Gary Sánchez 1st inning 3-run HR gets Yankees off to a good start. There may be some questions about aspects of Sanchez’s defense, but he can hit. 14 HRs in 31 games.

What is it with Orioles and pop ups???

(oh, and Luke Voit)

SYNDROME!!!
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 21, 2019 at 08:18 PM (#5844403)
Gleyber Torres & Gary Sánchez each have 8 HRs against the Orioles this season. According to the Orioles broadcast, the only other Yankees with 8 HRs against the franchise in a season were Ruth & Gehrig, when the Orioles were still the St. Louis Browns. The Yankees still have 9 more games (and the rest of this one) against Baltimore, so the totals might change a bit.
   12. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 21, 2019 at 08:27 PM (#5844406)
Wheels coming off for Red Sox.

After a few innings visiting squanderville(boy do they really miss JD when he is not in the middle of that lineup), E-rod coughs up back to back jacks(one a 2 run shot), Sox now down 3-0 in the 4th. Been playing .600 ball since the 2-8 start, so no complaints with any of that, just hard to see them get a few runners on in each inning and not capitalise....
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 21, 2019 at 08:43 PM (#5844411)
Clint Frazier HRs again, the 100th HR against the Orioles this season, which is the earliest any team has given up that many, according to the Orioles somewhat demoralized TV broadcast. I’m thinking the Marlins may finish with a better record than the Orioles this season.

Syndrome again.

Watching the Rockies-Pirates game on GameDay, and Melky Cabrera just got charged with an "automatic strike." Anybody know what that is?

(3) If the batter refuses to take his position in the batter’s box
during his time at bat, the umpire shall call a strike on the
batter. The ball is dead, and no runners may advance.
After the penalty, the batter may take his proper position
and the regular ball and strike count shall continue. If the
batter does not take his proper position before three
strikes have been called, the batter shall be declared out.

So yeah, Cabrera apparently left the batter's box without asking for time, and the ump decided it was malicious or too long. Part of rule 5.04(b)
   16. Walt Davis Posted: May 21, 2019 at 08:50 PM (#5844416)
Cubs with 8 stranded through 4 innings today. I'm not sure I can watch them until this stops (and not replaced by simply never getting runners on).

#15 ... is this a new rule? What I've seen in the past** was if the batter wouldn't get in the box, the ump just told the pitcher to pitch. One fabulous time, the always fabulous (yet mediocre) Glenallen Hill had this happen to him so, basically mid-pitch, he jumped in the box and lined a double to the RCF gap.

** I'd be surprised if I've seen this more than 2-3 times.
   17. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 21, 2019 at 08:51 PM (#5844418)
Rowdy with another jack, Sox getting smoked now, down 6-0. Folding up tent, going home.....

Going to be another game back of NY after this. Houston and NY definitely the pick of the AL so far this year. I'm not confident in Rays magic holding together for a 95 win season.

Both teams have been outscored by 2+ runs a game but in different ways.

Orioles average game:
Scored 3.89, allowed 5.98

Marlins average game:
Scored 2.68, allowed 4.70

The real entertainers are in the AL West. Both the Mariners and Rangers are in the top 5 in both runs scored and runs allowed.

Nationals bullpen allows 3-run PH HR to JD Davis of the Mets in the 7th to turn a 3-1 lead into, well, 3-4.

I suppose that's not exactly news

Baez being out is bad for a host of reasons, one of which is Daniel Descalso gets five at-bats a game.
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 21, 2019 at 09:20 PM (#5844434)
Some detail on the Orioles ignominious achievement noted in #13:
Eddie Matz, ESPN Senior Writer

The Orioles have reached the century mark. The homer that Clint Frazier hit against David Hess is the 100th that the O's have allowed this season. They did it in 48 games, or nine games faster than the previous fastest (2000 Royals). Baltimore is on pace to surrender 338 homers, which would be 80 more than the current record. [emphasis added]

About goddamned time. I don’t know who this upstanding umpire was, but may the good lord bless him and may he serve as a shining beacon for his brethren.
   24. Crispix Attacksel Rios Posted: May 21, 2019 at 09:25 PM (#5844437)
The 1978 Orioles only gave up 107 home runs in the whole season. The 1992 Orioles only gave up 124.

I figured that would happen. I don't have faith in Edwards, but bringing in Kintzler there seemed unnecessary.

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
Pete Alonso now owns the Mets' franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break, with 16.

There are still SEVEN WEEKS until the All-Star break.
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 21, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5844447)
These two games have been positively brutal.
   31. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2019 at 09:49 PM (#5844448)
Nats grab lead, 5-4 - and let Mets tie it on a 420-foot HR by Pete Alonso in the 8th that soars about 20 feet above the short Citi Field LF foul pole. Keith Hernandez called it "Kingman-esque."

Alonso now first Met rookie to ever hit 16 HR before the All-Star Break - and wait, we're still in May. I guess I'm saying there's a chance.

Sox now down 8-1. That Thornburg for Shaw trade is the gift that just keeps on giving.

I will be surprised if the name Thornburg and MLB are uttered together next year....
   34. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 21, 2019 at 09:58 PM (#5844453)
10-1 Toronto now. It is officially somewhere between a pasting and a shellacking.....
   35. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 21, 2019 at 10:08 PM (#5844456)
12 men left. This is all Chili Davis' fault.
   36. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 21, 2019 at 10:14 PM (#5844458)
I'm just glad to see Frazier get back in a groove, even it may turn out to be for only a game. He was looking completely lost over the weekend against the Rays, both at bat and in the field.
   37. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2019 at 10:15 PM (#5844459)
That Thornburg for Shaw trade is the gift that just keeps on giving.

Shaw stiffed the Brewers on a .163 AVG and .549 OPS in 135 AB this year before being put down - er, placed on IL.

the Brewers did get to enjoy the Shaw bouquet for two years, though, before it went rancid and began to cause involuntary retching.

Pete Alonso now owns the Mets' franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break, with 16.

Dave Kingman had 29 before the break in 1976; I'm sure there have been others.

I'll bet Alonso's so-called record is the Mets' *rookie* record.

feels like Almora grounds into a lot of double-plays, so I get it.

Baez would get nothing but sliders low and away from me here, at least until it's 3-0. But I can't imagine he'd lay off.
   52. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 21, 2019 at 10:42 PM (#5844481)
Send it home, Javy. I don't wanna see the Cubs' pen again tonight.

Hey, we are all pulling for those battlers from NY who do it tough every year....wait, that's not right.

I must admit though, NY has that look about them this year where they seem to win games they shouldn't be winning...

Kershaw looked good today, JV took a no-no into the 7th...I just love good starting pitching.
