HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

I protest the re-use of a thread title after so little time for us to forget.

Also, somehow the Mets trounced the Reds 8-0. Experts baffled!!

Bote, Bote:

Now, Bote is displaying that hard contact in the big leagues. He entered Tuesday leading the league in average exit velocity (minimum 25 balls in play) at 96.3 mph. He’s followed on that list by Aaron Judge, Nelson Cruz, Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Cabrera.
   4. Bote Man Posted: August 08, 2018 at 03:55 PM (#5723394)
But what about that Launch Angle??!!

But seriously, folks: my nickname is pronounced "boat" whereas this imposter uses the obtuse American phonetic pronunciation "bo-tee" which is heinous. As my Dad would excoriate others, it's pronounced like the word "vote"!! You do vote don't you, or are you unpatriotic??!!
   5. rconn23 Posted: August 08, 2018 at 04:00 PM (#5723402)
The Mariners have a pitching problem.
   6. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 08, 2018 at 04:06 PM (#5723411)
Launch angle? Oh, there's a Bote story for that:

“I had one of the highest exit velos in the organization,” Bote said. “But with a really low launch angle. So they were saying if we could use that exit velo and get a little bit more launch angle. We worked with numbers and it’s not feasible to say, ‘I’m at a four (degree launch angle), so now I need to get to a 12,’ that doesn’t happen. But if we can create path and contact points and repetition and not actually make a swing change, more approach and timing. They didn’t want me to buy into the fly-ball, 25-degree launch angle. Just stick to what I do well with line drives. Instead of lines drives at four degrees, just get it a little higher.”

He's taken to using Bowie as part of his walk up music. I'll take him and that over you and your....communist every word should be pronounced the same as other words bullshit.

   7. Voodoo Posted: August 08, 2018 at 04:06 PM (#5723412)
Bote, Bote:

What do we know about exit velocity in terms of variance? Is it a "skill"? In Bote's case is it likely just that he's been seeing more fastballs because he's not feared by pitchers and he's punishing them or ... or ... OR! Maybe Bote is one of those guys that just starts mashing out of nowhere at around age 25 to 27, just like a couple others on the list Moses quotes.

It's almost certainly the former, but it's fun to dream as a fan.

One of the fun things about being a Cubs fan in this new era is that young hitters keep coming up and doing REALLY WELL immediately. It started in 2014 with Soler and Baez (who was actually terrible, but did hit a GW HR in his first game) and then the flood started in 2015 with Bryant, Russell and Schwarber, Willson came along in 2016 as did Almora (who was immediately spectacular with the glove, if not bat), then Happ in 2017 and just when you thought the cupboard was totally bare and there wouldn't be another one in the pipeline, along comes Bote in 2018.
   8. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 08, 2018 at 04:13 PM (#5723414)
That's a good question, and I don't know. Other parts of that story that I didn't quote talked about how he's always had great exit velocities, before he was any good with the bat (and combining that with a new launch angle got him to where he is now). I posted a pretty similar comment to yours in the active Gonfalon thread.
   9. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2018 at 04:16 PM (#5723417)
How soon before they start implanting Perfect Swing™ devices in the elbow to give the batter the best combination of exit velocity & launch angle?

Too late. In my head, and in the heads of everyone here, you are now BOE-TEE.

You can thank David Bote.

Trivia for today: With I!chiro done playing, if Jose Reyes retired tomorrow, who would be MLB's active leader in career stolen bases?
You could have given me his initials, team, and position, as well as all of his career stats, and I still would not have guessed.

You do vote don't you, or are you unpatriotic??!!

My favorite exchange from The Breakfast Club is Emilio Estevez's cool jock character talking to Anthony Michael Hall's dorky brain character after AMH flashes his fake ID:

"What do you need a fake ID for?"
"So I can vote!"

Angels shut out Detroit at home, and get back to .500. Thanks for being terrible, Tigers!

If Yadier was a decent defensive catcher, he would be among the best catchers in baseball this year.

   20. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2018 at 07:29 PM (#5723554)
Have to love that 'aggressive' baserunning, they have cost us several runs the past week, but you won't hear anyone complaining about it, instead they will wait for one of the times it works to our advantage and rave about it and make up bs numbers about how many runs this crappy aggressive style has improved the team, when it's not even that aggressive, it's just dumbass baserunning.
   21. phredbird Posted: August 08, 2018 at 07:33 PM (#5723559)
argh, i saw that ... why isn't oquendo's pixie dust working on this bunch?

argh, i saw that ... why isn't oquendo's pixie dust working on this bunch?

Because the manager isn't listening to Oquendo, like Matheny did. Oquendo knows who are idiot baserunners and who aren't and coached Matheny on how to play it safely. This guy doesn't care one bit about established data and is trying to re-establish the data from scratch and ignore the previous two months of data gathering.

Or, hear me out, there is no such thing as oquendos magic and the cards have a number of poor baserunning and defensive players who make bad plays.

I'm not ready to say Sevy is broken - it may just be a tired arm thing or just a rough patch - but it's time to be concerned. He's not right at all.

Can’t imagine Giolito is done giving it up, is he? And he has to give them some outs given the length of last nights game.

   41. Bote Man Posted: August 08, 2018 at 09:03 PM (#5723632)
Juan Soto has just been ejected as he stood into the batter's box. Greg Gibson looks like he wants to ensure that everyone knows he is Da Man.

EDIT: Now 4 minutes later Kevin Long has been ejected, I think for uttering, "Because he said so!" to the HP ump. I'm guessing he meant that if Juan Soto thinks it's a ball, then it MUST be a ball, his strike zone command is that good.
   42. Chip Posted: August 08, 2018 at 09:06 PM (#5723633)
Devers with a double and HR in his first game back from the DL is encouraging, but even more so is seeing Xander hitting a ball off the wall to right center - oppo power suggests the hand he got hit on isn’t bothering him too much.

now an injury because of aggressiveness... .or Bader is absolutely the worst head first slider in baseball history. (Bader was on first not Jose Martinez for those who are watching gameday)
   47. bunyon Posted: August 08, 2018 at 09:19 PM (#5723649)
I don't know what Soto said but unless it was very, very, very bad, that was a terrible ejection.

He didn't look angry at all. I'd guess Gibson just doesn't want to hear anything from a 19 year old. What an #######.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2018 at 09:21 PM (#5723652)
If you ever want to see one of the worst slides in baseball history, you will need to watch Harrison Bader's slide in this game.... at no point in time can you use the word "slide" for that belly flop.
   49. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 08, 2018 at 09:25 PM (#5723657)
What a terrible attempt at that pitch in the dirt by Wieters, and it leads directly to a run. This game was over before then, but it's never fun to see a guy take a play off.

Also, Tyler Chatwood has been unimpressive this year that I can't wrap my head around the idea that he was actually someone who got a multi-year FA deal.

as pointed out, the Cubs have now played 21 games in the past 21 days, (one day off, but a double header in there also) so there is a possibility of a bit of fatigue for them now. That is the thing about baseball, it's an endurance contest.

The Cubs aren't going to really extend their lead on the division, playing against non-divisional rivals, it's the head to head crap that is going to matter.

Also, Tyler Chatwood has been unimpressive this year that I can't wrap my head around the idea that he was actually someone who got a multi-year FA deal.
Something something spin rate, blah blah blah road splits, yada yada...he was pretty much the last one in the door before the Great Market Correction happened.
