One year removed from his first start, Dylan Bundy still building identity in starting rotation - Baltimore Sun

Aces don’t usually throw 92 MPH.

In 32 starts since joining the rotation this time last year, Bundy is 16-13 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.269 WHIP while striking out 7.8 batters per nine innings. This year, 12 of his 18 starts qualify as quality ones, and his 4.33 ERA leads the team. His peripheral stats indicate the 4.41 ERA could be flattering — his fielding-independent pitching (FIP), which calculates ERA based on factors in a pitcher’s control, is 5.02 as a starter.

When he worked as a reliever last year, and even after he transitioned into the rotation, he was pitching without his slider to relieve possible pressure on his arm. But his fastball last year averaged 95 mph and exploded out of his hand. This year, the average is down to 92 mph on his fastball, but he’s added the slider back to his repertoire and dominated with it early in the season.

He believes what he’ll ultimately be is somewhere between those two pitchers.

Some do...but I doubt anyone is going to confuse Dylan Bundy and Greg Maddux any time soon.

Depends on what the other pitches are, and the overall command. Bundy is averaging 92.1. That's middle of the pack (34th of 70) among qualified starters. He's just behind Kluber (92.5) and ahead of Arrieta (92.0).

Only 10 IP-qualified starters are averaging 95.

He threw even harder than 95 in High School I believe (played near where I live), so interesting how his speed is already progressing downward.

I'll bet he's throwing over 100 now, if you measure him with that same high school gun.
