Now, here we have an interesting conundrum...

HOW WILL THE METS LOSE TODAY?

Weather in Chicago has taken a dramatic turn. It's about 30 or so degrees cooler today than yesterday (it's in the 40s now, and it was actually in the 90s earlier in the week), and it's been raining off and on all morning. Supposed to be more rain tomorrow, so they're supposedly going to try and get today's in.

the eddie butler experiment is not going well for the cubs.

Walking the bases loaded in the first inning? Bad idea.

First innings still killing Cubs SP.
   8. Moses Taylor, Unwavering Optimist Posted: May 19, 2017 at 02:41 PM (#5459463)
40 pitch first, 3 walks, 2ks, and 1 hit.
   9. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 19, 2017 at 02:57 PM (#5459478)
Butler has recorded as many walks as he has outs.
   10. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 19, 2017 at 03:08 PM (#5459484)
Butler has thrown 36 balls. Espino has thrown 21 pitches.

Anyone know why Kerry Wood is in the booth? His delivery is, dare I say it, wooden.
   13. Moses Taylor, Unwavering Optimist Posted: May 19, 2017 at 03:39 PM (#5459539)
I keep telling people Schwarber isn't Dunn or Luzinski in LF. People never believe me. If he keeps mixing in plays like this, maybe I'll make a little progress.

JD is gone for the weekend (maybe back Sunday) for his daughter's college graduation.
   15. Brian C Posted: May 19, 2017 at 04:01 PM (#5459569)
Ryan Dempster is in the booth for tomorrow's game.

Wood isn't terrible but he's clearly relieved whenever Len gives him something to talk about.

Baez really killed that inning with that stupid bunt attempt.
   16. Andere Richtingen Posted: May 19, 2017 at 04:21 PM (#5459589)
Mike Montgomery is not the guy you want pitching in the pissing down rain. This band of rain has been on the radar all day -- why did they not delay?
   17. Moses Taylor, Unwavering Optimist Posted: May 19, 2017 at 04:22 PM (#5459590)

I heard someone say they thought it's supposed to be worse tomorrow, but yeah, why not wait? Where am it's just steady but not hard.

I heard someone say they thought it's supposed to be worse tomorrow, but yeah, why not wait? Where am it's just steady but not hard.

It's also not going to last that long.
   19. Bote Man Posted: May 19, 2017 at 04:33 PM (#5459603)
If you think Kerry Wood is bad, you should (not) hear Ron Coomer on the radio.

"This is not a complete game as the rain picks up..."

Uh, Ron, that's "official game".

"And the Brewers take the lead 4-2."

Uh, Ron, make that 4-3 Brewers. Geeeeze!
   20. Bote Man Posted: May 19, 2017 at 04:37 PM (#5459609)
Actually, according to Weather Underground the rain in Chicago is supposed to tail off as the temperature slowly inches up through the evening. Go figure.

Probably.
   23. Jesus Frankenstein Posted: May 19, 2017 at 06:03 PM (#5459692)
Being outside Cubsland I have trouble understanding the Schwarber appeal looking at his stats (and his physique), but then I remember he's only 24 and just past 100 games played. Also he kinda reminds me of one of those Billy Beane guys that never really broke through.

If he ends up more Jason Giambi rather than Jeremy, more power to him.

TOOTBLAN is the early favorite.
   25. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 19, 2017 at 07:14 PM (#5459733)
Yeah, I wouldn't say he's the team's biggest problem, but if that bat doesn't start producing, then there's no justification for keeping him in the outfield.
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 19, 2017 at 07:22 PM (#5459736)
THESE WALKS ARE CLOGGING UP THE BASES
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 19, 2017 at 07:31 PM (#5459739)
Cub hitters looking like total chumps in that inning.

I am actually watching this game.

We struck out Trout! It's the highlight of the month.

Oh Jesus, Mets sideline reporter brought up others comparing Trout to Jeter and Puckett. And didn't mock them.

Gameday combined with Sling tv has spoiled me. I watch gameday and get an update about 2-3 pitches ahead of the tv, so then it helps prepare me to watch for an event....

At the game on Wednesday, and I keep glancing away from the "literal" life action in front of me to glance at a screen to see the result before the pitch... my gf was making fun of me because I couldn't cheat, but instinctively I kept trying to look somewhere for the results beforehand.

Stolen base by Grichuk, as Crawford dropped the on the target throw, but Grichuk was trying to pull a Red Sox and slide arm first with his left arm and then pull it back.
   38. frannyzoo Posted: May 19, 2017 at 08:54 PM (#5459783)
After a wild pitch to move a guy to second, Collins tells deGrom "nah, even on 3 and 2 to Trout, we're walking him. Even on 3 and 2." Wow.

I would instantly know she cheated on me if that happened. I'm fairly certain I don't have the genetic defect to be a Cubs fan and it has to be a recessive gene.

My brother is a Red Sox' fan, so I really do believe he is adopted, since my dad is still with my mom, who also likes the Yankees/Giants.

We won't have to tell him though, coz the next time the Red Sox win the World Series, is like more than 100 years in the future.

