If you pitch a perfect game against a MLB team with a payroll on par with the Long Island Ducks, does it still go into the record books?
Great -- let's take Philip Humber's perfect game out of the book too while we're at it, since that was against the Mariners.
   202. Gamingboy Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:09 PM (#4402686)
Is there any doubt whatsoever that Verlander will no-hit the Astros?
   203. Baldrick Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:10 PM (#4402687)
And Matt Cain's, since it was against...these same Astros.
   204. Baldrick Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:11 PM (#4402689)
Has there been anything even all that close to a hit yet? I haven't been watching super closely, but it seems like they're just flailing at everything.

I haven't seen most of it, but the MLB Tonight guys said there have been a few bullets at fielders.
   206. Sonic Youk Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:15 PM (#4402692)
12 Ks now

I've been watching a stream out of the corner of my eye since about the third, and havent seen anything close to a hit yet, fwiw

   207. Baldrick Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:16 PM (#4402693)
There were two lineouts to first base, one of which was certainly not a bullet. Don't really remember the other.

I count four 3-ball counts.

I didn't start watching until the 5th inning, but Moreland made a great play on a line drive to his right, and there was an excellent play by the CF a few innings back.

No but AJ managed to scare me on that throw to 1B on the strikeout in the dirt.
   210. Tom Nawrocki Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:22 PM (#4402700)
Nice throw, Cuddyer. He's not as terrible as Ty Wigginton, but Cuddy is my least favorite Rockie, and every time I hear what a great clubhouse guy he is, I hate him a little bit more.

93 pitches through 7. I would say he's finishing this thing unless he has to labor through the 8th for some reason.

If he has a perfect game, he's going all the way. If he's "only" got a no-hitter, I can maybe see Joe Nathan getting called for the ninth.

Pretty much. There was a deep fly ball to left center and line drive to the first baseman, I think that's it.
   214. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:36 PM (#4402715)
13 Ks on Sunday. 13 so far tonight. I don't know what the record is for most Ks by a team in one season, but the Astros are gonna break it this year.
   215. Sonic Youk Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:37 PM (#4402717)
pitch 102 is a nasty slider for a K

edit: and another for 106
   216. Baldrick Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:37 PM (#4402718)
The Astros are quite bad.
   217. Srul Itza Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:39 PM (#4402719)
I heard Yu was pitching a good game. Am I too late to jinx it?
   218. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:39 PM (#4402721)
That's 8 innings down.
   219. Dale Sams Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:40 PM (#4402722)
cmon Ron, blisters heal.
   220. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:42 PM (#4402725)
I don't care who it's against it's a perfect game (so far). This is sensational.
   221. Srul Itza Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:44 PM (#4402727)
What's the earliest in the season for a perfect game?

March 14

Or Humber last year...
   223. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:47 PM (#4402735)
Philip Humber's from last year (April 21st).
   224. Sonic Youk Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:48 PM (#4402737)
7-8-9 in the 9th

REALLY?

7-8-9 in the 9th

What a coincidence.
   227. Sonic Youk Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:50 PM (#4402741)
HAHAHA

oh god thats dumb of me. but someone on the Houston broadcast mentioned it and I typed it.
   228. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:51 PM (#4402742)
Including the career .660 OPS DH for the Astros...
   229. Gamingboy Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:53 PM (#4402744)
Hey, Carmelo has had 50 points tonight against the Heat. I can already see the obnoxious discussion tomorrow on First Take. Or rather, I can't see it, because I will be trying to stay as far away as possible.
   230. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:53 PM (#4402745)
So this would be Pierzynski's 2nd year in a row catching a perfect game?
   231. Srul Itza Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:56 PM (#4402750)
Going down easy

AAAAGGGGHHHH.

And so it goes.
   236. JE (Jason) Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:57 PM (#4402755)
No Yu!
   237. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:57 PM (#4402756)
Broken up with a line drive through Darvish's legs!
   238. Famous Original Joe C Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:57 PM (#4402759)
[229] no Wade or Lebron tonight, though.
   239. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:57 PM (#4402760)
Not impressed.
   240. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:57 PM (#4402761)
MARWIN GONZALEZ?!?!
   241. Cowboy Popup Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:58 PM (#4402763)
NO!
   242. Gamingboy Posted: April 02, 2013 at 10:58 PM (#4402764)
And so, the Astros get a small victory.
   243. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: April 02, 2013 at 11:00 PM (#4402766)
Bonus points to the Astro fan giving the double middle finger to Yu after the hit.

Damn.
   246. Honkie Kong Posted: April 02, 2013 at 11:03 PM (#4402773)
I absolutely hated Ron Washington for replacing Darvish after that hit.
Given the way he was going, it was a CG shutout in the bag. Gah!
   247. JE (Jason) Posted: April 02, 2013 at 11:03 PM (#4402774)
Is it inappropriate to point out that Gonzalez stroked the ball between Darvish's legs?
   248. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 02, 2013 at 11:04 PM (#4402777)
C'mon. 8-run outburst!

Edit: Oh well.
   249. Honkie Kong Posted: April 02, 2013 at 11:05 PM (#4402778)
Whats the latest in a season for a team to score its first run?
Giants still not on the scoreboard

The record is starting the season with two shutouts against.

Little did he know that the double bird is actually a sign of great respect in the Iranian areas of Japan.

weird that bumgarner and ryu have about the same pitch counts despite how many more hits ryu's had to scatter
   254. Srul Itza Posted: April 02, 2013 at 11:25 PM (#4402802)
Through 5 innings, Ryu has given up 9 hits, struck out 3 -- and has only given up 1 run, while tossing 55 pitches. Three double plays, one batter out trying to stretch.

EDIT -- Coke to DER K.

I call this kind of pitching performance "Dancing through the rain drops".

hilariously, in Korean it's actually the word for "Willow (tree)" something that's usually associated in the Oriental sphere with slim people.

...while TWIRLING 55 pitches. Get it right.

So Weiss used Betancourt to protect a four run lead in the bottom of the ninth with two on and two out; after not using him in much more "high leverage" situations Monday. Just shows what meaningless BS the save stat is.
