I'm not sure how the Angel bullpen will blow a day off, but I'm not counting it out.

Will the Cubs/Dodgers game be settled before the winning team's last AB today?

If the Cubs go walkoff again today, it won't matter that they don't have a good closer option.
   3. salvomania Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:22 PM (#5696294)
By my reckoning, Reds' C Tucker Barnhart has now reached base eight consecutive times: a single in the 9th inning Saturday against the Pirates, then in yesterday's route of the Tigers two singles a double, a walk and a HBP; and so far today, a single and another HBP.

EDIT: And immediately after I write that he flies out to end the streak.

You're saying "Pantsless Brandon" Morrow isn't a good option?
   5. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:28 PM (#5696299)
Lester's gonna be giving this ump a lot of dirty looks today. That's 3 or 4 borderline pitches that have gone against him so far (all right on the edge of the box, so could theoretically go either way).
   6. salvomania Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:29 PM (#5696302)
Michael Wacha coming back to earth a little: after 10 straight starts in which he allowed no more than 2 runs, he got shelled last start (9 runs in 4 innings) and has just been lifted in the fourth, down 3-1 to the Phillies after having allowed 8 baserunners.

EDIT: And now Gameday says "injury delay" so maybe lifting him in the 4th has more to do with some injury than with the 8 baserunners allowed...

EDIT: Yeah, just checked on mlb.tv and they showed a wincing Wacha during a mound meeting and coach Mike Maddux motioning to the pen...
   7. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:29 PM (#5696303)
Pantless Morrow would be more likely to get a save than Justin Wilson, so I'm not not saying that.

Willson: "I know just what to do! Go-go gadget mound visit to the rescue!"
   9. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:33 PM (#5696311)
My biggest disappointment this season is that Willson hasn't forced the issue on the mound visit rule. I just want to know what the umps will do if someone tries to take that 7th visit. The curiosity is killing me.

I hope it involves tackling.

I read that as tickling first, and that would also be ok.
   12. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:39 PM (#5696316)
Strike 1 to Zobrist was a ball top of the inning...

Helluva play by Turner in the shift, basically as the 2b, robbing Heyward of a hit. Also great job getting Bryant (who had to pause so the ball wouldn't hit him).
   13. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:40 PM (#5696321)
Hit and run pays off nicely, as the ball went right to where Taylor was. Taylor, btw, was the only guy on that side of the field due to the shift so interesting to see him covering 2nd on a potential throw.

Now that the season has started, you've walked back on the wolverines. I see how it is.

No no, tackling then wolverines. And maybe some tickling in there too.

Dodgers making pretty good contact against Lester so far.

Ok, that works. Incidentally I have Willy on my fantasy team and it would be nice if he hit a homer once in a while. Not that anyone wants to hear about people's fantasy woes.
   18. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:56 PM (#5696336)
3 of his 4 HRs this year came in one weekend against the White Sox. So yeah, he's ridiculously overdue.
   19. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:58 PM (#5696338)
If anyone could score from 2nd on a suicide squeeze (with 2 outs), it'd be Javy, right?

EDIT: He stole 3rd. He's 13 for 14 in SBs this year.

EDIT 2: Oh, wtf. Wild pitch, they said Lester swung so strike 3. Lester didn't run to first, so they got him in time (Javy strolled home). Sure didn't look like a swing at all.

EDIT: Yeah, not a swing. Bullshit.
   20. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:59 PM (#5696340)
Surprisingly his OPS is still pretty good so one would think the homers will come.
   21. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:09 PM (#5696349)
Almora played that one oddly. Not a completely direct route, and slowed up at the end. Probably should have caught it.
   22. salvomania Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:10 PM (#5696351)
Going to the pen early usually ends up poorly for the Cardinals... Mayers gave some good relief after Wacha had to exit, but Brett Cecil into what is now a tie game is very scary...
   23. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:10 PM (#5696352)
Well done Heyward and Contreras. Taylor would have been toast had he gone before on Schwarber, ends up toast anyway.

I believe the Dodgers are a very good fielding club, But the Cubs are a cut above. Not sure how many teams throw out Taylor on that play.

Mighty Scooter and Eugenio go back-to-back in the 6th to put the Reds up 4-2. Those two have to end up in the All-Star game, right? NL batting average leader Scooter Gennett (how is that even possible), and .950 OPSing 3rd baseman Eugenio
   29. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:25 PM (#5696368)
From the way Pat has been describing the Dodgers' contact, if the wall were at the warning track, this game would be about 8-0 at this point.
   30. perros Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:27 PM (#5696369)
I was just about to say thats true the whole series. Lots of outs on the track.

