HOW WILL THE REDS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. salvomania Posted: June 26, 2019 at 12:57 PM (#5856057)
I think it would be funny if once all the Yankees hurt players returned, they became a maddeningly inconsistent up-and-down type of team instead of the 104-win-pace juggernaut they've been with all the subs.
   3. salvomania Posted: June 26, 2019 at 01:01 PM (#5856058)
I know how terrible the Cardinals have been in 2019, so the fact that they're in 3rd place, only 2.5 games out, suggests that the other teams are underplaying expectations as well.

Cubs on pace to take the division with just 88 wins...
   4. TomH Posted: June 26, 2019 at 01:27 PM (#5856072)
Hey, weren't the Cubs supposed to finish last? That is not underplaying :)
   5. TomH Posted: June 26, 2019 at 01:31 PM (#5856073)
stat of the day:
(not that we would have trouble making up, or be surprised by, insane ##s about the Orioles...)

The Orioles ERA, divided by league avg ERA, is 1.39.

I downloaded the lahman database of team stats, and looked from 1946 to 2001. The worst full-season ERA/lgERA (*not* park adjusted, mind you) was ... 1.39; the 1954 Philadelphia Athletics. The best was the famous 1966 Koufaxian Dodgers, at 0.73.

So the O's are on pace for ignominiousness, or something.

There were a few “maybe not historically bad” comments when the Orioles started the season 5-5, but since then they’ve gone 17-52, a .246 winning percentage. If they keep that pace for the remainder of the season, they’d end up ~ 42-120. Could be worse if they “slump”.
   7. rconn23 Posted: June 26, 2019 at 02:08 PM (#5856091)
Yankees starting to chip away. It would be great if Paxton could get on the mound and actually pitch the next few innings.

Still better than the '62 Mets!

DJ LOLOLeMahieu. Now hitting .338, ties the game.

One swing from D.J., and the folks are as good as the people!

(With apologies to Chuck Thompson.)

LeMahieu, after moving out of Coors, on pace to shatter career highs in runs, hits, doubles, homers, rbi, and slugging pct.

Someone should tell Judge about a little thing called launch angle. With his strength he should be able to hit 40 homers.

I'm sure there are better relievers than Ottavino, but I'd take him over anyone else right now. Boone surprisingly uses him perfectly. His strand rate is absurd. I don't know how anyone gets a hit off him.

He walks a lot of batters, but I don't think anyone feels anxious with him on the mound. It's like Seinfeld's joke about taking a cab ride in NYC - your life is very much in danger, yet you're perfectly at ease.

How long has that been going on? It's really annoying when watching a game.
   22. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 26, 2019 at 04:03 PM (#5856157)
Wow. Why did Rondon try for Nunez at home instead of to first base? You're up by 2 runs, get the sure out.
   23. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 26, 2019 at 04:08 PM (#5856159)
And instead of the inning being over and a 6-5 lead, it's a 7-6 deficit. Nice job, White Sox!

Funny, I can't find the exact answer.

2008?

Maybe.

Far too long is what we can all agree on.

Wow. Montoyo is going to blow this game without using his closer. So that's still a thing, apparently. You'd think that seeing Britton coming into the game would have reminded him.

SPONSORING STRIKEOUTS The Yankees are not selling the naming rights to their new stadium, but they have found a way to sell plays on the field. Since the All-Star break, every time a Yankees pitcher records a strikeout, the P.C. Richard whistle plays over the loudspeakers as part of a sponsorship deal

my take always has been that when the Yankees are on the road, the home team should play it every time the Yankees strike out (which is really often).
   38. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 26, 2019 at 05:43 PM (#5856192)
Lovely, I had to leave after the 8th, only to come back to find that not only they've blown the lead and then won it on a walkoff, but that the hated RED SOX blew it in the 9th and lost for what seems like the first time in a month. After those last two nights, I was wondering if they were ever going to lose another game!

And so Jolly Old sez: It's off to Jolly Old! The land of Green Belts, artificial turf, and a 385' center field fence!

Well, I'll be. You learn something every day. I was wondering what that whistle was all about.

But who's P.C. Richard, and why is he whistling?

But who's P.C. Richard, and why is he whistling?
Apparently, it’s a regional thing:
P.C. Richard & Son, commonly known as simply P.C. Richard, is the largest chain of private, family-owned appliance, television, electronics, and mattress stores in the United States.[1] Its 66 stores are located in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, with the majority of the stores located on Long Island and in the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. The company is also known for its trademark whistle jingle created by Soundsmith worker Leer Leary. It is used by the New York Yankees after striking out an opposing batter at Yankee Stadium.

You give your game away, try the subtle approach ...

Susan "voice made for flag semaphore" Waldman is as much of an analyst as I am a super model.

Somehow, she's only the second worst announcer in the Yankees' radio booth.

It's only nearing the midway point, but right now, it looks like whichever team takes the NL Central is just earning the right to get stomped by another team in October. None of these teams as they are seem like they're really poised to reel off a long winning streak, either.

And again, horrific with RISP. I'd love to see something more in-depth about this, because at a glance, that seems like the biggest issue for the Cubs. They have no trouble getting guys on base, but it's like as soon as someone gets to second, they start swinging like Corey Patterson.

The Nats are winning 7-1 and Sean Doolittle is warming up in the bullpen for the 2nd time. Warmed up. Sat down. Now warming up again SEVEN TO ONE!

For those who wonder why I'm not a fan of Deivi* Martinez.

* That intentional misspelling is my dig at Washington Nationals field manager Davey Martinez, for those of you hyper-literalists who are humor-impaired. It also denotes that I'm talking about Bad Davey and not Good Davey (Johnson).
