I’m a bit worried about the Yankees today. They may have a let down about no longer playing the Orioles.

Yeah, the Indians are a bit tougher, but fortunately the Yanks are starting a stud whose ERA over his last 19 games is a Cy Youngish 2.13.

(And that's the end of this press conference. No questions allowed.)

So, Buehler's Dodgers down 13-7 during Take Me Out to the Ball Game. I didn't predict that!!

The Yankees post-Orioles ‘hangover’ has been worse than expected. Perhaps the batters will be sufficiently immune to save the day, but it’s certainly possible that the lead will be back to single digits. <sigh>

HOW WILL MICKEY CALLAWAY SCREW THE POOCH TODAY?

Deesha @DeeshaThosar
Mickey Callaway: "I bet 85 percent of our decisions go against the analytics and that's how it's always going to be, because that is just on paper. It doesn't take into account the person as a human being. ... So you're going against analytics most of the time."

"But I think there's something to be said when all things are equal and you're taking all these things into consideration. ... If it's a lot of points one way or the other, I think that's something to take into consideration to try and make a better decision."
   25. rconn23 Posted: August 15, 2019 at 09:04 PM (#5871825)
Well, the Yankees had the best record against teams with a winning record heading into tonight. Not sure if that will still hold. Now that it's a total blowout, I would just blow out Chance Adam's arm and not waste any actual pitchers.

To quote the vacationing Dock Ellis On Acid, that was a surprisingly nice roly-poly catch by Schwarbird there (for a big guy). It became the 1st out of the 7th.
   28. Howie Menckel Posted: August 15, 2019 at 09:41 PM (#5871832)
Adams has scattered 9 hits and 2 walks in getting 11 outs while mopping up for Yanks.

it's kind of cruel for yoyoing RPs these days - every out you get beyond 3 gets you that much closer to a demotion, regardless of how well you pitched.

if he tossed 4 scoreless, "hey, nice work, kid - and here's your bus ticket. see you soon - maybe!"

MIKE FORD IS PITCHING???
   31. Brian C Posted: August 15, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5871839)
Rowan Wick with a really hard-luck ninth - an error by Bote on a grounder and a seeing-eye weak grounder that got by Happ account for two of the three runners he allowed. Frankly I'd have left him in the game instead of bringing in Strop - with better defense, he'd be out of the inning already, and Strop is too shaky these days to come in with runners on.
   32. Brian C Posted: August 15, 2019 at 10:11 PM (#5871840)
Geez, another hit off Happ's glove, although harder hit this time. Defense killing the Cubs in this inning.

   37. Brian C Posted: August 15, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5871846)
So Strop was shaky as is sadly usual these days, getting zero outs after facing two hitters, letting a run score, and loading the bases. And now Derek Holland has to come in to try to get the save against Harper. There was just no reason not to let Wick keep pitching - he's been the best guy in the pen for weeks now and wasn't being hit hard.

I kind of figured the Cubs were gonna blow it when Strop loaded the bases with the HBP. Perfect blend of bad breaks, bad pitching, questionable bullpen management, and getting beat by a great hitter.

But also Derek Holland is completely ####### useless

Yeah, there's a reason why the Giants dumped him. He's been wholly unimpressive when called upon. Strop sucks now, so I guess I can't blame Joe for going to Holland there, but Strop shouldn't have been in the game to begin with.

Just a demoralizing loss and another thread to the yarn that this team is a disaster on the road.

Incidentally, "consecutive swear words" is also a good nickname for the Cubs bullpen.

Why is Callaway keeping this Gagnon person in? Is Diaz that bad?
   53. Howie Menckel Posted: August 15, 2019 at 10:57 PM (#5871873)
yes

hapless Diaz, after watching 3 Braves HR off Gagnon in the 9th, walks the leadoff hitter on 4 pitches at 10-8.

ball 1 on the next batter, and an angry catcher Ramos throws the ball back to the mound about like he wishes Diaz would throw it.

3 strikes later, it's ballgame and Diaz has a cheap SV.

14 combined hits for Alonso, Rosario, Ramos.

- He’s slugging 77 points higher against lefties this season than righties
- 1st Phillies walk-off grand slam w/ the team trailing since 1983 (Ozzie Virgil)

Wild game so far in Oakland - scoreless through 3, then Astros get 2 in the top of the 4th; A's respond with 4 in their half.
Astros scrap back with 1 in the 5th and another in the 6th - and then presumptive 2019 AL MVP blasts a homer to put the A's up again.
Matt Olson, inspired by his fellow Matt's awesomeness, also homers.

Mixed in with all this mess was the first big-league home run for 30-year-old career minor-league second baseman Corban Joseph, finally given a shot after hitting .371 in AAA this season (as Crash Davis put it: "That's a career, man."). Here's hoping Joseph tears it up for the rest of the season, and brings great good fortune to the green & gold.

If Rays don’t tie it up in 9th, Morton will become the first pitcher since Scherzer on 6/21/17 to lose a game while striking out at least 10 and not allowing an earned run

..............

Mets announcer Keith Hernandez sagely declares that he doesn't like the positioning of Royals SS against white-hot JD Davis, saying he is playing him as too much of a pull hitter and leaving up the middle wide open.

of course on the next pitch, the ball is RIGHT AT the SS, who has a tailor-made DP.

so Diaz walks his first batter to force in a run - even after I gave him a 20-minute "meditation period" in my DVR universe before I made him toss his first pitch. see post 86.

then a hard-hit single to CF for 4-1

then the Slam that wasn't, as noted by Bote Man (who is docked for missing Saturday's BBTF softball game).

so not 8-1, but 4-1.

if Callaway is not trying to get fired by inserting hapless Diaz - the Charlie Brown of RPs - into a bases-loaded, no-out scenario, then he is even dumber than I knew.

A couple of minor injury things:

—J.D. Davis was removed due to a tight right calf. He called it preventative and said he doesn’t expect to miss time.

—Robert Gsellman has been dealing with a sore triceps for a couple of days and was unavailable.

Not any more! No sooner does Jon Miller remark that the D-Backs could bring the tying run to the plate than Adam Jones hits a 3-run circuit clout to tie it up.

SFG so far has blown a 7-2 lead
a look at the standings suggests this is suboptimal

Apparently, this mythical "closer" creature is mythical.

A's pull out a loooong one, finally beating the Astros 3-2 in 13 innings.
Corban "The Career" Joseph scored the winning run. The A's are undefeated since bringing .371-hitting Joseph up from AAA.

And after Joseph made a brutal error in the tenth that turned a 1-2-3 inning into (after a post error walk) a runners on first and second nail biter. Was happy
For Joseph he got the chance to redeem himself as he looked pretty mortified