Barry Bonds hat 4 3-HR games in his career.
Does it make it any less awesome, if it's against the Rockies(2), Reds and Barves ?

Weren't the Reds and Braves pretty good teams for a good portion of his career? Especially the Braves pitching?
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 09:17 PM (#5459795)
Why did the Cubs give up Dexter F. ?

Because he had a career year on his free agent to be season, he's 30 years old and got an 82mil contract.

He was a 4.3 war player last year, his prior best was 2.8....he's a 2.5 war player, and is getting paid equal to a 3.5 war player.

That's why the Giants built their stadium close to the bay. Better chances to extinguish hopeless fans.

I really did not follow that, but I remember all that Dexter F. stuff from Cubs fans last year.
But, it's still early.

I am still aghast deGrom got out of the 7th inning.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 09:34 PM (#5459808)
McCarver is bad mouthing Wong for not going to second on a gap single.... Because the guy made a weak throw.... it's a ridiculous complaint for a team that has been toasted on the base paths more than their speed indicates.

   50. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 09:36 PM (#5459809)

No clue what the Cubs were thinking, Fowler went for about 10 mil more than most people thought he was going to get anyway, I'm thinking that the Cubs just decided that they had enough offense that they didn't need a guy like Fowler. Heck they acquired Jon Jay for almost nothing, and a healthy Jon Jay is a 1.8-2.3 war player(for 1/3rd the price and 1/5th of the commitment)
   51. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 19, 2017 at 09:36 PM (#5459811)
So the Cubs would not have any of that ?

They thought Schwarber and Heyward were going to be good.

Heyward's numbers are always fun to look at. People got excited when he hit three homers in four games, from April 21-24. Since then, he's slugging .161. He still hasn't hit a double all season.
   52. Jesus Frankenstein Posted: May 19, 2017 at 09:42 PM (#5459814)
Yankees had Rickie Weeks rung up on a 2-2 pitch, next pitch was a chopper to third that made Ronnie Torreyes look like he'd never played the postion....

Headley did one of those just last week.
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 09:54 PM (#5459818)
Gyorko with a triple off the wall, very next pitch Molina hits a double to the warning track.
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:06 PM (#5459826)
I'm not sure how that "sliding" glove by Nunez could be legal... it's about 3 inches beyond his natural fingers.
   55. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:07 PM (#5459827)
Broxton doing his normal craptastic performance. Up 0-2 to both batters and somehow allowing singles.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:11 PM (#5459828)
I've said it before, and I'm going to keep saying it after every one of his non-perfect appearances, the Cardinals need to release Broxton, and call up Mark Montgomery(minor league reliever who is 26 years old, has 5 seasons in AAA with a 2.98 era, 152 k's in 124 ip... he's a nobody, but he can't be worse than Broxton.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:12 PM (#5459830)
And an error on Gyorko stops us from getting the lead runner or the double play.. .
   58. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:17 PM (#5459834)
McCarver talking about the Giants bringing in Goryky's Hernandez because he's a very good bunter... I looked at the data and I'm not seeing much to say he is. Before this at bat, he's had 1 sacrifices, he has 3 bunt hits in 12 pa. (only bunt tool he has is speed, and I've seen plenty of fast hitters over the years who couldn't bunt for isht)

And tie game... our bullpen sucks...
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:21 PM (#5459836)
poor play/communication gives the Giants the 3-2 lead... Bowman would have beaten the runner easily if he goes home. (of course he struck out Panik on the previous pitch, but the ump apparently sucks)
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:28 PM (#5459840)
Bowman not having a good night, just walked the bases loaded...
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:33 PM (#5459841)
And a rain delay right now, should be a little bit of time before we resume.... I guess the best part of this is that the Giants can't be awarded a win for this game if it gets cancelled.
   62. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:34 PM (#5459842)
Matheny ejected before the rain delay, as again, this umpire has sucked tonight.
   63. Dillon Gee Escape Plan Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:35 PM (#5459844)
Jered Weaver should retire. This is just painful to watch.
   64. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:46 PM (#5459852)
Bowman not having a good night, just walked the bases loaded...

Well, he K'd Panik before he drove in the run with the ground out, got another grounder that was booted, and ball four to Belt on a 3-2 count was also strike 3 according to my eyes, to Gameday, and to the Giants announcers, and Busty Posey fouled off two tough 3-2 pitches before drawing a walk...

So yes, not a great outing, but in another universe it's a quick inning with no damage.
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:53 PM (#5459856)
Agree, I'm not down on Bowman at all, I think he's been a breath of fresh air the last two seasons, and I feel kinda bad for him, because he probably could be a serviceable 3rd/4th starter if he wasn't a rule five and the Cardinals bullpen didn't suck. (unless he gets lucky and becomes a closer or 8th inning guy, rule five probably has cost him about 10 mil on his career earnings--although he's probably up by a mil right about now.)
   66. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 10:56 PM (#5459859)
Speaking of bad umping, the other night when Rosenthal was walking off the field, Molina went up to him and it looked like he basically said "this ump sucks, you did well, don't let it affect your next performance."
   67. Snowboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:02 PM (#5459867)
Skies suddenly opened in Baltimore, bottom 10th, 3-3 vs TOR
   68. Snowboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:04 PM (#5459870)
And the tarp is out. In the time of one batter it went from dry to raining, and then after the break it's torrential.
   69. Rickey! No. You move. Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:05 PM (#5459871)
I just said to myself "HELL YEAH, KIRK SUZUKI!" This game is stupid and dumb.
   70. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:13 PM (#5459875)
Tarp is off the field, game is expected to resume in 5 minutes(10:16) but there is more rain coming.

