HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Argh:
Coley Harvey, ESPN Staff Writer

Once again the Yankees get one back, only to lose one. As centerfielder Aaron Hicks gets reinstated off the injured list Monday, pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga goes on the 10-day IL due to a right shoulder strain. That's retroactive to Friday. So they're still at a dozen players on IL.

So Luis Cessa goes this evening.

No Lasagna for dinner tonight, then.

Yeesh.

[edit] Ugh, right-rotator cuff strain.

Shut down for 4 weeks.

Andujar going back for more tests. I'm starting to think the Yankees medical staff may not really know what they're doing.

More on #4

NEW YORK -- Miguel Andújar is headed back to the injured list with a right labrum tear, the Yankees announced on Monday. Manager Aaron Boone said on Monday that the club planned to order new imaging tests to further explore the state of the infielder's ailing right shoulder.

Andujar sustained the torn labrum by diving back into third base on March 31, but he was able to return to the lineup after following a rehab protocol.

Left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

The Yankees initially believed that Andujar's injury would affect only his throwing, not his hitting, though nine games of results have suggested that is not the case. Since being activated from the IL on May 4, Andujar is 3-for-34 (.088).

"We feel like even though he's passed everything and the strength tests have been good and [we] rehabbed him properly, we do feel like the injury is certainly a contributing factor to some of the struggles," Boone said. "I think we'll reassess all that and try to get a plan in place to try and get him back."

At least he's out of the lineup, watching him flail away at the plate was no fun ...

Yankees @ Orioles start delayed by rain. Seems to be some bands of showers passing north of DC and hitting Baltimore, but Weather Channel says only 15% chance of precipitation at 7:00 PM, and 5% - 35% until 11:00 PM. Might be some delays, but seems like there’s a window to get the game in. What’s Mike Trout saying?

Anyone with an update? Radar seems clear ...
   8. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 13, 2019 at 07:56 PM (#5841726)
I should have been a bit more attentive on #6, since the game is at Yankee Stadium. Tarp off the field, and apparently pitchers started warming up, but lots of standing water in outfield caused a problem. MLB Network had video of grounds crew squeegeeing water everywhere. Look like they’ll need some time to make it minimally acceptable.
   9. A sad, lost penguin wandering the tundra, dreaming Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:11 PM (#5841730)
Thanks for the update!
   10. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:22 PM (#5841731)
Field looking a bit better, and MASN has video of more discussions with managers & umpires. With 70% chance of rain at 9:00 PM, this might be dicey. Would you start at 8:45 PM with that forecast? Yankees using a stopgap starter tonight, and should be healthier later in the season (KNOCK ON WOOD), so there are some incentives to call it. It’s rainy, windy, temp of 48°, wind chill of 39°. Not great, but they’re still trying to play.

EDIT: Jim Palmer speculating Orioles will go with an Opener due to weather, as Orioles Manager & Pitching Coach huddle.
   11. Chip Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:23 PM (#5841732)
They said on YES that the source of the problem seems to be how and where the grounds crew dumped the water off the tarp when they pulled it off the infield, because they completely inundated a section of left & left-center and made it into a swamp. They’ve got every leaf blower and squeegee in the known world out there trying to force out enough moisture to fix that.
   12. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:32 PM (#5841733)
OHTANI GOES YARD! First of the season!
   13. Chip Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:42 PM (#5841736)
Looks like it’s going to officially be a washout in NY despite there being no rain for at least 3 hours now.
   14. Chip Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:48 PM (#5841738)
“Postponed due to unplayable field conditions.” Split doubleheader on Wednesday.

Bah.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 13, 2019 at 08:53 PM (#5841740)
Split doubleheader on Wednesday.
MASN broadcast said single admission doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM. They’ve got a couple of days to get it squared away. What could go wrong?
   17. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: May 13, 2019 at 09:14 PM (#5841744)
Ugh. Tim Anderson takes ball 3 right over the plate but 2-3 inches low. A clear ball, not even borderline. The next pitch is in the same spot but an inch lower. Strike one. He then flies out on the next pitch.
   18. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: May 13, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5841755)
Aaron Nola leaves after 84 pitches in 3 innings.
   19. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 13, 2019 at 10:10 PM (#5841758)
ESPN crew as pretty much abandoned calling the game action in favor of a 10-minute David Ross soliloquy on pitch framing. Turns out, he thinks it's important. In fairness, the pace of this game is grievous, but having him go on and on, saying pretty much the same thing, doesn't help much.
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 14, 2019 at 12:22 AM (#5841772)
Bit of a flap in the Athletics @ Mariners as the umpires apparently advise Mariners reliever Cory Gearrin during his warm-up that his subtle toe-tap is illegal, then go to the headphones to check with MLB on rules interpretation. Much less noticeable than the Carter Capps hop-skip-and-jump delivery, so perhaps MLB has revisited its prior “anything goes if you always do it” interpretation.