Lester's a ground ball guy. Dodgers are hitting a lot of deep balls in the air - hitting them hard. There's another one.

Looked like Rizzo was looking at Almora while running, so not a straight steal. Almora just whiffed.
   34. perros Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:33 PM (#5696380)
More competition this year, but I expect to see both of the teams again in the NLCS.

Schwarbomb.
   36. perros Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:34 PM (#5696384)
He whacked that one good.
   37. Don August(us) Cesar Geronimo Berroa Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:37 PM (#5696386)
The Reds have been playing Scott Shebler in the leadoff spot and Tucker Barnhart 2nd. The fast up-the-middle guys (Peraza and Hamilton) are hitting 7th and 9th. It's like Bizarro-Dusty.

The OBPs of the Reds starting lineup today, in batting order position:

1 .345
2 .350
3 .428
4 .373
5 .384
6 .355
7 .308
8 pitcher
9 .291

That's actually pretty nice. Too bad the starting pitching is so weak.
   38. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:38 PM (#5696388)
That's what I get for talking up the D. Just an off throw.

Suarez might be at the mercy of who gets voted in to start. If Bryant wins the fan vote, it might take a spot he could get (not that I don't think Bryant doesn't deserve it, but if you're someone who weighs current year heavier he's behind a number of guys; he should be there and he was a pretty big snub last year IMO).

It also might be just one of those 2 in addition to Votto, since usually bad teams don't get 3 reps.
   40. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:42 PM (#5696392)
Well, that was a incredibly generous strike 2 to Hernandez. That was at least 6 inches outside.
   41. perros Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:45 PM (#5696397)
This series reveals the Dodgers big weakness -- when they aren't hitting home runs they can't score otherwise. So many left on base, in scoring position, etc.
   42. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:47 PM (#5696399)
Javy is smoking them today too.

My guess is that Votto doesn't make it. I know he has a pretty nice OPS, but, it is not top 10. He has only 7 hr and 36 rbi, isn't doing that well in fan voting...

edit: and Reds win! Since starting 3-18, they have gone 25-27.
   44. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:51 PM (#5696405)
Just leave Bryant at leadoff until he goes on a homer binge.

Who is the Cubs hitting coach? They're soing a helluva job going with Stipling's pitches and driving them. He's really just a little less sharp than what's become normal for him.
   49. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:59 PM (#5696415)
Chili Davis! Noted Dwight Gooden owner.

Looked it up to see if my memory was correct and apparently Chili was 13-29 (.448) lifetime against Gooden.
   50. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 04:03 PM (#5696419)
Who is the Cubs hitting coach?

Chili Davis. They fired their hitting coach after last season (well, basically their entire staff under Maddon). This year they've emphasized contact and de-emphasized "launch angle". Cubs BA is way up, and ISO way down. K rate is also down though. With mostly the same players these 4 years, the only change is the hitting coach this offseason (and guys are a little older, but the Cubs still have the lowest weighted age for position players in the league this year).

From a Cubs blog:

2018 - 17th in ISO, 4th in AVG, T-9th in K-rate
2017 - 10th in ISO, 16th in AVG, 20th in K-rate
2016 - 7th in ISO, 14th in AVG, 16th in K-rate
2015 Season - 10th in ISO, 29th in AVG, 30th in K-rate

A little surprised to see Lester still out there, but I do understand it. He hasn't been himself today, but only 5 hits and 3 walks isn't horrible (only 1 K).

Almora!
   54. perros Posted: June 20, 2018 at 04:22 PM (#5696437)
The Cubs are making me sick, but admittedly in a good baseball way.
   55. perros Posted: June 20, 2018 at 04:27 PM (#5696441)
Moses -- interesting. One of my favorite things about baseball is the constant adjustment in competition. For instance, OPS this season is higher against the shift than not. I might suggest it hurts the shakier fielding clubs.

It's hard not to like this Cubs team, and how they are managed. Even if Maddon frustrates your reasonable expectations at times.

   61. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 20, 2018 at 04:38 PM (#5696455)
I bet they can't review whether or not Bryant made the turn, but the ump on the field indicated he did. They seemed to be reviewing the tag - which did beat him.

Just like the check swing earlier, Cubs seem to have been screwed (through these biased eyes).
   62. Meatwad Posted: June 20, 2018 at 04:40 PM (#5696459)
I only caught the end of the tv replay. Since I jist got home from work so i can only complain about the bryant call.

Comeback looking unlikely today. Just glad to win that first one.