Currently bases loaded 2 outs top of the 7th inning, 3-2 Giants (they just re-showed 4 called balls, all of which were probably strikes... a couple were obvious strikes...in Bowman's appearance)
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:17 PM (#5459877)
Crawford makes an out on the first pitch, at 10:16.... (just checking the time on bbtf)
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:23 PM (#5459884)
Back to back singles gives the Cardinals first and third to open up the 7th, Peralta with a hit in his first pa in weeks.
   73. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:26 PM (#5459887)
Fowler has looked good for the last few days, looked really good on that swing. Cardinals up 5-3 with a 3 run homerun from Fowler

   75. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:28 PM (#5459891)
Nice play by the Giants third baseman(Arroyo) on a slow roller down the line to get Pham.

Yep. I ##### about the Cardinals bullpen, but the Cardinals reliever 4.00 era isn't on par with the Nats 5.32, Padres 5.32 or Mariners 5.49.

   78. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:37 PM (#5459900)
Tuivailala not having success today...back to back singles. He's not looking bad, just not getting good results.

I get his defensive value, but he needs to put up a 110 ops+ to be worth his money, we aren't talking about elite hitting, we are just talking about good hitting. (He's at 1.1 war right now, which is great, on pace for a 4+ war season, but the money was because his bat should have come around)
   80. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5459903)
If Cecil is decent, he would have been pitching here... unfortunately a struggling tuvi is stuck here and the results are what they are. 5-4 Cardinals now.
   81. Bote Man Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5459904)
Noah Frank @NoahFrankWTOP
By my count, Nats bullpen ERA is now an NL-worst 5.44, having thrown an MLB-low 120.2 innings

It takes quite the effort to be so bad in so few innings.
   82. cardsfanboy Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:44 PM (#5459907)
I think Carpenter screwed up again.... although Molina was out of position, Grichuk's throw probably does beat the runner.... but oh well our defense sucks both physically and at the decision making process.
   83. salvomania Posted: May 19, 2017 at 11:46 PM (#5459908)
With the game on the line---Birds up 5-4 in the 8th with 2 on and 2 out---Birds bringing in Brett Cecil to face a lefty.

Lefties in 2017 are hitting .464/.528/.929 vs. Cecil (that's a 1.456 OPS).

What could possibly go wrong?

EDIT: He gets Panik to end the inning. May this be the start of a positive trend.

Padres who started the night tied with the Nats, have so far allowed just 1 run in 3 1/3 innings... but they are just in the fifth inning....yes it's going into the fifth inning and the Padres bullpen has already pitched 3 1/3 inning as their starter allowed 7 runs in 2/3rd of an inning(although their bullpen came into the game with a 6-0 score man on first and two outs, and then walked a guy, allowed a single(7th run of the inning), walked the next guy, walked the next guy (scoring a run)and got a strikeout.... )

Funny/sad part is that our bullpen doesn't look bad (except Broxton and Cecil) but the results don't actually often match their performance.

Oh blows this game.... And stupid defense from the Cardinals(notice a trend) allowed this inning to continue instead of getting the easy out on the runner trapped between second and third...

We really miss Oquendo.

Brandon Crawford got a bunch of pitches away, then finally reached out and poked one the other way to set up this Giants mini-rally that put them ahead. Very nice AB. Oh tried to walk him and he wasn't havin' it!

FIXED!

There is no tied, it went from Cardinals leading to Giants leading...no tied involved..Crawford set up the probable tie, and the eventual lead, but he didn't tie the game.

FIXED!

Now my comment doesn't make sense.... thanks for making me look bad.... oh wait, I do that all the time on my own... but still Pffftttt.

I have no faith in this team coming back with Wong, Adams, Fowler.... ...
   93. cardsfanboy Posted: May 20, 2017 at 12:13 AM (#5459923)
Wong isn't having a bad week, single for him. I'm assuming he is going to get picked off on the third pitch of Adams at bat.
   94. cardsfanboy Posted: May 20, 2017 at 12:14 AM (#5459924)
Well Adams swung at the first pitch and made an easy out.
So it's up to a red hot Fowler and an ice cold Pham.

If this pitcher has the guts to come close to the strike zone against Fowler, that ball is going to be punished.

reaches for an outside pitch, and blows it with an 3-1 count...

I hate f'ing baseball.

And now the exciting end of the game during which we stare at the umpires wearing headphones.

HOLY MOTHER OF POOP! JBJ just made a leaping catch against the deepest CF wall in Oakland to save the tie in the bottom of the 9th.

Even Roger Healy thought Jeannie was involved in that catch.

JBJ just stole a walk-off home run! Excellent catch.
