Yeah, no idea what he is saying. The Cubs have a 3 game lead. The Giants are 5 games out of 3rd and have a 13.5 game lead on 5th place. The Reds are 7.5 games out of 4th.

And the #Nationals 2018 season is officially over as @CraigMish reports that Daniel Murphy has been traded to the #Cubs and @JeffPassan reports Matt Adams has been dealt to the #Cardinals…who’s next? Gonzalez? Harper?

Hmmmm
   7. bunyon Posted: August 21, 2018 at 02:34 PM (#5730844)
According to mlb.com, Daniel Murphy is a Cub.

Do the Cubs need him?

And the Nats are definitely waving the white flag.

EDIT: DAMMIT, MOSES! Coke.

Is Bryant done for the year?

Dodgers are the team that's claimed Harper. Holy #### if they make a deal for him...

Is Bryant done for the year?

That's one possibility. Another is they're writing off Russell for the year. A third is he's just a really good bat and the Cubs offense has been garbage lately so it's another toy for Maddon to play with.
   11. salvomania Posted: August 21, 2018 at 02:43 PM (#5730857)
Yeah, no idea what he is saying.

I was exaggerating for dramatic effect; still, the reality isn't too far off: six teams within one game of each other, all between 2.5 and 3.5 games behind a seventh team (the Cubs) for NL's best record.

With six weeks to go, any of those seven teams could end up with the NL's best record; two of them will be on the outside looking in come October.

Matt Adams back to the Cardinals, where he received a standing orgasm from the crowd when the Nats were there last week.
   15. phredbird Posted: August 21, 2018 at 03:18 PM (#5730894)

stupid effing MLBTV is blacking out the cardinals and dodgers in my area.

i live TWO HOURS BY CAR FROM L.A.

MORE than that if you account for normal traffic.

last year they were blacking out the padres, this year it's the dodgers.

i can even get angels games.

this is just so stupid.

   16. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: August 21, 2018 at 03:29 PM (#5730904)
I live in Iowa. The closest MLB team is the Royals at 2.5 hour drive away. They black out the Royals (2.5 hrs), Twins (4), Cubs and White Sox (5.5), Brewers (6), and Cardinals (6). It is a joke.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: August 21, 2018 at 04:04 PM (#5730946)
What is the purpose of Matt Adams to the Cardinals?
I get it was a waiver claim, but he doesn't really offer anything to the team that they don't already have.

edit: I guess they wanted a better left handed bench player with a bit of power.

Shift Jose Martinez to the OF, and get another bat in the lineup?

Who'd you rather see pinch-hitting in the 9th: Greg Garcia or Matt Adams?

Actually, with Yairo Munoz off the DL today, Garcia is very expendable...

Not seeing how that helps. Jose Martinez has already been shifted to the outfield(he's had one game at 1b this month, and that was August 1st) Carpenter is the starting first baseman now, if you are shifting anyone, it's shifting Carpenter to another position, but you probably don't shift him to second in games that Adams is going to start because Wong is the only other left handed starter on the team, so you would be moving Carpenter to third, and taking Gyorko out of the lineup. Gyorko has a 113 ops+ compared to Adams 117 so you are adding a little bit better bat, but then you are taking away's Gyorko's defense which is going from a plus defensive third baseman to a slightly below average to average third baseman...the defensive difference between Carpenter and Adams at first is probably not as big of a gap, although Carpenter has played better this year than in the past and the numbers say Adams isn't as good as he was a few years ago, so that is probably another hit.

Meanwhile this move means that the team will send Wisdom back to the minors, which isn't horrible. Still the team has a hard enough time finding playing time for Gyorko and Martinez, this is just going to add to the headache.
   21. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 21, 2018 at 04:33 PM (#5730979)
Adams' hitting has fallen off in the last week to 10 days or so. But, new surroundings and all...
   22. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 21, 2018 at 04:36 PM (#5730982)
You can never have enough bench bats or relief pitchers; I don't see the need to worry about giving Adams regular starts. Rosters expand in 10 days, so that crunch - and the Cubs one - will work themselves out. Just gotta hope the managers allocate the PT appropriately.

I'm fine with the acquisition, just didn't really see the point. With it being this close to expanded rosters, it doesn't matter.

You're comparing the wrong numbers. vs RHP Adams has a 133 wRC+, while Gyorko has an 89. Gyorko's good season numbers are based purely on killing lefties, and Adams sucks vs LHP. Last year it was 126 vs. 101. Career 125 vs. 94.

Against righties, moving Carpenter to 3B, Adams to 1B, and benching Gyorko seems to make sense.

Another is they're writing off Russell for the year.

I hope not. Russel's bat has been shite this year but he is still an elite defender. Murphy is a horrendous defender, and his bat has been meh. Russell 2.3 WAR, Murphy -0.8

I live 8+ hours from DFW and Rangers games are blacked out. Not that I mind missing the Rangers per se (sorry BDC), but I certainly do when they're playing the Mariners. Combined with the fact that Houston (5.5 hours away) is also blacked out, and I miss 40 games a year.

Zimmerman has been pretty terrible lately after a decent stretch. Of course, you wouldn't know that thus far.

Dan Kolko @masnKolko
Tanner Roark has three extra-base hits and eight RBI on the season. He’s legitimately been hot at the plate the last few weeks.

Roark with the RBI double over the befuddled Odubel Herrera racing back to the wall.

I did a Google search yesterday for the terms "crew chief" and a few umpires names. Apparently that is closely-held information, much like the assignments of CIA agents or something. The mystery continues.

here ya go

Hernandez is the longest tenured umpire who is not a crew chief.

Perhaps the Marlins broadcast erred, or Hernandez is only acting temporarily in the absence of the crew chief. The replay crew might be busy tonight.

From ThisGreatGame.com's 1949: Casey at the Helm:
The list of Yankee injuries became so long and talked about, the front office decided to start an official tally as press release fodder; at season’s end, the count stood at 71.

And yet they won the World Series in spite of it all. Of course their big opponent in 1949 was the 25 players / 25 cabs Red Sox, not this year's monster team.

Nationals win 10-4 despite "waiving the white flag" earlier today. Terrific teenager Juan Soto continues to rise up the Age-19 Season Leaderboard, with an IBB tonight putting him within one of the record shared by Ken Griffey, Jr. & Rusty Staub (8). Soto's 59 BB are also within one of Will Smalley's 1890 record (60). Of possibly greater significance, Soto is currently BB-Ref's all-time age-19 season leader for OPS (.935) & OPS+ (144).

A couple of innings ago he was pissed at O'Neill for not giving way on a ball that he (O'Neill) was camped under. Think Shildt is going to have to have a word.

the announcers seemed to think that it's the centerfielder's to take, even though bader covered way more ground. after, you could see bader hollering 'i was calling it, bro!' ... don't know how o'neill could have heard though, the bleacher crowd makes a big racket at dodger stadium.

is this something the manager should get into? maybe a coach would chat with them. i would think shildt would just stay out of it unless there was more talking in the dugout.

Loved the story McLaughlin told tonight about Shildt. Shildt saying Red Schoendienst told him the way to get out of a slump: 50 bunts a day. "Where'd you get that, Red?" "Ty Cobb."

Whether it's good advice or not, I love the idea of one degree of separation from Ty Cobb to Mike Shildt.

Yeah, sounds like McGee's purview. But you can bet it'll be addressed.

Me too, but temperamentally, it might suit him. Glad Yadi's there to keep his head together.

OW, martinez takes a mean comebacker right in the labonza.

ball falls out, he collapses, cards were lucky to get the out when the lead runner got caught off second base on the ensuing play.
