The biggest thing happening in baseball right now is that I am weirded out by Marcell Ozuna's beard.

AL league ERA right now is 4.51. Since 2013 it's bounced around between 3.81 and 4.37. We're not halfway through the season yet, but that's a LOT of runs.

From the YES network:
With his 118.9-mph line drive single last night, Giancarlo Stanton now has 2 of the 3 hardest-hit balls in #MLB this season.

He's played five games.

More waiver pouncing for SF Giants. OF Joey Rickard claimed off waivers from Baltimore. RHP Nick Vincent transferred to the 60-day injured list. Rickard will be optioned to AAA Sacramento.

The Giants aint playin round no mo!

STAT OF THE DAY:

In days gone by, leading the league in complete games was the mark of a workhorse.

Not so much now, as in 2018, no pitcher had more than ... TWO.

In 2019, one man in the NL and one in the AL each stand alone with 2 CG on the season. Any ideas who these gentlemen are? Kinda random.. no Verlanders or Scherzers here.
   10. Blastin Posted: June 21, 2019 at 04:00 PM (#5854755)
Aaron Judge was out for exactly two months.

And how many people thought the Yankees would have played this well without him (and everyone else)?

He's leading off tonight.

Brooks Pounders on in relief for the Mets now. 4-3 Cubbies in the 5th at the Friendly Confines.

They say that Brooks and his 3 brothers are opening a burger joint named Quarter Pounders.

Am I a bad fan if I root for opposing players to make contact against Cubs pitchers so we don't have to hear the g*****n "fans won't strike out with Gold Coast Bank" plug again?
   15. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 21, 2019 at 04:29 PM (#5854771)

What're the odds Brach gets DFA'd when Kimbrel joins the big club? There's absolutely nothing about him that impresses me, and his numbers are crap.

Also, he's a weird pencil-necked pasty dude with a goofy delivery, and thus he creeps me out.
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 21, 2019 at 05:15 PM (#5854778)
What the hell was Rizzo doing there?
   20. Spahn Insane Posted: June 21, 2019 at 05:17 PM (#5854780)
I was gonna say, is there some weird circumstance beyond the descriptive powers of Gameday that justifies Rizzo making the third out at third while representing the tying run in the bottom of the 8th?
   21. Man o' Schwar Posted: June 21, 2019 at 05:19 PM (#5854783)
I think normally you can get from 1st to 3rd on one of those bloopy hits that fall in no mans land. But Rizzo's not quick, and the OF picked it up cleanly, and he was stuck.

His eyes were faster than his feet.
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 21, 2019 at 05:21 PM (#5854784)
The ball was well placed between the left fielder and short stop. Left fielder put up his glove that he was gonna catch it even though it was clear pretty quickly that it was going to fall. Rizzo just wound up in between second and third. I’d have to see another replay but if he hadn’t stopped, he likely makes third safely. Maybe he forgot how many outs there were because he should’ve been running all out and didn’t appear to be.

congrats to Yu Darvish, the first man to record 10 straight no-decision starts since Phillies' Randy Lerch in 1977.

that was a 101-win PHI team, so Lerch went 0-0 with only 2 "quality starts" in the bunch from late May til mid-July - and the Phils won 6 of those games anyway.

he wound up 10-6 in 28 starts and a dismal 80 ERA+.

he somehow got in 1100 MLB IP with an 83 career ERA+

i'm glad i don't have to listen to them today. MLBTV, in it's infinite wisdom, blacks out angels games here in Palm Springs (they also black out the Dodgers, which infuriates me no end).

But I have the Fox West feed on YouTubeTV. They aren't the worst ever.

well you missed how the fact that the great Shildt showed up to watch the Albert interview somehow made him exceptional because other managers wouldn't do that with an opposing player.

06.21... Orioles signed RHP Kieran Lovegrove to a minor league contract.
Spin: The 24-year-old hurler was cut loose by the Giants early last week after posting a miserable 8.69 ERA across 19 2/3 innings at Double-A Richmond. He'll try to right the ship and get his career back on track in Baltimore.

[my take: I've got a good feeling about this guy!]

I assume all the focus on Pujols is due to the game being in STL? (I'm watching with the sound off; my favorite way to watch a baseball game.)

Anyway, old Pujols gives me a sad emoji. He used to be a baseball god, destroying all in his path. And now, well, he's a guy with a roster spot. That he doesn't especially deserve. I realize that we all lose in the end, but man is it depressing.

Victor Robles mentioned yesterday that he has moved closer to the plate so he can have more coverage on outside pitches. He was just hit by Dallas Keuchel after two other pitchers nearly plucked him.

Well, Rosenthal posed as a pool boy and the lady of the house was getting an all-over tan in the backyard...

He only struck out dangerous rookie slugger Austin Riley to preserve a 4-3 lead is all. A beat reporter said he was no longer pulling the ball toward his glove side, which had been his big problem when he was so wild a month or so ago. This is Rosenthal's second cromulent outing, but I have no idea if he is "fixed" for good.

OK, I must have fanboyed that account: he got Riley to ground out sharply to 3B, where Anthony Rendon made a solid, but terrifying throw across the diamond to put out Riley and end the inning.

We regret the error. Those responsible have been sacked.

OK, now that the unthinkable has happened by beating the Braves tonight, I am willing to concede that the Nats have a whiff of a zephyr of a prayer of climbing out of this deep hole they started with. The Nats bullpen (or its usage and management) is not 3-bottles-of-bourbon bad lately* and most of the guys up and down the lineup have been hitting, and hitting for (juiced ball) power. If they can shore up the #4 and #5 spots in their pitching rotation, they might have a chance of a prayer.

Maybe Deivi is learning, maybe it's just the late starters rounding into form, but I need to see the Nats at .500 before I start believing.

* I have not examined this, but it's possible that the bullpen improvement started right about the time that the Nats brought up Paul Menhart as the replacement pitching coach.
   83. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 22, 2019 at 12:03 AM (#5854903)
The umpires gave the Dodgers an outright gift run tonight. Max Muncy was on first with no one out when there was a liner to short. Rockies SS Brendan Rodgers caught it and fired to first for the double play, except Muncy raised his arms and started waving them around as he was going back to first, and the ball deflected off his forearm and into the dugout. The umpires sent Muncy to third, where he scored on a sac fly.

My gawd, the Diamondbacks are putting on a clinic--on what NOT to do defensively in a baseball game. Archie Bradley is displeased, to put it mildly.

They lollygagged a sure double-play throw when Belt was jogging to 1B, allowing him to reach safely on the force-out. Then Marté misplayed a ball to deep LCF on the run, and then the throw home was cutoff allowing the run to score when he otherwise likely would've been out.
