The sun rises and JA Happ continues to suck.

Gary Sanchez’s 1st-inning 3-run HR gives the Yankees a 4-1 lead over the Orioles. That’s Sanchez’s 10th HR against the Orioles, joining Gleyber Torres (13) with double-digit HRs against Baltimore this season, which a dispirited Gary Thorne informs was only done against a team once before, by Ruth & Gehrig (11 each) against the Red Sox in 1927.
   3. Howie Menckel Posted: August 14, 2019 at 01:51 PM (#5871313)
do the Yankees have any games left against anyone other than the Orioles before the playoffs?

and doesn't New York have some sort of relevant anti-bullying laws?
   4. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 14, 2019 at 01:56 PM (#5871320)
Alas, today is the Yankees last game against the Orioles, who are unlikely to make the playoffs. In fact, it appears that Baltimore will be eliminated if they lose today.

Spoke to a #Yankees veteran about the respect they have for #Orioles despite the daily blow-outs. “Lot of teams getting beat like that, they start throwing at you, somehow think it’s what you’re supposed to do. But not (#Orioles). They’re still playing hard. We do respect that."

Have the Orioles instituted a suicide watch for Gary Thorne???
   10. rconn23 Posted: August 14, 2019 at 03:59 PM (#5871409)
Padres have not put up much of a fight against the Rays at all. Was hoping to move the division lead back to double digits. With Rays playing Detroit and Yankees playing four against the Indians, race could tighten up quick.

Is Dave O’Brien hung over or something? His reaction to the three Red Sox home runs today has been somnambulant.

So long, Orioles. I'm going to miss you.

How did the Orioles beat the Yankees twice this year?
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 14, 2019 at 06:04 PM (#5871451)
Nationals clawed their way to a 3-1 lead, and then Adam Eaton’s 3-run HR, followed by an Anthony Rendon solo shot, made it 7-1. Pretty good work against Trevor Bauer.

EDIT: Kurt Suzuki hits a 3-run HR, the Nationals 3rd HR of a 10-run 5th inning, in which they “scored-around”, with 10 straight batters scoring. 11-1, still only 2 outs.
   15. Bote Man Posted: August 14, 2019 at 06:19 PM (#5871459)
Wha?? Are we just going to ignore past and future Silver Slugger winner Stephen Strasburg's opposite field RBI single that started the fireworks??

Red Sox win behind the left side MVP's both homering and a motley collection of pitchers.

Here comes the 20-6 run baby! Here come the Red Sox. No sense in peaking early, the time to peak is now and get into the playoffs on a roll.
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 14, 2019 at 07:02 PM (#5871471)
After batting around in their 10-run 5th inning, the Nationals have batted around again in the 6th, scoring 6, with still ONLY ONE OUT!

EDIT: A merciful double-play ends the inning at a possibly bullpen-proof 17-4.

Cubs seem to be averaging a game like this once a week. They had a nice run of pitching a few weeks back, but have made up ground by having three blowouts in the last 8 days.

I’ll spare you the step by step. Coconut oil is the world’s greatest lubricant. I can’t help where your mind goes with this. Once the ball leaves the bat, I can’t steer it

I can honestly say I enjoyed eating the softer, edible bones of the chicken that I just now devoured more than the meat. I inhaled some of the harder portions as well; if I could grind it up in my teeth, it was going down.
When I ran over the squirrel, I didn’t feel any [guilt]. Don’t get me wrong; I didn’t take any pleasure in it. I simply didn’t really feel anything

Gabe Kapler’s only season as a manager gave hints for how he will lead Phillies
“He was so into health,” Still said. “He’s addicted to ice cream. So he would sit there and lick ice cream but have a cup and spit it into it. He would lick it just for the taste but didn’t want to eat it. I told him, ‘Dude, that’s like Unabomber type stuff.’ That’s a thing he did.”

Paxton lost and Happ got lit up in the second and third games of the season. That was when Stanton, Andujar, Voit, and Tulowitzki were keeping Urshela, Tauchman, and Maybin out of the starting lineup.

Lost in the Charlie Manuel news is that Logan Morrison is a Phillie. The ultimate missing piece.
some backstory for this, from 2011:
Morrison has accomplished the rarest of feats: He's not from Philadelphia, he has never played for a Philly team, yet he's a fan favorite. He has done it all through Twitter.

Morrison, like a lot of athletes on social networks, joined Twitter at the request of his agent. But nlike most of his peers, Morrison, who goes under the handle @LoMoMarlins, is very active (he tweeted 20 times Friday) and often interacts with fans.

"In the offseason, it was pretty much (all) Philly fans - I don't know if that's because they're more active in the social network," Morrison said. "I do have Florida followers who get mad at me for interacting with them. I say hey man, they tweet me. If you guys would Tweet me and say something funny, I'd tweet you back. But a lot of you guys are boring."

and again, from 2011:
DB: What have fans at the ballpark in Philly done to make you laugh?

LoMo: Carlos Ruiz hit one foul down the line foul and I was after it to go get it. And then I hear, "Morrison! You went to Maple Woods Community College? You're stupid AND you suck!" So, I thought that was pretty good. And then the next play, I proceeded to throw out Ryan Howard at home plate so I turned around and let them know to hush. But it's all in good fun.

DB: Do you sense any jealousy or disapproval from teammates or Marlins fans at how well you get along with Phillies fans on Twitter?

LoMo: Sometimes, yeah, sometimes the Marlins fans get a little perturbed about it. I don't know why. When we're on there, some of them go, "What's up with these Phillies fans?" And I say, "I don't know. They tweet me more." I mean, what do you want me to say? I'm not going to push them off because they're not fans of the Marlins. They seem to like me and get along with me, so ...

DB: They also seem to be openly recruiting you for the time when you're a free agent.

LoMo: Exactly. Again, I would be wrong to tell them to screw off because it would only be hurting my chances to get more money [laughs].
...
DB: How can you make your kids' baseball camp better next year?

LoMo: Well, we can bring in guys like John Kruk. He's coming.

That should be a hit and Molina NOT out -- the ball had passed the infielder. That's just a live ball.
   47. Perry Posted: August 14, 2019 at 10:12 PM (#5871528)
Umps got that right, whether it hit the infielder's glove or not. Announcers don't know the rule. Good thing the umps do.
