Sonny Gray is useless in Yankee stadium. Absolutely useless.

Cardinals are the worst team in baseball at avoiding being picked off... Bader with a single and picked off to start this game.

That didn't look like it was going out, but apparently a 45° launch angle & the breeze helped a bit. Terrific Teenager Juan Soto now at .339/.446/.597.

Cardinals announcers having fun with Jim Edmonds, Edmonds is like "Andy Pettite didn't have a great move against me."... "then TLR told me that I was something like 1 for 17 against him, so I was never on base."

and then Dan Mclaughlin lets Edmonds know "you were 5 for 36 against Pettitte." meanwhile I was already on bb-ref and looking up the numbers which say he was he 6 for 42 against Pettite, so I'm wondering where McLaughlin is getting his numbers from..

cfb or others who follow St Looie - WHAT'S UP WITH WONG? How can a guy, who had very little power last year and hit .285, gain some power and hit .185??

Mariners just announced via their radio crew that they have a "handful" of seats available for tmr night's game. A random Thursday tilt, granted against the regional Angels. Happy for their fans and the city.

Very little power? Guy hit 12 homeruns in 113 games in 2014... he has power, just has an inability of consistency.. He's streaky as freaking hell. And the team panics when he isn't playing well and benches him, so he can't work his way out of the slump. He's a 90 ops+ hitter with average skills pretty much across the board, and a plus defender, that is what he was promoted as, but at the same time, the Cardinals aren't wasting time on a streaky player when they have more consistent guys on the roster performing.

Wong really needs to be on a sub .500 team that will keep him in the lineup, because he's a 3 war player right now, but he needs to work through his streaks, when you have Gyorko and Garcia on the roster,(and even Munoz) he doesn't really have the option to work through his streaks.

okay, "very little power last year" is what I said, although yes he has shown it before. I was just wondering if maybe someone saw him hitting into very bad luck or something like that... or did he change his approach.

SO-TO MAY-OR!
CLAP! CLAP! CLAP-CLAP-CLAP!

Enjoy Seattle, Bryce!

Jorge Castillo @jorgecastillo
This is Soto's 1st career multi-HR game. He has 5 homers in 20 games as a major leaguer.

That Soto guy is proving to be pretty good.

Unfortunately my Red Sox pessimism sees NY coming back to win this 9-5 as NY never loses....

He did change his approach this year, to actually reduce the power and concentrate more on putting the ball in play(he reduced his leg kick...but when he has certain situations, he goes back to his old approach, his walk off homerun last week was all about him going back to the leg kick in a situation where he didn't need to concentrate on contact)

Wong's real issue is his streakiness, and the fact that the Cardinals have enough talent to cover for it, so that he's benched more than he should be. If he's allowed to play 25 out of 30 games in a row, his numbers would match up with what you expect him to do, which is roughly .270/.330/.380 line(or better) but because of the fact that the team has plenty of options, any slumps, means a benching, which of course means when he does get playing time, he's pressing himself to perform, which of course means a continuation of the struggles.

This isn't a knock on Matheny, since his goal is to win every game possible, but is a knock on the fact that the team doesn't have the ability to let a player like Wong or Carson Kelly work through their struggles, heck Dexter Fowler is losing playing time to Harrison Bader because of a mini-slump.

Yankees were pushing their luck going with two innings of Shreve. That plus Gray's inability to pitch at Yankee stadium were enough to doom them tonight.

Yankees were pushing their luck going with two innings of Shreve. That plus Gray's inability to pitch at Yankee stadium were enough to doom them tonight.

Shreve's only credential seems to be that he's a lefty in an otherwise all-righty pre-Chapman bullpen. I couldn't believe he was sent out for a second inning, either.

OTOH while Gray wasn't exactly impressive, all the runs off him were kind of rinky-dink, the first on a Didi misplay that extended the inning and the next three on what was a Yankee Stadium version of a Dusty Rhodes special that got caught in the wind and landed in the first row.

But Christ, is that Soto impressive, with half his hits going to the opposite field and his walks equal to his strikeouts. If only the Yankees could toilet train some of their hitters to emulate that approach to hitting.