Laureano!

Five solo homers for the A's tonight.

Mariners walk it off.
   24. Meatwad Posted: May 14, 2019 at 07:40 PM (#5842034)
So I guess we can use this for tonight. Hendricks has a single and a double so far. Has a pitcher ever hit for the cycle?
   25. Meatwad Posted: May 14, 2019 at 07:42 PM (#5842035)
Double post.

I have no idea if that HR was fair or foul, but Michael Chavis can absolutely destroy a baseball. Jesus.

Sale has K'd the first 6 batters today. I think he's back to normal.
   28. Fancy Crazy Town Banana Pants Handle Posted: May 14, 2019 at 07:58 PM (#5842044)
You jinxed it. Now they got a groundout. I was hoping for more Ks... ok there is 7 of 8 now.
   29. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 14, 2019 at 08:05 PM (#5842047)
Sale, 8K through 3.....
   30. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 14, 2019 at 08:06 PM (#5842049)
JD does what he is paid to do....hit and hit well.
   31. Fancy Crazy Town Banana Pants Handle Posted: May 14, 2019 at 08:21 PM (#5842053)
Strikeouts per inning: 3, 3, 2, 1. Clearly Sale is getting tired.
   32. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:00 PM (#5842076)
Looks like Sale is over his lollygagging phase, and hitters can only hope his tuckered out phase starts soon.
   33. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5842079)
What a game for Hendricks. He has allowed 1 run, driven in 2. Allowed 3 hits, got 3 hits. He can't get a Maddux because he allowed a run, but he's at 92 pitches through 8.
   34. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:07 PM (#5842084)
Strange replay review in Mets @ Nationals. Nationals reliever Eric Fedde covering first on grounder clearly stomps the ground short of the base, and then swipes his foot over the bag without contact. Batter called out, but umpire’s angle does give him good view of Fedde’s foot being short or over. Mets challenge, and video seems clear, but call upheld. Perhaps MLB Central took pity on Fedde for missing an easy play twice?
   35. Fancy Crazy Town Banana Pants Handle Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:10 PM (#5842091)
Sale 17 strikeouts through 7, new career best. 108 pitches, so probably done for the night.
   36. villageidiom Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:11 PM (#5842092)
17 Ks through 7.
   37. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:12 PM (#5842093)
Sale gave up a dinger to make it 3-2, but also has set a new career high for strikeouts at 17. My concerns about his effectiveness were clearly mistaken.

Also, Thor pitched well tonight, and I'm sad I missed most of those performances to watch TUUUUUUKKA save 20 shots in a single period.
   38. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:24 PM (#5842101)
Eddie Matz, ESPN Senior Writer

Rookie outfielder Victor Robles, who just went yard off Noah Syndergaard, now leads the Nationals with seven homers. Three of those have come against Syndergaard.

I love Ohtani, but that guy really makes some crazy dumb base running mistakes.
   40. Kiko Sakata Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:34 PM (#5842107)
What a game for Hendricks. He has allowed 1 run, driven in 2. Allowed 3 hits, got 3 hits. He can't get a Maddux because he allowed a run, but he's at 92 pitches through 8.

Hendricks's last three games: 9 IP, 8 IP, 8 IP. And the only walk he allowed across those three games was the last guy he faced tonight. Oh yeah, and the only earned run he allowed in those three games was also today - Joey Votto home run. All while basically sitting 86 mph on his fastball. What a fun guy to watch!
   41. Brian C Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:35 PM (#5842109)
Hendricks now has racked up 25 innings in his last three starts, giving up 2 total runs, while walking only 1 and striking out 17. He has not thrown more than 97 pitches in any of those three starts. He's had a Maddux-lite reputation for years, but the last three starts he's been pretty close to the real deal.
   42. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:35 PM (#5842110)
Rockies take the lead over the Sawx on a Charlie Blackmon two-run homer, 17 strikeouts or no 17 strikeouts.
   43. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:47 PM (#5842120)
Moreland delivers, 4-4 in Boston, 2 runners on...

I get why Sale was pulled, but man 20 years ago, at 17K's through 7, they would've let him go for the record back then....
   44. Nasty Nate Posted: May 14, 2019 at 09:47 PM (#5842121)
All tied at Fenway
   45. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 14, 2019 at 10:27 PM (#5842132)
Ohtani thrown out again in Minnesota. This time not on a bad decision, just a great throw by Buxton. May have hurt the catcher, too, sliding right into his ankle.
   46. Chip Posted: May 14, 2019 at 10:48 PM (#5842144)
Brasier continues to miss in the middle of the plate, and pays. After killing himself with BBs.
   47. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 14, 2019 at 10:55 PM (#5842148)
Red Sox strike out 24 Rockies in 11 innings...and lose...boooooo...
