even chase it.

ETA: here you go
   53. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 13, 2019 at 11:04 PM (#5871176)
JBJ homers, Sox up 7-6, Devers now 6 for 6 with 4 doubles. How often does someone hit 4 doubles in a game? That's kind of neat.
   54. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 13, 2019 at 11:06 PM (#5871177)
And the Sox manage to run into 2 outs on one play, both Xander and Devers thrown out.
   55. vortex of dissipation Posted: August 13, 2019 at 11:13 PM (#5871179)
It had been ten years since the Mariners had had a batter hit three home runs in a game - until tonight. Kyle Seager hit three, but it was his third, in the ninth inning, that was classic.

Seager hit a ball to deep left center field. Tigers center fielder Niko Goodrum looked to have a bead on the ball as he crossed the warning track, but as the ball hit his glove he realized he was going to collide with left fielder Brandon Dixon. The ball popped out of Goodrum's glove, then hit the top of the outfield fence, and then landed on the other side. By the rules, that's a home run. And Goodrum sat at the base of the fence, looking like he wished he could be anywhere else...

It is not an exaggeration in the least to say that it is a pitch that you've literally never seen called a strike.

When the Phillies Phans themselves expressed surprise at that crappy call, you KNOW it was bad! Maybe it was because the ump was using a regular sized strike zone on Tony Kemp??
   58. Bote Man Posted: August 13, 2019 at 11:24 PM (#5871182)
Meanwhile, the Giants smacked 3 consecutive 2-out doubles to get on the board and then go ahead of Oakland 2-1 in the 6th. You can't miss either way on the radio call with Jon Miller for the Giants and Ken Korach for the Athletics.
   59. Astroenteritis Posted: August 13, 2019 at 11:25 PM (#5871183)
The south side of Chicago sees that rare occurrence, a complete game...by Ivan Nova. Gerrit Cole scratched with a hammy problem. Nova pitched very well.

And the pen holds! Sox do NOT waste a Devers 6 for 6 day. Here it comes, at last, the 20-6 stretch the Sox have been promising all season long!

That was fantastically odd. Now both Seager brothers have a 3 homer game. And I know that the younger Seager has one as my oldest son was in LA and at the game when it happened.

Mets have made arrangements for Ruben Tejada to join the team in Atlanta. The official word is that McNeil (hamstring) will be evaluated later today, but they have plan in place, in case.

..............

(somewhere, the finally-retired Chase Utley makes a fist and points at the clouds in frustration. he thought sure he had finished this guy off!)
(Utley has apologized, but he was never penalized by MLB, incredibly. so he gets mocked for all eternity instead, as an alternative punishment.)
   65. Lassus Posted: August 14, 2019 at 12:45 PM (#5871284)
I agree that Utley deserves all the crap he gets about Tejada.

And I wish I could be there for Ruben's first moment on the field at New Shea, as that will be awesome.
