OPENING DAY!

That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favorite song
The nights are getting warmer it won’t be long
Won’t be long till the summer comes
Now that the boys are here again

With all due respect to last night, THIS is Opening Day! Accept no substitutes! Prepare for pitches, catches, hits, homers, strikeouts, walks, hit-batsmen, the mental game, hot dogs, peanuts, cracker jacks, the unwritten rules, signs, stolen bases, well-turned double plays, the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, the seventh-inning stretch, heckles, blown calls, rounding third and heading for home, sun, rain, snow, grass, turf, pinstripes, broken bats, belief, hope, curses, superstitions, young guns, veterans, aces, scrubs, calls to the bullpen, the radio, Vin Scully, the first pitch, the final out, this is the year, Sweet Caroline, Thank God I’m A Country Boy, Roll Out the Barrel, Deep in the Heart of Texas, Hang on Sloopy, I Love LA, New York, New York, Meet The Mets, Tessie, Boog’s Barbecue, Racing Sausages, Racing Presidents, Racing Pierogies, Ivy, the Green Monster, The Hefty Bag, McCovey Cove, Tal’s Hill, the Western Metal Building, hanging catwalks, the B&O Warehouse, injuries, idiots, heroes, villains, fair balls, foul balls, 60 feet 6 inches and 90 feet to first. BASEBALL IS BACK.

This has been a cheesy message.

Section 515, Row 35 of Rogers Centre here I come! Go Jays! Tonight is game 1 of Halladay's second Cy Young season.

Josh Illes, of Birmingham, Ala., has a slightly lighter take: "Opening Day is the only day of the year that I don't feel bad when I totally ignore my children."

If that's a *lighter* take, I'd hate to see what mlb.com considers to be dark humor...

Complaining: The National Pastime.

By the way, this is as good a place as any to state that MLB At-Bat for the iPhone is pretty freakin' great.

GameDay has the Cle-Tex lineups up, except that Texas doesn't have a 1B.
I think that makes the Indians the favourites there.
(Sidenote: who is their 1B? Blalock?)
EDIT: I'm an idiot, Davis right?

Myrtilla, ere the season starts,
Or e'er the primal ball be thrown
If you would win this callous heart's
Affection for your very own,
This counsel, blooming, fresh and frondent-
Accept it from your correspondent.
Back in the days of Old Cap Anse,
'Twas reckoned cute to spoof a dame,
And famed was her incognitance
About the so-called national game;
And comment feminine was silly.
That was before your day, Myrtilly.
For, now, Myrtilly, I admit
Your knowledge far transcends mine own;
You know an error from a hit-
A quaver from a semitone;
You never say, "How small the bat is!"
You never have to ask who that is.
Nay, Myrt, too well you like the game;
You are too true a devotee;
My Blue-Print is the kind of dame
Whose love is less for ball than me;
And so, my Myrt, that is the reason
I think I'll go alone this season.

except for the Royals

And everyone in the NL East except Atlanta.

Josh Illes, of Birmingham, Ala., has a slightly lighter take: "Opening Day is the only day of the year that I don't feel bad when I totally ignore my children."
Meanwhile, Troy Smithson has a darker view of things: "Opening Day is the only one I don't feel bad about ignoring my children, job and wife to start drinking in public at one in the afternoon. And if my team wins, I don't even feel like I have to go home and beat them in a drunken rage!"

Should the Game Chatters not show up, I suggest everybody come here. Hopefully NTNGod will save the day again, since we still have no idea where the Primer Chimp is (I sure hope he isn't being subjected to medical testing).

Cosign x 1000. I only wish I could listen to it like it's a little transistor radio -- I mean, you can hear the broadcast w/out headphones, but it's pretty faint.

Nice article from Doug Glanville, taking a journey through his opening day memories:

Opening at Wrigley in April was always interesting. One year, the Cubs were brave enough to play in sub-freezing temperatures on a day that our south side Chicago rival White Sox canceled their night game, when it was a few degrees warmer (despite the wind chill) than our game-time temperature. My teammate Rey Sanchez wore his signature face mask that made him look like he was about to join a secret society of blue ninjas. Then there was Chipper Jones of the Braves, who despised the cold. He wore so many layers he looked like he would explode if his shoelace came undone. I kept thinking about bunting towards him just to see if he would even bother moving.

The crack of the bat!
The roar of the crowd!
That's right - baseball's back!
Hello New York, I'm Bill McNeal
Join us Opening Day live from New Yankee Stadium for all the action
The boys of summer and WNYX - a winning team!

Jerry Hairston & Darnell McDonald? Really?

Also, BOO MLB AtBat on only offering the WLW broadcast for NYM/CIN -- the Brennemanns AND Jeff Brantley?

Ah yes, the roar of the crowd, the crack of the bat, the crunch of the snow under your foot as you wait outside for the inept ticket takers to allow you to enter the Dome.

Actually, other than Halladay, I'm almost looking forward to the games on Thursday and tomorrow more. Thursday because of Romero's debut, and tomorrow so I can witness the mass cry of anguish as unsuspecting Rogers Centre patrons hear that it's day one of the three day liquor license suspension, and no beer will be served at the game.

I take it you weren't a big Kansas State football fan in the 90's.

If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, career AAAA player, spent most of his minor-league career in the Yankee organization.
   27. Dewey, Steven Wright Wannabe and Soupuss Posted: April 06, 2009 at 06:03 PM (#3126339)
Although why Darnell McDonald is batting second in a major-league lineup is beyond me.
   28. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: April 06, 2009 at 06:32 PM (#3126442)
He never played in the Yankee organization. Spent most of his career in the Oriole organization.

No, that's Donzell McDonald. Darnell's evil twin.

Rough inning for Cliff Lee there.

No, that's Donzell McDonald. Darnell's evil twin.

Their mother probably thinks Darnell is the evil one, since he wasn't born until two and half years after Donzell. 30 months is a long time to be in labor.

I'm not sure how she feels about the younger boys, Durnswell and Damnwell.
   35. Dewey, Steven Wright Wannabe and Soupuss Posted: April 06, 2009 at 07:57 PM (#3126804)
So far 2009 Cliff Lee isn't as good as 2008 Cliff Lee.

Alternatively, the 2009 Rangers look a lot like the 2008 Rangers at the plate.

Who is that freak on the mound though?
